Entering The Kingdom of Heaven Matt. 7:13-29 2 Kingdom Righteousness Contrasted With The Righteousness of The Scribes And Pharisees 1. Murder contrasted with hateful anger Matt. 5:21-26 2. Adultery contrasted with adulterous lust Matt. 5:27-30 3. Treacherous divorce contrasted with divorce for fornication Matt. 5:31-32 4. Dishonest oaths contrasted with honest speech Matt. 5:33-37 5. Personal revenge contrasted with overcoming evil with good Matt. 5:38-42 6. Hating your enemies contrasted with loving Kingdom Righteousness Contrasted With The Righteousness of The Scribes And Pharisees Jesus exposes the misguided, shallow, rebellious righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees and how it conflicted with kingdom righteousness He was not contrasting the Old and New Covenants but revealing that hateful anger, adulterous lust, divorce for reasons other than fornication, dishonest promises, taking personal revenge and hating your enemies are sinful under both covenants your enemies Matt. 5:43-48 3 4 Shallow View of Adultery Contrasted With Adulterous Lust Mat 5:27 "You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY'; Mat 5:28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 5 Shallow View of Adultery Contrasted With Adulterous Lust Mat 5:29 "If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. Mat 5:30 "If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell. 6

Shallow View of Adultery Contrasted With Adulterous Lust Although Jesus refers to one of the Ten Commandments condemning adultery, He focuses on the underlying adulterous lust Adulterous lust was not seen as being as bad as the outward act of adultery To enter His kingdom, we must put to death both adultery and adulterous lust Our thinking, desires and outward actions must be changed by the Word of God 7 Adultery Condemned Under The Law Exo 20:14 "You shall not commit adultery. Lev 20:10 'If there is a man who commits adultery with another man's wife, one who commits adultery with his friend's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. 8 Deu 6:4 "Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! Deu 6:5 "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. Deu 6:6 "These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. Deu 6:7 "You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. 9 10 Psa 119:11 Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You. Pro 4:23 Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life. Pro 4:24 Put away from you a deceitful mouth And put devious speech far from you. Pro 4:25 Let your eyes look directly ahead And let your gaze be fixed straight in front of you. Pro 4:26 Watch the path of your feet And all your ways will be established. Pro 4:27 Do not turn to the right nor to the left; Turn your foot from evil. 11 12

Sinful Thinking Condemned Pro 23:6 Do not eat the bread of a selfish man, Or desire his delicacies; Pro 23:7 For as he thinks within himself, so he is. He says to you, "Eat and drink!" But his heart is not with you. Exo 20:17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor." 13 14 Deu 22:23 "If there is a girl who is a virgin engaged to a man, and another man finds her in the city and lies with her, Deu 22:24 then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city and you shall stone them to death; the girl, because she did not cry out in the city, and the man, because he has violated his neighbor's wife. Thus you shall purge the evil from among Deu 22:25 "But if in the field the man finds the girl who is engaged, and the man forces her and lies with her, then only the man who lies with her shall die. Deu 22:26 "But you shall do nothing to the girl; there is no sin in the girl worthy of death, for just as a man rises against his neighbor and murders him, so is this case. you. 15 16 Deu 22:27 "When he found her in the field, the engaged girl cried out, but there was no one to save her. Pro 6:25 Do not desire her beauty in your heart, Nor let her capture you with her eyelids. Pro 6:26 For on account of a harlot one is reduced to a loaf of bread, And an adulteress hunts for the precious life. 17 18

Pro 6:27 Can a man take fire in his bosom And his clothes not be burned? Pro 6:28 Or can a man walk on hot coals And his feet not be scorched? Pro 6:29 So is the one who goes in to his neighbor's wife; Whoever touches her will not go unpunished. 19 Jer 5:8 "They were well-fed lusty horses, Each one neighing after his neighbor's wife. Job 31:1 "I have made a covenant with my eyes; How then could I gaze at a virgin? Job 31:9 "If my heart has been enticed by a woman, Or I have lurked at my neighbor's doorway, Job 31:10 May my wife grind for another, And let others kneel down over her. 20 Job 31:11 "For that would be a lustful crime; Moreover, it would be an iniquity punishable by judges. Job 31:12 "For it would be fire that consumes to Abaddon, And would uproot all my increase. Marital Relations Approved of Moses Pro 5:18 Let your fountain be blessed, And rejoice in the wife of your youth. Pro 5:19 As a loving hind and a graceful doe, Let her breasts satisfy you at all times; Be exhilarated always with her love. Pro 5:20 For why should you, my son, be exhilarated with an adulteress And embrace the bosom of a foreigner? 21 22 Adultery and Adulterous Lust Condemned Under The Gospel 1Co 6:9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 1Co 6:10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. Adultery and Adulterous Lust Condemned Under The Gospel 1Co 6:11 Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. 2Pe 2:14 having eyes full of adultery that never cease from sin, enticing unstable souls, having a heart trained in greed, accursed children; 23 24

Rom 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. Rom 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. acceptable and perfect. 25 26 Gal 2:20 "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. 2Ti 2:22 Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. 27 Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, Eph 5:26 so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 28 Eph 5:27 that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. Eph 5:28 So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; Eph 5:29 for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, Eph 5:30 because we are members of His body. 29 30
