The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone. Before Worship As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: Prayer of the Day Almighty and merciful God, You never despise what You have made and always forgive those who turn to You. Create in us such new and contrite hearts that we may truly repent of our sins and obtain Your full and gracious pardon; through Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. For the Children A Cry-Room is available if your little ones need a moment. It is the first room on the left as you walk into the church building. A speaker and window let you hear and see the service. Facilities Restrooms are located down the hall and on the right side. 2
The Divine Service: Vespers, p. 120 The Confession of Sin P: Dearly beloved! We have come together in the presence of God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at His hand, to set forth His most worthy praise, to hear His holy Word, and to ask for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and salvation. O come, let us worship Him! Let us kneel and bow down before Him. Let us confess our sins with penitent hearts, and obtain forgiveness by His infinite grace and mercy. C: Almighty and most merciful Father, we have strayed from Your ways like lost sheep. We have followed the devices and desires of our hearts. We have offended against Your holy law. We have done those things which we should not have done, and we have not done those things which we should have done. Have mercy on us, O Lord! Spare us and restore us, according to the promises You have declared to us in Jesus Christ, our Lord. For His sake grant that we may live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of Your holy name. P: The almighty and merciful Lord has granted us pardon and forgiveness of all our sins, grace for true repentance and amendment of life, and the comfort of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Hymn #563:1-3, Abide With Us the Day is Waning The Versicles P: O Lord, open my lips. 3
P: Make haste, O God, to deliver me. 4
The Psalmody Psalm 51 Soloist sings refrain (above) Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, in your compassion, blot out my offense. Oh wash me more and more from my guilt and my sorrow, and cleanse me from all of my sin. My offenses, truly I know them, and my sins are always before me. Against you alone have I sinned, O Lord, what is evil in your sight I have done. Create in me a clean heart, O God, put your steadfast spirit in my soul, Cast me not away from your presence, Oh Lord, and take not your spirit from me. Give back to me the joy of your salvation, let your willing spirit bear me up and I shall teach your way to the ones who have wandered, and bring them all home to your side. The Passion History of Our Lord Jesus Christ A Responsory P: O Lord, have mercy upon us. The Sermon Hymn: #450, Lord, to Thee I Make Confession The Sermon Luke 23:35-43 Repent: Turn to Jesus; He Holds the Key to Heaven 35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One. 36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37 and said, If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself. 38 There was a written notice above him, which read: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. 39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: Aren t you the Christ? Save yourself and us! 40 But the other criminal rebuked him. Don t you fear God, he said, since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong. 42 The he said, Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. 43 Jesus answered him, I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise. The Offering The members of Peace Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord s work in this community and around the world. Visitors need not feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry. He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Romans 8:32 6

Words of Institution P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying: Drink of it all of you; this cup is the New Testament in My blood, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins. This do as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. Distribution Hymn: #564, Before Thy Throne I Now Appear Prayer P: Let us pray: O God the Father, the fountain and source of all goodness, who in lovingkindness sent Your only-begotten Son into the flesh, we thank You that for His sake You have given us pardon and peace in this Sacrament, and we ask You not to forsake Your children but always to rule our hearts and minds by Your Holy Spirit that we may be enabled constantly to serve You; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. C: Amen. The Benediction P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. The Closing Hymn: #563:4-5, Abide With Us the Day is Waning 8
