Pastor s Poetry Post-Its The Lake Isle of Innisfree I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree, And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made; Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee, And live alone in the bee-loud glade. And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow, Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings; There midnight s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow, And evening full of the linnet s wings. I will arise and go now, for always night and day I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore; While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey, I hear it I the deep heart s core. William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) We honor St. Patrick this weekend by invoking Ireland s greatest poet, William Butler Yeats! The Lake Isle of Innisfree is one of my favorite poems, if not number one. I often quote it at funerals for someone of Irish descent. When my time comes I hope someone will read it over me. Innisfree means the Free Isle. It is actually an uninhabited island in the middle of an Irish lake. Above all it is a metaphor for a utopia a place of perfect peace and harmony. Such perfection does not exist in the real world, but still we dream of it as Yeats does in Innisfree. Lent offers the opportunity to find this solace within ourselves. Yeats poem of an idyllic isle in the middle of a lake is perfect for a St. Patrick s Day in the middle of Lent. For me Lent is more like an Innisfree than a howling desert. We clear some space with sacrifice, prayer and generosity in Lent to meet Jesus more intimately as our Prince of Peace of mind and heart. Lent prepares for the Easter joy of knowing in our deep heart s core that an eternity of peace and contentment await us in a place even better than the beautiful Innisfree. Fr. Last weekend I had the privilege of formally introducing our Confirmation Candidates to our Parishioners here at Holy Innocents. On Saturday, October 13, 2018 the Most Rev. Peter Byrne will confer the Sacrament of Confirmation upon 78 of our young adults. These beautiful young men and women, after much prayer, study, and service have decided to continue their journey towards Confirmation and are eager to live out their Baptismal Promises. I can attest to the fact that these young adults are being led by Catechists who are sharing their Faith in accordance with the guidelines of the Archdiocese of New York. We thank the following 8th Grade Catechists for their commitment, dedication and zeal: Jean Bianco, Norma Carerro, Joe Dempsey, Jack Fitzgerald, Maria Fitzgerald, Stacy McAllister and Doris Sharp. We ask our parishioners to continue to pray and support our Confirmation Candidates, their Catechists, Sponsors and Parents. The kindergarteners really enjoyed having them as their group leaders each week. CYO Service Projects Update! The 6 th Grade CYO Girls are running another clothing collection drive, this time for the Junior and Senior Classes of Claremont International High School. Claremont is a designated, Title I School where the majority of the students come from high poverty areas in the South Bronx. The Claremont high schoolers will be starting their internships this week (2/28) and they have expressed concern to their teacher, a Pleasantville mom, that they do not have enough professional looking clothing to wear in a business setting. We want to help them by collecting new or gentlyused professional/business casual clothing in ALL SIZES. We need clothes for young men AND young women. Please leave all clothing donations in the designated box on the porch @ 21 Guion Street (between Manville and Bedford) No need to ring the bell. No shoes or accessories at this time as the focus is just on clothing. The internships and the clothes drive will last for several months this spring. #490 Page4

This weekend, in honor of St. Patrick s Day, we have chosen Christ Before Us as our entrance hymn. It is #410 in our hymnal and was written by Janet Sullivan Whitaker. The title and first verse are based on St. Patrick s breastplate. St. Patrick's Breastplate is a popular prayer attributed to Ireland s most beloved patron saint. According to tradition, St. Patrick wrote it in 433 A.D. for divine protection before successfully converting the Irish King Leoghaire and his subjects from paganism to Christianity. The term breastplate refers to a piece of armor worn in battle. More recent scholarship suggests its author was anonymous. In any case, this prayer certainly reflects the spirit with which St. Patrick brought our faith to Ireland. Sacrament of Reconciliation Monday, March 26th from 7-8pm Holy Innocents Church Wednesday, March 28th from 4-5pm Our Lady of Pompeii Church Friday, March 30th from 7-8pm Holy Innocents Church Saturday, March 31st from 3-4pm Holy Innocents Church The tune is based on Suo Gan, a traditional Welsh lullaby, written by an anonymous composer. It was first recorded in print around 1800. The song s title simply means lullaby in Welsh (suo=lull, cân = song). Janèt Sullivan Whitaker (pronounced Janette) is a talented cantor, keyboardist, percussionist, composer and clinician. She has presented workshops on cantor dynamics, lector formation, parish repertoire, song of the assembly and keyboard improvisation. As cantor, Janèt has led the assembly at many liturgical events, including National Association of Pastoral Musicians conventions. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from California State University, Hayward, and a Master of Theological Studies from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley. Janèt is a contributing composer and singing member of the Daughters of God, a group of women musicians committed to contemporary Christian music. Currently she serves as full-time director of music and liturgy at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in San Ramon, California, where she lives with her husband, Brian, and their son. We have used several of Janèt s compositions in our liturgies including Here at This Table, Wash Me Clean and In Every Age. FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT Gospel: John 12:20-33: Jesus was afraid of the suffering he knew he must face. Yet he explained just as a grain of wheat must die to be harvested, he had to face his hour of suffering to glorify his Father s name. Jesus explained that once he was lifted from earth, he could draw all people to himself, lifting them to eternal life.
