April 8, 2018 West Valley Presbyterian Church This morning s theme: The Glorious Return of Christ Called to Worship Call to Worship: Psalm 24:7-10 Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle! Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory! I Sing The Mighty Power Of God I sing the mighty power of God that made the mountains rise That spread the flowing seas abroad and built the lofty skies I sing the wisdom that ordained the sun to rule the day The moon shines full at His command and all the stars obey I sing the goodness of the Lord that filled the earth with food He formed the creatures with His Word and then pronounced them good Lord! How Thy wonders are displayed where'er I turn mine eye If I survey the ground I tread or gaze upon the sky There's not a plant or flower below but makes Thy glories known And clouds arise and tempests blow by order from Thy throne While all that borrows life from Thee is ever in Thy care And everywhere that man can be thou God art present there First Scripture Reading: Matthew 17:1-8 (page 822) Confessing our Sin Prayer of Confession Our Father in heaven, we confess that we have not honored your name; we have not sought your kingdom first; we have not done your will. We have made idols of possessions and people and used your name for causes that are not consistent with you and your purposes. Forgive us, O God, for the many ways we fall short of your glory. Help us to learn to live together according to your ways through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Words of Assurance: Acts 10:43 To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name. Celebrating the Gospel O Lord, My Rock And My Redeemer O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer Greatest treasure of my longing soul My God, like You there is no other True delight is found in You alone Your grace, a well too deep to fathom Your love exceeds the heavens reach Your truth, a fount of perfect wisdom My highest good and my unending need O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer Strong defender of my weary heart My sword to fight the cruel deceiver And my shield against his hateful darts My song when enemies surround me My hope when tides of sorrow rise My joy when trials are abounding Your faithfulness, my refuge in the night O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer Gracious Savior of my ruined life My guilt and cross laid on Your shoulders In my place You suffered bled and died You rose, the grave and death are conquered You broke my bonds of sin and shame O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer May all my days bring glory to Your Name Declaring the Faith: The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 2
Speak O Lord Speak O Lord as we come to you To recieve the food of your Holy Word Take your truth, plant it deep in us Shape and fashion us in your likeness That the light of Christ might be seen today In our acts of love and our deeds of faith Speak O Lord and fulfil in us All your purposes for your glory Teach us Lord full obedience, Holy reverence, true humility. Test our thoughts and our attitudes In the radiance of Your purity. Cause our faith to rise Cause our eyes to see, Your majestic love and authority. Words of power that can never fail; Let their truth prevail over unbelief. Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds; Help us grasp the heights of Your plans for us. Truths unchanged from the dawn of time, That will echo down through eternity. And by grace we'll stand on Your promises; And by faith we'll walk as You walk with us. Speak, O Lord, 'til your church is built, And the earth is filled with Your glory. Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Consecrated by the Word Scripture: 2 Peter 1:12-21 (page 1018) Message: The Return of Christ Pastor Derek Coyle Notes: 4
I ll Not Be Shaken (Psalm 62) For God alone, I wait in silence; My soul is still before the Lord He is my rock and my salvation, My fortress strong; I trust in Him. I ll not be shaken! I ll not be shaken, For all my hope is in His love. From God alone comes my salvation; I wait and trust His steadfast love! Put not your hope in gain of riches; Seek not your rest in empty wealth. The rich are weak; the poor are mighty, Who turn to God alone for help. Pour out your heart to God our refuge And trust in Him to hear you cry. No other hope will never fail you; No other love will not run dry. Tithes and Offerings Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7 On Jordan s Stromy Banks On Jordan's stormy banks I stand And cast a wishful eye To Canaan's fair and happy land Where my possessions lie O'er all those wide extended plains Shines one eternal day There God the Son forever reigns And scatters night away I am bound, I am bound I am bound for the promised land No chilling winds or poisonous breath Can reach that healthful shore Sickness and sorrow, pain and death Are felt and feared no more When I shall reach that happy place I'll be forever blest For I shall see my Father's face And in his bosom rest 5
Compelled to Go Out Commission: James 5:7-8 Be patient, therefore brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. Benediction: 2 Thessalonians 3:18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
