Understanding the Bible Lesson Eight First Temple Era I. Samson And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and the LORD blessed him. Judges 13:1, 24 A. Samson ties 300 foxes tails together B. Kills 1,000 Philistines C. Delilah: Philistines put his eyes out II. Samson s strength returns And Samson called unto the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes. Judges 16:28 A. Kills 3,000 in his death III. Samuel Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, because I have asked him of the LORD. And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. I Samuel 8:7 A. Hearken unto their voice, but under protest. VII. Saul anointed king And when they sought him, he could not be found. Therefore they inquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff. I Samuel 10:21-22 A. Saul started out humble VIII. Saul rejected from being king And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel? Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king. I Samuel 15:17, 23 A. If we reject God s word, He will reject us IX. David anointed king And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. I Samuel 16:12-13 A. David s father didn t even bring David before Samuel B. Man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart

X. He kills Goliath Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD S, and he will give you into our hands. I Samuel 17:45, 47 A. David gives all the glory to God XI. Jonathan loves David And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father s house. I Samuel 18:1-2 A. Jonathan is one of the greatest men in the entire Bible XII. Saul tries to kill David And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of music. And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands. I Samuel 18:6-7 A. Saul what can he have more but the kingdom? XIII. Saul commits suicide And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was sore wounded of the archers Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it. I Samuel 31:3-4 A. Saul s visit to the witch of Endor

XIV. David becomes king of Judah And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said, whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. II Samuel 2:1, 4 A. David seeks God for guidance B. After death of Abner, became king over Israel and Judah XV. David s sin with Bathsheba A. He commits adultery B. Then he commits murder C. David fasts for the child D. His repentance Psalm 51 1. Difference between Saul and David 2. After all of this, David is called a man after God s own heart. XVI. Temple Mount The house of God A. God instructs David to buy the threshingfloor of Araunah Then David said, This is the house of the LORD God, and this is the altar of the burnt offering for Israel. And David commanded to gather together the strangers that were in the land of Israel; and he set masons to hew wrought stones to build the house of God. II Chronicles 22:1-2 1. Mt. Moriah This will be the place of sacrifice

XVII. David desires to build God a house Then David the king stood up upon his feet, and said, Hear me, my brethren, and my people: As for me, I had in mine heart to build an house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and for the footstool of our God, and had made ready for the building: But God said unto me, Thou shalt not build an house for my name, because thou hast been a man of war, and hast shed blood. II Chronicles 28:2-3 A. God says no B. You have been a man of war and have shed blood XVIII. Solomon becomes king The king also said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon: And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon. I Kings 1:33-34 A. David exhorts him to build the house of the Lord and to walk in the Lord s commandments XIX. Temple built on Mt. Moriah Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem in Mount Moriah, where the LORD appeared unto David his father, in the place that David had prepared in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite. II Chronicles 3:1 A. The threshingfloor of Ornan

XX. First Temple era begins 968 BC Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the house. And the priests could not enter into the house of the LORD, because the glory of the LORD had filled the LORD S house. II Chronicles 7:1-2 A. Solomon s prayer of dedication B.
