REPORT or Superintending School Committee. TO THE CITIZENS Ok BOCKSPOKTi In presenting our report of the condition of the public schools during the past year, it seems fitting to refer briefly to the memory of one of our number, Mr Reed, Who was recently removed from our midst by the hand of death. We desire to express our high appreciation of the services rendered by him, both as a member of the committee, and for many years the successful principal of the Grammar school. He was deeply interested in the success of our public schools, and in his death a very great loss has been sustained, He Was able to teach but two Weeks during the fall term, and after an intermission of a few Weeks the school was finished by Mr. Stanley Gray. It is now very successfully taught by Miss Hatch, assisted by Miss Keene, During the past two terms, the services of Mr, K. J. Knowlton of Bangor, have been secured to give instruction in penmanship in our village schools, He is a teacher of large experience, and has already awakened a lively interest in that branch of instruction which is very often too much neglected. No change has been made in the teachers of the primary and intermediate schools. They have all been very devoted to their Work and good results have been accomplished. On account of whooping cough In district No. 2, the summer school was somewhat interrupted, and the attendance Was quite small. Owing to the prevalence of scarlet fever in district No. 7, the winter term of school was closed for a short time aud the good work Which has been characteristic of this school, Was somewhat impeded by the unfortunate event. Twenty-five different teachers have been employed in our public schools during the past year. In a few instances, owing to a lack of discipline and failure to keep the pupils sufficiently interested in their studies the work has not been all that could be desired. Most of our schools, however, have been taught by teachers of much experience, and the scholars have made good advancement in their studies. The Introduction of free text books during the past year has given your committee an unusual amount of work and responsibility. A large number of books have been presented for our Inspection by the representatives of different publishing houses, and in some cases it has been quite difficult to decide Upon the merits of the different publications. Much time and care has been given to the matter, and as the result of our deliberations the following books have been selected. Readers Lippineott'S New Series, (For supplementary use) Harper's Fifth, Speller Gilbert's School Studies in Words,

Arithmetics Greenleafs Series. First Lessons in Numbers. Brief Course in Arithmetic, Complete Arithmetic. Arithmetic 31 (Mental) Colburn s First Lessons. Grammar Miss Hyde s Lessons in English. G eogra p h y H a r pe r*s. 4 (Physical) Butlers. Algebra Olney s First Principles. Physics Avery s. Book-Keeping Meservey s. History Eggleston s and Barue s, Physiology Smith s. A little more than twenty seven hundred books have been purchased. Each one has been labeled, numbered and charged to the district to which it lias been assigned. Books which have not been distributed, are now in the hands of the committee, and will be given to the scholars as they may be needed. The free text book system has worked very satisfactorly thus far, and there is now a uniform system of study in all our schools. Scholars have manifested much interest in the care of their books, and in nearly every instance have returned them in good condition at the close of the term. The books have been bought on very favorable terms, and by strict economy we have been able to keep considerably within the amount appropriate by the town for their purchase. Our school-houses are for the most part in quite good condition, although a few are sadly in need of repair. Our schoolhouses should be made pleasant, comfortable and attractive, and supplied with a suitable number of maps and charts. In closing we would urge upon agents the importance of being more prompt in reporting to the committee the number of scholars in their respective districts, and also of the opening and closing of the several terms during the year. Respectfully submitted, B u c k s p o r t, Feb. 17, 1891. H. L. SNOAV, 1g ς, Oommittff A. F. PAGE, J &* * gommiti EE.
