A moment of silence was observed in memory of our long-time member Angelo Dimech who entered eternal life on April 19 th. Last month we welcomed three new members Charlie Mizzi of Hayward and A.J. Magri and Joey Brenner of San Francisco. We hope that we will see them at the Club's social events and at the meetings. On April 7 th, Joe Attard, through his lawyer, submitted to the Superior Court of San Mateo County, a Request for Dismissal with Prejudice, of the lawsuit in which the Maltese-American Social Club and President Brian Ciappara were the defendants. The Court granted the Dismissal Request. "With Prejudice" means that Joe Attard cannot sue the Maltese Club again regarding his expulsion from the Club. Some other settlements are still in progress and more information will be given out when comes available. We are still in contact with our Directors and Officers insurance carrier regarding the reimbursement of funds that we paid to our lawyer. The Family Pasta Bingo Night that was held on April 8 th was a Super Success. About one hundred and forty-one (141) people attended. Over sixty-four (64) prizes were raffled off and many people walked out with two and even three prizes. Many thanks to all those who attended, to our Entertainment Chairperson Karen Borg, and to all the others who worked so hard to make this event so much fun. I don't want to miss thanking Devon (Kathy Borg's son) who is our new kitchen helper apprentice. Devon worked very hard helping Master Chefs, Jimmy Frendo and Dan Catania, who prepared all the food for us. Thank you.

Rest In Peace Our deepest sympathy to the family of Angelo Dimech Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord and may perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Upcoming Maltese Community Events Mother s Day Dinner Dance May 13 th ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ FATHER S DAY 50 s DINNER DANCE June 17 th God could not be everywhere, so he created mothers. Jewish Proverb On Sunday, April 23 rd, fifty-eight (58) people, attended a fun filled Family Bowling Night at Sea Bowl in Pacifica. Thirty-eight (38) persons bowled while the others preferred to watch. Pizza and soda were provided. This event was very well organized by Karen Borg and her sister Kathy. It was amazing to see how many good bowlers we have in the Maltese community. Karen plans to hold another bowling night in the future. Thank you, Karen and Kathy. James and Eleonora Mizzi Rivera donated a brand-new microwave oven and a chafing dish to the Club. The microwave oven has already been put in service and the chafing dish will be used at our next social function. Thank you very much for your generosity. We have had four roofing contractors come to the Club to give us estimates for re-roofing the Club. As soon as their estimates are received, they will be forwarded to the House Committee for evaluation and a contract will be signed so that the work will begin. After the roof is completed, the sheetrock damage will be repaired, the dance floor refurbished and the carpet cleaned. This project is going to cost a lot of money, so any donation towards this costly project will be greatly appreciated. The Bylaws Revision Committee is asking all the members to give their input regarding which sections of the Bylaws they feel need to be revised. Please send in your suggestions by mail to the Secretary of the Club so that the committee members can start their work. The next social event is the Mother's Day Dinner Dance, to be held on May 13 th. Let's all get together and honor our beloved Mothers. On June 17 th, a 50's themed Father's Day Dinner Dance will be held. Ladies put on your poodle skirts and gentlemen put on your t-shirts and jeans! Come and enjoy a great meal and let's dance the night away to some great 50's music. Where did those days go? A flier is included in this newsletter, so please send in your reservations early. Please note that the May General Membership Meeting will not be held on the last Sunday of the month which is May 28 th as it is the Memorial Day weekend. Instead it will be held a week earlier on Sunday, May 21 st at 10:30 am. After the meeting, the Maltese Historical Association will be having the Maltese Elders Assembly. This event, which is by invitation only, is for Maltese people and/or their spouses who because of age, are unable to get out very much anymore. Anyone is welcome to visit with the elders, before or after the luncheon. On June 25 th, the Maltese Cross Foundation will be holding its annual Mnarja Picnic. As it has been for many years, there will not be a General Membership Meeting in the month of June so that everyone can attend this picnic which raises money to support the Educational Scholarship Program that Maltese students can apply for. Some of the profits are distributed to

However, he did send a message to the President and asked him to convey to the members. He also had very promising meetings with the Prime Minister and the President of Malta. Primarily they discussed the Maltese community in the San Francisco Bay Area. He also reminded us that at the end of May, a Maltese TV crew will be filming a program on the Maltese community in the San Francisco Bay Area. Anyone interested in this program should let him or Mr. Ciappara know. THIS MONTH IN MALTESE HISTORY by Mona Vella-Nicholas APRIL IN MALTESE HISTORY April 1942 --- The 47 Maltese who have been exiled to Uganda in February under suspicion of being pro-italian file an appeal. The Maltese Court of Appeals sides with the exiles; however, the 47 remain incarcerated in Uganda for almost three more years. They are finally allowed to return to Malta in March of 1945. April 9, 1942 --- Mosta's Rotunda Church is bombed by German aircraft. It is a Thursday afternoon and over 250 people have gathered in the church for the weekly Holy Hour devotion. The first bomb ruptures the dome, hits a fresco of Jesus and the Apostles on Origin of Maltese Last Names Debono Is your last name Debono? If so, you may be interested in knowing where your name comes from. Debono is of Italian origin. "Bono" was used as a first name in parts of Italy. It comes from the Latin "bonus", which means "good" or "kind." In modern Italian, it can also mean "good-natured." The last name dates back to the 15th century in Malta. Welcome to the newest members of the club: A.J. Magri and her husband, Joey Brenner!
