The Alliance World Week of Prayer May 2 9, 2010 PRAYER IS THE PRIMARY WORK OF GOD S PEOPLE We believe that nothing of lasting value can be done unless it is bathed in prayer. So passionate in his belief that prayer undergirds all ministry, Alliance founder A. B. Simpson was compelled to create a prayer league that would focus on the world s evangelization. He believed that the Prayer Alliance would prove to be the mightiest force in the spread of missions. Prayer still drives The Alliance today. Prayer is the primary work of God s people. We cannot Live the Call Together unless prayer is central to all we do as a denomination, as churches, and as individuals. For that reason we want to encourage you to make prayer the foundation of everything you are and do. For prayer resources, visit http://www.cmalliance.org/pray. SUNDAY, MAY 2 Pray for your local church and pastor. MONDAY, MAY 3 Pray for U.S. pastors and workers. TUESDAY, MAY 4 Pray for U.S. Alliance churches. WEDNESDAY, MAY 5 Pray for Alliance leaders worldwide. THURSDAY, MAY 6 Pray for international workers. FRIDAY, MAY 7 Pray for overseas C&MA national churches. SATURDAY, MAY 8 Pray for Pushing Back the Darkness initiatives around the world. SUNDAY, MAY 9 Pray for Alliance supporting organizations. Alliance World Week of Prayer page 1

SUNDAY, MAY 2 Pray for Your Local Church and Pastor God intends every local church to be a world-impacting congregation. This does not depend on the size of the congregation but on the size of our God. Heart for Missions (Matthew 28:18 20) Pray that God will give your church a heart for the nations that the members of your church will be involved in missions by praying, giving, going, and sending. Evangelistic Impact (Acts 2:46 47) Pray that God will ignite an evangelistic fervor within your church and that Christians will be personal witnesses of Jesus Christ, carrying out the Great Commission. Spirit of Unity (Psalm 133:1) Pray that God will strengthen the bonds between believers in your church as they see Him at work in their midst. Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22 23) Pray that God will make the fruit of the Spirit evident in your church Body, yielding spiritual growth. Thanksgiving (Psalm 100:4) Pray that God will create a spirit of thanksgiving in your church that an attitude of gratitude will be actively demonstrated to the church staff, those who work with children and youth, volunteers, and lay leaders. Ministries (James 1:27) Pray that God will continue to infuse His Spirit into the ministries of your church outreach, women s and men s ministries, youth and children s programs, care for the hurting and needy, worship, and missions. Leadership (Proverbs 9:10) Pray that God will grant wisdom and direction to your pastor, elders, governing board, and church staff, giving them a clear vision of His will for your church. Your pastor Ask your pastor for five specific needs to pray for. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Alliance World Week of Prayer page 2

MONDAY, MAY 3 Pray for U.S. Alliance Pastors and Workers Consistent intercessory prayer releases the Lord s empowerment in the life of the pastor, strengthening and enabling him to persevere in the ministry to which God has called him. Families Pray that pastors will set aside intentional times of meaningful interaction and recreation with their family and that God will guard and strengthen their marriages. Prayer Life Pray that God will give pastors a desire to pray with faith and discernment and provide opportunities for prayer with other pastors, church leaders, and laypeople. Holy Living Pray that pastors will pursue holiness in all aspects of life and ministry. Pray that they will not give in to temptation. Pray for purity of body and mind. Priorities Pray that God will give pastors wisdom as they prioritize the precious minutes in the day, discern what is most important, and guard against the tyranny of the urgent. Fear of Failure Pray that God will bind the fear of failure and the desire for approval from others and that confidence in the Lord will increase through study of the Scriptures. Daily Stresses Pray that criticisms and inordinate expectations will be cast aside, that stress and fatigue will be overcome; and that rumors and gossip will be dispelled. Boldness Pray that God will give pastors boldness to confront sin in the church. Focus on the Cross Pray that pride will not enter into a pastor s ministry. Spirit-Filled Preaching Pray that pastors will preach God s Word in the power of the Holy Spirit and that their sermon preparation time will be rich and anointed. Reproducing Fruit Pray that God will bless pastors with lasting, reproducing fruit that converts will become disciples who, in turn, disciple others. Alliance World Week of Prayer page 3

