Maundy Thursday Thursday before Easter Sunday This day is sometimes called, "Maundy Thursday," a term derived through the Old French mande from the Latin mandatum novum, "a new commandment" associated with John 13:34 and perhaps also with the foot-washing reported earlier in the same chapter.

Maundy Thursday Thursday before Easter Sunday John 13:34 (NKJV) 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

Maundy Thursday Pastor: In regular print. Congregation: In italics.

The Lord s Prayer (The Model Prayer) Matthew 6:9b 13 (KJV 1900) 9b Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread.

The Lord s Prayer (The Model Prayer) Matthew 6:9b 13 (KJV 1900) 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

A New Example - John 13:1 7 (NKJV) 1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

A New Example - John 13:1 7 (NKJV) 2 And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon s son, to betray Him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God,

A New Example - John 13:1 7 (NKJV) 4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.

A New Example - John 13:1 7 (NKJV) 6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, Lord, are You washing my feet? 7 Jesus answered and said to him, What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.

A New Model - John 13:12 17 (NKJV) 12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am.

A New Model - John 13:12 17 (NKJV) 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.

A New Model - John 13:12 17 (NKJV) 16 Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

A New Commandment - John 13:34 (NKJV) 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

A New Community - John 13:35 (NKJV) 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.

A New Kind of Leadership - John 21:15 17 (NKJV) 15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these? He said to Him, Yes, Lord; You know that I love You. He said to him, Feed My lambs.

A New Kind of Leadership - John 21:15 17 (NKJV) 16 He said to him again a second time, Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me? He said to Him, Yes, Lord; You know that I love You. He said to him, Tend My sheep.

A New Kind of Leadership - John 21:15 17 (NKJV) 17 He said to him the third time, Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me? Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, Do you love Me? And he said to Him, Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You. Jesus said to him, Feed My sheep.

Pastoral/Congregational Responsive Confession Pastor: Father God, we have not loved You with all our heart and mind and strength and soul. God, have mercy. Congregation: God, have mercy.

Pastoral/Congregational Responsive Confession Pastor: Father God, we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. God, have mercy. Congregation: God, have mercy.

Pastoral/Congregational Responsive Confession Pastor: Father God, we have not loved each other in the body of Christ as Christ loved us. God, have mercy. Congregation: God, have mercy.

Pastoral/Congregational Responsive Confession Pastor: Father God, we ask not only for mercy where we have fallen short but also for You to make us increasingly like Jesus. God, by your Holy Spirit, change us. Congregation: God, by your Holy Spirit, change us.

Pastoral/Congregational Responsive Confession Pastor: Father God, in our service to You and for You, let our concern be our usefulness, not our recognition. God, by your Holy Spirit, change us. Congregation: God, by your Holy Spirit, change us.

Congregational Prayer Be present, be present, Lord Jesus, our great High Priest, as you were present with your disciples, and be known to us in the breaking of bread; who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

A Responsive Reading of Biblical Instructions to Partakers of Communion 1 Corinthians 11:27 31 (NKJV) 27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. Congregation: Lord, we do not want to eat or drink in an unworthy manner.

A Responsive Reading of Biblical Instructions to Partakers of Communion 1 Corinthians 11:27 31 (NKJV) 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. Congregation: Lord, we will examine ourselves and then eat and drink.

A Responsive Reading of Biblical Instructions to Partakers of Communion 1 Corinthians 11:27 31 (NKJV) 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord s body. 30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.

A Responsive Reading of Biblical Instructions to Partakers of Communion 1 Corinthians 11:27 31 (NKJV) Congregation: Lord, we have been warned. The consequences of eating and drinking in an unworthy manner are serious. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged.

A Responsive Reading of Biblical Instructions to Partakers of Communion 1 Corinthians 11:27 31 (NKJV) Congregation: Lord, we pray like David, Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.

Pastoral/Congregational Prayer of Confession & Repentance [together in unison] Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart;

Pastoral/Congregational Prayer of Confession & Repentance [together in unison] we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of Your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us;

Pastoral/Congregational Prayer of Confession & Repentance [together in unison] that we may delight in Your will, and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your Name. Amen.

Responsive Prayer of Thanksgiving for the Body Pastor: Jesus, You were pierced for our transgressions. Congregation: Thank You, Jesus. Pastor: Jesus, You were crushed for our iniquities. Congregation: Thank You, Jesus.

Responsive Prayer of Thanksgiving for the Body Pastor: Jesus, You received the punishment that brought us peace. Congregation: Thank You, Jesus. Pastor: Jesus, by your wounds, we are healed. Congregation: Thank You, Jesus.

Responsive Prayer of Thanksgiving for the Blood Pastor: Jesus, we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place (the throne room of God) by Your blood. Congregation: Thank You, Jesus. Pastor: Jesus, we who were once far away from God have been brought near by Your blood. Congregation: Thank You, Jesus.

Responsive Prayer of Thanksgiving for the Blood Pastor: Jesus, Your blood purifies us from all sin. Congregation: Thank You, Jesus. Pastor: Jesus, you have freed us from our sins by Your blood. Congregation: Thank You, Jesus.

BENEDICTION - THE NEW COMMANDMENT Pastor: What is the new commandment? Congregation: Love one another. Pastor: Who gave this commandment? Congregation: Jesus gave this commandment.

BENEDICTION - THE NEW COMMANDMENT Pastor: To whom did Jesus give this commandment? Congregation: Jesus gave this commandment to us. Pastor: How are we to love each other? Congregation: Just like Jesus loves me. ALL: AMEN!
