Service of Worship All Saints Sunday November 4, 2012 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God The Mystical Supper, icon by Simon Ushakov, 1685. Today we celebrate All Saints Day, which is a time for the Church to remember all those saints, known and unknown, who have gone before us and have faithfully walked the Christian path. The mood of this service is one of celebration and joy for all those people who have borne fruit for the kingdom by their service to Christ. The decades-long Duke Chapel tradition of celebrating All Saints by collaborating with area jazz musicians evokes the breadth of God s kingdom and the diversity of the communion of saints whose lives we celebrate today. Today we welcome new members into the communion of saints through the sacrament of baptism. Much of the bread used for communion today was made by the children of the Congregation, who will bring it forward during the offertory procession.

The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. Gathering Carillon Jazz Prelude Introit Swing Low, Sweet Chariot Swing low, sweet chariot, coming for to carry me home. I looked over Jordan, and what did I see? A band of angels coming after me. Greeting and Announcements Traditional Spiritual William Dawson (1899-1990) *Processional Hymn 702 Sing with All the Saints in Glory hymn to joy Sacrament of Baptism Presentation of Candidates The parents of Henry Theodore Watts Hockett and Harrington Emery George bring their children forward for baptism. The congregation responds by reading the passages in bold. Prayer (in unison) Lord of all time and eternity, you bring us into the company of your angels and saints through the waters of baptism. Come among us now to make the covenant to which you call us, and strengthen us to live your redeemed life. Amen. Making and Renewing Our Decision to Follow Christ Do you turn to Christ as Savior, Lord, and Friend? I turn to Christ. Do you repent of all your sins? I repent of all my sins. Do you renounce evil? I renounce evil. Renewing the Outward Sign of Inward Faith The minister blesses the waters of baptism. Do you believe and trust in God the Father, source of all being and life, the one for whom we exist? I believe and trust in God the Father.

Do you believe and trust in God the Son, who took our human nature, died for us, and rose again? I believe and trust in God the Son. Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the people of God, and makes Christ known in the world? I believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit. This is the faith of the Church. This is our faith. We believe and trust in one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Baptism Commissioning *Peace (All exchange signs and words of God s peace.) Proclamation Prayer for Illumination (in unison) God of holiness, your glory is proclaimed in every age: as we hear your word today and as we rejoice in the faith of your saints, inspire us to follow their example with boldness and joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Adam: The Chapel challenges its PathWays Chapel Scholars to walk together on a journey of discernment, listening to God in the classroom, among peers and pastors, in conversation and at work, in Durham and beyond. Are you ready to meet God and discover more of who God has made you to be?

New Scholars: We are. Adam: Bless, O Lord, these your servants and show them how to find freedom in your service. New Scholars: Amen. Adam: Lord Jesus, you are the way, the truth, and the life. Walk with us along the journey, that we may find your truth and enter your new life. Congregation: Give us grace to grow in grace, love, and friendship, with you and with each other. Amen. Call to Prayer Minister: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Minister: Let us pray. Prayers of the People (The congregation responds to each petition: Hear our prayer. ) Offertory Sanctus (from Gospel Mass) Holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. Hosanna in the highest be to thee who gave me victory. There was a man sitting by the roadside; He was blind, he could not see. Then the master of the earth and skies Touched his eyes and he looked around saying: Holy, holy, Lord God of hosts Another man lay by a pool-side; Thirty-eight years with his infirmity. Then the Lord troubled the water; The man arose and he jumped for joy saying: Holy, holy, Lord God of hosts Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, We will always sing thy praise. Hosanna in the highest! Like the blind man and the lame man, I was lost, living in sin. Then I opened up my heart one day, I let the Savior in. Now I shout saying: Holy, holy, Lord God of hosts Holy, holy, Lord Jesus. Holy! Robert Ray (b. 1946)

We celebrate its commitment to excellence in nursing sciences, clinical care, and research, and its desire to touch lives and offer transforming care to those suffering from illness and disease. A representative brings a world map to the altar, to represent the School of Nursing s influence that has stretched to many countries and in service to many families throughout the globe. In Durham, we give thanks for the saints who have shaped Durham by living lives that reveal God s kingdom locally. The ushers bring forward a history book of Durham. *The Great Thanksgiving (Musical Setting A, found on page 17 in the hymnal) *The Lord s Prayer (number 895 in the hymnal, in unison) Sharing of the Bread and Wine All those who have become members of Christ s body through baptism and seek to be united with God and at peace with their neighbor are invited to receive communion.
