Saint Maron Maronite Catholic Church October 7-8, 2017 FOURTH SUNDAY OF THE HOLY CROSS REMEMBERING THE VICTIMS The events of this past week have left many of us in a daze as we witnessed the senseless murder of so many people in Las Vegas. Although we can t imagine why something so tragic could take place, we nonetheless, remain united in prayer for all of the souls that were lost and for their families who now mourn. This week s quote from Saint John Vianney reminds us, especially during these tragic times that occur too often around the world, that somehow we must also remember those who do harm to us. We cannot fathom how one individual can do such harm to others nor will we ever be able to understand it. One of the most difficult things that we are called to do at a time like this is to pray for all of the souls, including the one who did this harm to innocent people, and to pray for his family who lives with this tragic legacy left to them. We never know when our time will come. But I do believe that out of such tragedy there is something that we can gain from such an event. The one thing that I take with me is the act of those who attended this concert joined in chorus to sing God Bless America one hour 40 before this tragedy occurred. At that moment and without knowing what was about to happen to them, they asked God to bless this great nation and they gave thanks to God for all He has given them. How poignant is that? I only pray that each and every one of them knew and still knows that God was and is with them---even in their darkest hours. May each of us ask for God s blessings every moment of our lives. May we continue to pray for those who lost their lives and those who are wounded and ask God to give them the strength to carry on. And may we learn the importance of God in our lives and the lives of our children. Allah yerhammon! May their souls rest in peace! SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION) Please know that confession is available before liturgies. You may also call to set up an appointment. QUOTE OF THE WEEK "All our religion is but a false religion, and all our virtues are mere illusions and we ourselves are only hypocrites in the sight of God, if we have not that universal charity for everyone - for the good, and for the bad, for the poor and for the rich, and for all those who do us harm as much as those who do us good." Saint Maron Maronite Catholic Church First Reading 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 October 7-8, 2017 A reading from the First Letter of Saint Paul to the Thessalonians. Your blessing father Brothers and Sisters: Concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When they say, There is peace and security, then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. So then, let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him. Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing. Praise be to God always.

Gospel Reading Saint Matthew 24:45-51 The Apostle Writes: Who then is the faithful and wise slave, whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give the other slaves their allowance of food at the proper time? Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives. Truly I tell you, he will put that one in charge of all his possessions. But if that wicked slave says to himself, "My master is delayed", and he begins to beat his fellow-slaves, and eats and drinks with drunkards, the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour that he does not know. He will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. This is the truth. Peace be with you.