TUESDAY, MAY 4 Pray for U.S. Alliance Churches A church with a vision for a lost world is close to the heart of God. And followers of Jesus, living in community, can t help but tell others about Him. This is part of making disciples of all nations. It is through the Church that the gospel will be proclaimed in our communities and around the world. Clear Witness (John 14:6) Pray that our churches will maintain a clear witness to the uniqueness of Christ in the midst of religious pluralism, urbanization, postmodernism, and relativism. Centrality of Scripture (Psalm 119:11) Pray that our churches will remain true to the centrality of Scripture and not be influenced by prevailing culture, philosophies, and religions. Involved Congregations (Romans 12:4 6) Pray that our church families will actively use their gifts for effective ministry and to build up of the church Body. Christlike Leadership (1 Timothy 3:1 7) Pray that our pastors and lay leaders will model holy living and a heart for the lost. Spiritual Depth (1 Peter 5:1 3) Pray that church leaders will motivate their congregations to pursue a deeper life in Christ. Victorious Optimism (Romans 8:37) Pray that Alliance believers will not be timid in response to Satan s attacks but will continue to proclaim the gospel message with boldness and passion. Engaged Youth (Luke 18:16) Pray that young people will not turn their backs on Christian upbringing because of a growing generation gap and the pressures of society. Pray that our youth will be evangelized afresh and will be on fire for Christ. Revival (Acts 2:1 4) Pray that God will bring authentic, life-changing revival to our churches. Missionary Vision (Matthew 24:14) Pray for the awakening and growth of a missions heart among our churches. Pray that they will adopt an Acts 1:8 mindset in response to Christ s Great Commission. Alliance World Week of Prayer page 4

WEDNESDAY, MAY 5 Pray for Alliance Leaders Worldwide Our leaders include: C&MA officers Members of the Board of Directors National Office administration District superintendents and staff Regional and field directors Leaders of our supporting organization Prayer for leadership is not an option but a necessity, which will bring about a positive change in the effectiveness of leaders and their ministries. Prayer is one of the most important elements of a successful ministry. Our leaders are chosen by God, and through our faithful, specific intercession, God will release them to be all He wants them to be. Spiritual Energy (1 Timothy 3:16) Pray for our leaders to seek an ever-increasing knowledge of God, to walk faithfully in the Spirit, to be sensitive to God s voice, and to speak the Word with boldness. Unity (Colossians 3:14) Pray that God will give our leaders a spirit of unity, not competition; humility, not superiority; cooperation, not defensiveness. Vision (Proverbs 29:18) Pray that God will give our leaders clarity and discernment of His vision for the C&MA and pure motives that are aligned with His Word. Health (3 John 1:2) Pray that our leaders will maintain physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Pray that God will lead pastors to sustain faithful prayer lives and submit every aspect of their lives to God. Protection (Psalm 140:1 8) Pray that God will protect our leaders against the schemes and attacks of the enemy as he seeks to undermine and sabotage their efforts to lead. Priorities (Matthew 6:33) Pray that God will help our leaders to prioritize their time and ministries and making their relationship with God their first priority. Family (Isaiah 54:13) Pray that God will strengthen our leaders families and marriages. Pray for unity among family members and emotional and spiritual support and encouragement. Alliance World Week of Prayer page 5

