Knowing God: The Glory of Jesus as the Son of Man (Rev. 1-3)

Transcription:

Kings and Priests 4 Rev 1:5,6 Revelation 1:5,6 NKJV and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, 6 and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. David: An Anointed King with the Heart of a Priest What are we looking back into Old Testament stories for modern day revelation? 1 Corinthians 10:11 ESV Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. Why is David so important to us? First of all, Jesus is called the Son of David. David s reign was a prophetic picture of what we would possess in the Spirit through the rule and reign of Christ. David saw the cross one thousand years before Jesus was crucified. Psalm 22 it begins with My God my God why have you forsaken me. He saw his hands and feet being pierced. He saw in the spirit the executioners casting lots over his garments. He also saw Jesus and His Eternal Kingly Priesthood after the order of Melchizedek (Ps. 110) As a result, David lived in new covenant revelation and illegally broke the rules of the law of Moses. Confronting he Pharisees about their legalistic attitudes on the Sabbath, Jesus says what about David: Mt. 12:4 NIV 4 He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. David was an anointed King with a Heart of a Priest. David came to faith about what he saw in the spirit. Can you come to faith concerning your new identity in Christ? 1) Time and Eternity a) Eternity is not a long long time. In the eternal realm, everything just IS. b) Eternity as an Ever- present now. Jesus, the Eternal Son is the alpha and omega, the beginning and the end. He exists beyond time. c) The Eternal Son called THE I AM GOD - This is what Jesus meant when he said, before Abraham was, I AM i) John 8 NKJV Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad. 57 the Jews said You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham? 58 Jesus said to them, Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.

ii) This title is so powerful that when the officials came to arrests Jesus he identified himself with the I AM title and they fell down! Take a look: John 18:3-6 NKJV Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. 4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, Whom are you seeking? They answered Him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus said to them, I am He. And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. 6 Now when He said to them, I am He, they drew back and fell to the ground. (NTS stumble back and fake a fall) At that moment, the manifest presence of the eternal God appeared and they fell down! iii) Everything that Jesus is and everything that Jesus has accomplished for us exists in the ever present now realm of the spirit or the realm of eternity in the ever present now of the I AM God. Notice that the I AM God who lives in the ever-present now, knows all things! All that Jesus was and everything that he does, has already been accomplished in the realm of eternity. 2) Faith is a faculty given to us by God in which we are able to step into the eternal realm, grab hold of the riches of eternity and bring them back to world in which we live. (Alan Vincent) David and His God Hungry Heart! Concerning David, God once said I have found David... a man after My own heart who will do all My will (Acts 13:22 ESV). David s tabernacle was an expression of David s God Hungry Heart and it became a prophetic expression of a new covenant priesthood composed of redeemed people from all tribes and nations... not just Jews and but Gentiles also. David s tabernacle was celebrated by the early church When the Gospel of the Kingdom began to overflow the boundaries of the Jewish communities and sweep into the Samaria and then to the Gentile world 20 years after Pentecost it caused a major crisis that threatened to divide and potentially destroy the early church. The Problem: Should these Non-Jewish believers be required to keep the Law and also be circumcised? Do they have to become Jews and embrace Jewish tradition and culture based upon Moses Law to be saved? Or is it enough just to believe in Jesus? v After hearing each point of view from the pressure groups and then the apostles Peter, Paul and Barnabas, James gets a revelation from the Holy Spirit! v He declares that this is a fulfillment of the prophecy of Amos 9:11-12. That God was raising up again the Tabernacle of David. Acts 15:13-17 And after they had become silent, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, listen to me: 14 Simon has declared how God at the first visited the Gentiles to take out of them a people for His name. 15 And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written: 16 After this I will return And will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down; I will rebuild its ruins, And I will set it up; 17 So that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord, Even all the Gentiles who are called by My name

