the newsletter of Community United Methodist Church Glorify God All Things Considered September 2017 Grace and peace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ; grace that provides divine assistance for daily living and peace to comfort us through all circumstances of life through the power of the Holy Spirit! I seldom think about formulated prayers, but over the years I have come to appreciate the Prayer of St. Francis, and it can be found in the United Methodist Hymnal, #481. What I like about this prayer, is that it is an invitation to the Lord, asking God to use the intercessor as an instrument of His peace. The prayer asks - where there is hatred, God manifest love; where there is injury, God manifest forgiveness; and where there is doubt, God manifest faith; where there is despair, God manifest hope. Where there is darkness, God manifest light; and where there is sadness, God manifest joy. The best part of this prayer, is that the intercessor is asking God to manifest these things in his or her life and not in someone else s! Encourage One Another Share Jesus Yes! God wants to use each of us to be an instrument of His peace! Our Heavenly Father wants to use each of us personally - to reach out to those around us who are struggling and hurting, to bring healing and wholeness into the lives of others. You see, our mission as a church is to reach out and minister to those around us and make Disciples of Christ! This also means that each of us is called by God to personally grow as learners of Christ and to intentionally reach out in ministry to the world locally, regionally, nationally and globally. The bible calls this our mission which is also referred to as the Great Commission as found in Matthew 28! However, did you know that our ministry is different from our mission? While our mission is to reach out and make Disciples, our ministry is how we accomplish our mission of making Disciples! But one thing about ministry, it must be intentional and specific and unified. If everyone in the church is doing their own thing and the church does nothing as a unified body of Christ, it will not be effective in transforming the world and building the Kingdom of God. Furthermore, there are many good things we can do, but if we are over occupied with good things, we will never get to the greatest things nor do anything with excellence. So to help our Church become more effective in mission and ministry, the Church Council of Community United Methodist Church is working on defining our core Ministries. The Council is also seeking God s calling on our church and working to define it so we may grow in excellence and effectiveness in both our mission and ministry. In fact, the Lord is calling each of us to identify what and how we have been called to be instruments of God s peace and better understand how that works in our church, the Body of Christ. Another benefit of clarifying our church s ministries, it also helps define and shape and clarify our future. We have had an exciting year of growing in intentional ministry and this is not an all-inclusive list: Continued on page 2

Why? Because as the Prayer of Saint Francis explains, it is in consoling and understanding, loving and giving; that we receive and are blessed; and it is through dying to ourselves that we are born to Eternal Life. May the Lord richly bless you, Pastor Bill 2
