Lesson 43: We have a Living Prophet, Primary 1: I Am a Child of God (2000) 142-44

Purpose To help each child understand that we are blessed when we follow the prophet.

OUR OPENING PRAYER WILL BE GIVEN BY (Enter name here)

Attention Activity What is happening in this picture? Jesus told Noah to build an ark so his family would be saved from a flood.

Attention Activity What is happening in this picture? Jesus told Moses to free the Israelites from slavery.

Attention Activity What is happening in this picture? Jesus told Joseph Smith that he should not join any of the churches then on the earth.

Noah, Moses, and Joseph Smith were all prophets. A prophet is a man who talks with Heavenly Father and Jesus. Since Heavenly Father and Jesus are not on the earth to teach us, they have prophets to help them.

Heavenly Father and Jesus teach the prophet, and the prophet teaches us what we should do so that we can be blessed and happy.

Listen to the following story about the Boy Samuel, who was called by the lord.

Go to the video Go to the Slides Go to the Narrated Slides Continue

Who called Samuel s name while he was in bed? (Jesus. See 1 Samuel 3:4.) Who did Samuel think was calling him? (See 1 Samuel 3:5.)

What did Eli tell Samuel to do? (See 1 Samuel 3:9.) What did Samuel say to Jesus? (See 1 Samuel 3:10.)

Samuel was a young boy when Jesus spoke to him the first time. When he grew older, he taught his people what Heavenly Father and Jesus wanted them to do.

Let s have (3) people act out the parts of Samuel, Eli, and Jesus.

We have a living Prophet on earth today. What is his name? President Thomas S. Monson

Why do we need a living prophet? So we can know what Heavenly Father and Jesus want us to do.

The prophet teaches us by speaking at conferences. Conferences are big meetings attended by a lot of people. We might be able to listen to the prophet on television, radio, or recordings.

The prophet teaches us by speaking at conferences. Conferences are big meetings attended by a lot of people. We might be able to listen to the prophet on television, radio, or recordings. His words are also written in Church magazines that our parents or others can read to us.

Each student needs to select a piece of paper form this container. As you pick the paper, we will read the message. These messages are all things that the living prophet has asked us to do.

Let s play a game. I m going to toss you this, and as I do I m going to say I will follow our prophet by. Then whoever caught it, does the same thing and tosses it to the next person as they say I will follow our prophet by.

Because people follow the prophet, there lives were blessed.

Because Noah s family followed him, they were saved from a flood.

Because the Israelites followed Moses, they were led out of Egypt into a better land.

Because people followed Joseph Smith, they became members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

These people were blessed because they followed the prophet We will also be blessed when we follow the prophet.

Let s sing Follow the Prophet

Follow the Prophet 1. Adam was a prophet, first one that we know. In a place called Eden, he helped things to grow. Adam served the Lord by following his ways. We are his descendants in the latter days. Chorus Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, Follow the prophet; don't go astray. Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, Follow the prophet; he knows the way.

Follow the Prophet 2. Enoch was a prophet; he taught what was good. People in his city did just what they should. When they were so righteous that there was no sin, Heav'nly Father took them up to live with him. Chorus Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, Follow the prophet; don't go astray. Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, Follow the prophet; he knows the way.

Follow the Prophet 3. Noah was a prophet called to preach the word, Tried to cry repentance, but nobody heard. They were busy sinning-noah preached in vain. They wished they had listened when they saw the rain. Chorus Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, Follow the prophet; don't go astray. Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, Follow the prophet; he knows the way.

Follow the Prophet 4. Abraham the prophet prayed to have a son, So the Lord sent Isaac as the chosen one. Isaac begat Jacob, known as Israel; Jacob's sons were twelve tribes, so the Bible tells. Chorus Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, Follow the prophet; don't go astray. Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, Follow the prophet; he knows the way.

Follow the Prophet 5. Moses was a prophet sent to Israel. He would lead them to the promised land to dwell. They were slow to follow, or so it appears. They were in the wilderness for forty years. Chorus Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, Follow the prophet; don't go astray. Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, Follow the prophet; he knows the way.

Follow the Prophet 6. Samuel was a prophet chosen as a boy. Hannah promised God her son would serve with joy. In the tabernacle, Samuel heard his name; He was called by God and answered, "Here I am!" Chorus Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, Follow the prophet; don't go astray. Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, Follow the prophet; he knows the way.

Follow the Prophet 7. Jonah was a prophet, tried to run away, But he later learned to listen and obey. When we really try, the Lord won't let us fail: That's what Jonah learned deep down inside the whale. Chorus Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, Follow the prophet; don't go astray. Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, Follow the prophet; he knows the way.

Follow the Prophet 8. Daniel was a prophet. He refused to sin; So the king threw Daniel in the lion's den. Angels calmed the lions, and the king soon saw Daniel's pow'r was great, for he obeyed God's law. Chorus Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, Follow the prophet; don't go astray. Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, Follow the prophet; he knows the way.

Follow the Prophet 9. Now we have a world where people are confused. If you don't believe it, go and watch the news. We can get direction all along our way, If we heed the prophets-follow what they say. Chorus Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, Follow the prophet; don't go astray. Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, Follow the prophet; he knows the way. Words and music: Duane E. Hiatt, b. 1937. (c) 1989 IRI

TESTIMONY I want to testify to you that we have a living prophet on the earth today. When we do our best to follow the prophet, we will be blessed and happy.