THURSDAY, MAY 6 Pray for Alliance International Workers More than 900 U.S. C&MA international workers are serving in 81 countries. They are invading enemy territory where Satan s kingdom has never been challenged. They are in the middle of a spiritual battle, and intercessors must see themselves as integral to the advance of the gospel and the empowerment of those who carry it to the ends of the earth. Spiritual Vitality (Psalm 23:5b) Pray for the daily refreshing of God s Spirit and the assurance of God s call on the lives of our international workers. Pray against anything that would interfere with their daily time with the Lord. Families (Acts 2:39) Pray that God will strengthen families and marriages. Pray that parents will balance ministry and family needs and spend quality time with each child. Pray that MKs will learn to value their parents ministry. For singles, pray that they will develop strong, healthy friendships and find contentment in singleness. Children s Education (Proverbs 22:6) Pray for discernment as parents and children choose the best schooling options for their family. Pray for the children as they adjust to a new educational setting, which may sometimes involve lengthy separation from their parents. Pray that the children will form close, supportive friendships and seek out godly mentors. Health and Protection (Psalm 5:11) Pray against discouragement among international workers resulting from physical and emotional affliction. Pray for protection from life-threatening diseases, armed robbery, and other attacks of the enemy. Cultural Adjustment (1 Corinthians 9:22) Pray for openness, perseverance, and gracious flexibility as our international workers adjust to new languages, customs, foods, climates, value systems, and attitudes. Pray for cultural sensitivity as they work with overseas national churches. Effective Ministry (2 Corinthians 3:6) Pray for God s anointing on their ministries, for sensitivity and creativity in reaching out to the lost, for courage and clarity in preaching the gospel, and for the ability to see people and situations from God s perspective. Fruitfulness (Colossians 1:10) Pray that God will give our international workers a continued zeal to share the gospel with the lost peoples of the world. Pray that they will see lasting fruit as converts mature into disciples who will disciple others. Alliance World Week of Prayer page 6

FRIDAY, MAY 7 Pray for Overseas C&MA National Churches At any moment of the day or night, somewhere on planet earth, Alliance congregations are meeting in worship, and C&MA international workers and local church leaders are advancing the cause of Christ. Every four minutes, someone comes to faith in Christ as a result of the witness of an Alliance person. With more than 20,000 churches and 4 million adherents worldwide, it truly may be said that the sun never sets on this fellowship of Christians despite the constant fluctuations of international politics and developments. Now more than ever, these national churches and their leaders need our prayers as they face increasing persecution, spiritual opposition, natural disasters, and economic hardships. Pray for spiritual vitality and authenticity among C&MA believers around the world. Pray for a growing Great Commission passion within the congregations. Pray that Christlike leadership and Christ-centered ministry will characterize our national churches. Pray for the local evangelistic and community outreach efforts of these churches. Pray that new believers will be nurtured and discipled to spiritual maturity. Pray for the national Bible schools and seminaries as they train and equip future church leaders. Pray for the development of a cross-cultural missionary effort within our national churches. Pray for protection and perseverance of our churches in times of persecution. Pray for strong and fruitful partnerships between our national churches and C&MA missions teams. Pray for positive relationships between our national churches and their local and national governments. Pray for the financial stability of our national churches. Alliance World Week of Prayer page 7

SATURDAY, MAY 8 Pray for Pushing Back the Darkness At General Council 2009, a world map was presented contrasting well-lit concentrations of Christ followers with areas shrouded in darkness, where access to the gospel is critically low. That map is available at http://www.cmalliance.org/resources/missions. The vision was cast for The Alliance to move aggressively to push back the darkness in four specific, very dark places: two countries in North and Central Asia, one in North Africa, and India. In addition, The Alliance would partner with four other Alliance World Fellowship churches to push back the darkness in other places. The Goal of Establishing Christ-Centered Churches This goal will be achieved by many people working together: local Alliance churches in the United States, our international workers including those serving with CAMA and International Fellowship of Alliance Professionals (IFAP), Alliance World Fellowship partner churches from around the world, and a host of other strategic partners. Prayer for Pushing Back the Darkness Pray that God will call and equip laborers to enter into these new fields. Pray for boldness to share the gospel and sensitivity to proclaim it clearly and relevantly. Pray for opportunities to tell lost people about God s love. Pray for the safety of those who carry the gospel to the least-reached people of our world. Pray for salvation of many, particularly among unreached people groups. Pray for Kingdom synergy as we partner with others. Pray for the Holy Spirit to powerfully integrate words and deeds to make Christ known. Pray for help in discipling new believers to be faithful followers and worshippers in a local church. Get involved in the Pushing Back the Darkness prayer initiative by sending an e-mail request to pbd@cmalliance.org. Monthly, confidential prayer updates will be sent to you. Alliance World Week of Prayer page 8