Since David didn t have to go through religious rituals to experience the presence of God, neither should these Gentiles. David s tabernacle became a new expression of unveiled worship and the place where the presence of God was manifesting with power! David s God Hungry Heart 1) He Recovered the Ark of God s Presence. a) The Ark of the Covenant was a chest that symbolized the glory and power of God s manifest presence. i) The chest measured approximately 45 by 27 by 27 inches, and was overlaid inside and out with gold. ii) Contents: (1) it contained the two tablets of the Law of Moses (2) a pot of the miraculous manna from heaven (3) a part of Aaron s rod that miraculously budded iii) The lid of the ark was called the mercy seat. iv) It was the most important piece of furniture in tabernacle of Moses. Behind the Veil. b) The Manifest Presence of God. i) The manifest presence of God was always expected to fill their place of worship. It would often appear with a cloud sometimes the cloud of God s presence was so thick that people couldn t stand before the Lord. Sometimes Moses couldn t even enter the tent! ii) The manifest presence of God was highly valued in battle. (1) Crossing the Jordan: When Joshua let the Jews in to the promised land the ark went before them. He told them when soles of the priest barring the ark the Jordan river will back up and we shall cross over on dry ground. (2) Led into Battle: During the conquest of the land of Canaan, the ark was carried at the fall of Jericho (Josh. 6:4 11 Later the tabernacle of Moses was set up in Shiloh and there the ark of God s presence rested behind a thick veil in the Holy of Holies for 300 years. c) The Ark was Lost (1 Sam 4) and with it the manifest presence of God disappeared. i) In 1 Samuel, we find Israel suffering defeat at the hands of their enemies. ii) In chapter 4 Israel is getting routed by the Philistines: (1) God s people superstitiously went and got the Ark to carry it into battle. (2) It all ended in disaster 30,000 Israelites died and the Ark of the Covenant was taken.

Hophni and Phineas the corrupt priest were killed - Eli (their dad and High Priest) fell over backwards at the news and died - the wife of Phineas gave premature birth to a son and died calling it Ichabod, meaning the Glory of the Lord has departed. Ichabod the manifest presence of God is gone (3) The Philistines took the Ark to their own temple and put before the idol they worship, Dagon. (a) It caused the philistines so much trouble they brought it back to Israel. (b) It got passed around but the people of Israel but it caused them trouble (c) The Ark was finally sent to the house of Abinidab - the one who was willing. It stayed there 20 years and God blessed Abinidab s house. (d) Then Saul came to the throne as king and neither he nor his people sought God or His Ark all the days of his forty year reign. So, for at least 60 years, probably more, God's people lived without His manifest presence - no one really knew what it was like anymore to have God actually manifest Himself. iii) All this time, the regular services and ceremonies continued in the Tabernacle which still stood in Shiloh, but God was no longer there. d) The empty religious activities didn't satisfy his God hungry heart. i) Having tasted God and the reality of His presence, there was born in him a burning desire to bring back the reality and manifest presence of God to center of the political and public life of his nation and to pour life into the empty religious institutions of his people. ii) David knew a man of God could not thrive without the presence of God manifesting in his life. His worship would be empty and his victories will be short-lived. e) When he became King, David set out bring the Ark of God s manifested presence back to the Kingdom. But he did not attempt to bring the Ark back to Moses Tabernacle although that was still standing in Shiloh. Instead, David would pitch a new tent for it on mount Zion in Jerusalem! 2) He Removed the Enemies the Mocked God s Presence. a) These people were the enemies of God s presence who lived in Jerusalem and they mocked David saying, David will never come into this city even lame and blind people could defeat him. (2 Sam 5) They lived in a fortress and felt like no one could ever conquer them. It was a stronghold. David s army did defeat them. The accessed the city through the water tunnels. b) What are the unholy things in your life that the enemy uses to mock and hinder the presence of God? i) Jebusites in our life are some strongholds in our life. It s like a Jebusite in your mind saying, Ha, Jesus will never come in here!

ii) These are the dominating sins of our generation: (1) Addictions of every kind: (2) Anger and Resentment issues which lead to crippling un-forgiveness. (3) Strongholds of fear and unnatural anxieties These things are not compatible with the manifest presence of God. c) The shout of victory from a calloused and unholy heart only stirs up the enemy! 1 Sam 4:4-11 (the Philistines) i) When Israel saw the Ark, they shouted so loud it shook the ground. But that shout only stirred up the Philistines. ii) Israel was routed because God cannot protect a rebellious people with a cold heart, no matter how He loves them or how loud they shout. But David defeated the Jebusites and so must we. 3) He Rejoiced in Unveiled Intimacy with God. a) For centuries, the Ark of God s Presence was hidden behind a veil. In fact, the bible says even to this day when Moses writing are read to many Jesus that their hearts and mind remain veiled. b) Hebrews 10:19 23 NIV Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. c) His Body is the Veil - When Jesus did on the cross he shouted it is finished! i) Telo Finished! (1) Gladiator thrust a final blow! (2) A debtor makes his final payment Paid in Full! ii) At that moment the veil was torn in two. d) Now, We like David can pull back the flap and enter into face to face intimacy to worship in his glory! Final Exhortation: 1) Desire the manifest presence of God. 2) Deal with the unholy Jebusites in your life. 3) Develop an unveiled intimacy with Jesus through worship.
