MARCH 2018 In This Issue: Pastor s Perspective Easter Services Pie Auction Calendar Ministry Schedule By Pastor John Mochel Recently Nancy and Katie and I have been watching some winter Olympics. It is a bit of a Mochel tradition. To see the results of the intense training, endurance, and effort of some of these athletes is an inspiration. I was in High School with Bonnie Blair, maybe the best female speed skater of all time. Her dedication to skating was intense. None of us in her class knew how good she was, but we knew that she was rarely around. She was skating. She trained early in the morning. She trained in the afternoon. She trained at night. All this she did in order to win a gold medal. She won five. But, the reality is that most Olympic athletes and their families invest years of time and money and win no medals. There are more than 3,000 winter Olympic athletes. Less than 10% of them will receive medals. But, then what? And, what about the ones who don t get medals? They are done and have to find something else to do. In 2 Timothy 2:5 the apostle Paul compares a faithful Christian to an athlete who competes according to the rules in order to gain the prize. Paul wants to gain Jesus Christ and be rewarded by Him. This is a prize that will never gather dust in the trophy case. What is your goal in life? Are you living to achieve it? Run in such a way that you may win. Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified. (1 Cor. 9:24-27) Paul, here, is comparing his life to a race. What he is living to achieve is something that will last forever and never be taken away. And, he is living for something greater than glory for the USA or a place in the history books. He is going to bring glory to Jesus in front of all the saints who have lived and died for Him. They are our audience and it is now our turn. Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us (Continued on page 2)
(Continued from page 1) run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:1-2) Notice words like endurance, self-control, and the singleness of purpose of the athlete. Sure, life is hard and things are difficult. Hard work and training are required. There will be times when you ll be tempted to complain, to argue with God about how things are, even to give up. But, the Scripture says that it is all worth it. Do all things without grumbling or disputing; so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain. (Philippians 2:14-16) So, you have got somewhere less than 100 years for your race. That might seem like a lot of time, but it is only a moment compared with eternity. What are you going to do with your moment? There will be times you will get tired, but you don t have to do it on your own strength. God is going to give you new strength. Though youths grow weary and tired, And vigorous young men stumble badly, Yet those who wait for the LORD Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary. (Isaiah 40:30-31) If you TRUST JESUS, HE is going to give YOU the VICTORY. All you have to do is stay faithful and trusting Jesus and get to the finish line. God is going to use you to glorify Him on the way and at the finish. It is really that simple. Hard at times, but simple. So, like an athlete. make use of every morning, every afternoon, every evening. Practice and train hard because you never know when those moments of great effort and endurance will be required. That means making use of all the opportunities you have. Spend time in the Word and prayer. Learn from every message, conference, book. Give. Serve. Encourage. Teach. Tell others about Jesus. Get with people who strengthen you. Get rid of bad habits and temptations. If you trust Jesus, He is going to give you the victory!
