German-American Social Club of Sarasota axãáäxààxü April through September 2013 Dear Club Members, First and foremost I want to thank all of our volunteers, officers and directors for their help in finding a new hall for our dances. It was quite a task and I firmly believe after we had two dances in the new hall that we made a good choice. The new seating arrangement we tried at the Anniversary Dance seems to work just fine and we probably will keep that for the future. If you want to sit at a certain table, please make your reservations early and let Brigitte know what table you choose. The reservation list will be closed the Wednesday before the dance. After that deadline you will be seated where ever there is room left. Since our day trip to the Hard Rock Café and Casino in Tampa was such a huge success I m planning for another one this Fall. We had 25 participants and every one of them just had a great time. So look forward and read the newsletter for my announcement. Hoping you all had a Happy Easter and looking forward to see you at the next dances. German-American Social Club of Sarasota - Page 2 Klaus and Gudrun Schymanek (our chefs) ask that you pleeeeease make reservations for dinner with Brigitte when you call her (941) 371-7786. It is just too difficult, if not impossible, to estimate how much food might be needed for those who wish to eat, but didn t reserve. German-American Social Club of Sarasota - Page 3 Margot hits 100 During our Fasching dance on January 26, 2013 we celebrated our long-time member, Margot Scheiterlein s 100 th Birthday a little early. Her real birthday was on February 23 rd when she partied with her large family, going down to a hand full of generations, and friends. Her daughter, Belinda Chase, gives us a little glimpse into her Mom s life when she writes: Born in Dortmund, Germany, Margot traveled with her parents at the age of less than one year old to McKeesport, PA. She had just started school there when the family decided to move back to Germany. Later, at the age of 14, she was given the opportunity to travel, alone, back to the US to join her father who had found work in Detroit. She came in through Ellis Island and lived in Detroit for a while; then Bay City, where she lived with her first husband and two daughters, Rita and Lucy; then Port Huron, where her parents had bought a farm; and, in 1948 moved down to Sarasota, FL with her second husband and where I, her third daughter, was born. So, at the age of 14 my Mom hit the ground running in the United States and hasn t stopped yet! As long as I can remember she has been active in every way loving her job as a waitress, deeply involved with family, traveling with friends, and dancing always dancing! She has always had knitting needles and crochet hooks but also had sweat suits and walking shoes. She is blessed with exceptional energy and has put it to good use: in her garden, in her home or on the dance floor. And now, even though she has slowed down a bit, she can t keep her feet still when the music starts! Happy 100 th Mom!!! -Belinda I want to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt Danke Schön for all the hugs, congratulations, the poem, the bouquet of flowers and all your good wishes for my 100 th birthday. I was thrilled about all the attention. Margot Scheiterlein

German-American Social Club of Sarasota - Page 5 Travel Report: Experiencing the Sites of Ancient Civilizations & Religions in Israel & Jordan After years of cancellations and postponements, we finally traveled to Israel and Jordan in September 2012. We saw the Holy Land and the remains of ancient cultures that flourished there 2000 years ago. The Summer of 2012 seemed relatively peaceful in Israel and Jordan and so we joined a guided tour on September 8 th. Once again, bombs again were exchanged between Arabs in Gaza and Israel in November 2012. Rioting took place in Jordan over the raising of fuel costs in December 2012. Timing is everything and so we had a great trip in September 2012. In addition to human caused explosions, this area of the world is subject to earthquakes because the African and Asian tectonic plates meet along a north south line including the Dead Sea. There are resulting ruins in the Holy Land from ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic civilizations. The Crusaders also left their castles during the wars to win back the Holy Land from the Muslims. The hilly, arid and rocky country doesn t look like an area from which would come the great religions of the world Christian, Jewish and Muslim. The Jordan River flows from Lebanon to northern Israel to the Sea of Galilee (Lake Tiberias) and then along the border of Jordan and Israel to the Dead Sea. This water is the main source for drinking and irrigation. The Dead Sea is 1300 ft. below sea level and is 10 times saltier than sea water. We were able to literally sit on this water. In Jordan our tour group was accompanied by a member of the Jordanian tourist police but fortunately he had nothing much to do. Most women including those in high school wear head cover and long dress despite having a monarch whose mother was an American. Amman is the capital city and has a population of 300,000. Jerash in northern Jordan (40 miles south of Syria) is the site of a sprawling area of Roman ruins including a theater, hippodrome, temples and a castle complete with drawbridge. Mt. Nebo at elevation of 2500 ft. is the site where Moses came and viewed the Dead Sea as we were able to do. Petra in the south of Jordan is an ancient city that thrived about 500 A.D. and is carved into red sandstone are temples, amphitheater and a treasury building. Petra was at the crossroads of the old silk and spice trade routes and exacted tolls for income. The accommodations and food in Jordan were good. Our tour group crossed a bridge over the Jordan River to enter Israel without difficulty. Israel is much like a European country unlike other countries of the Mid -East. The population of Israel is 8 million and is 80% Jewish, 15% Muslim and 5% Christian. Unlike Arabs in most adjacent countries, women may dress western style and have full access to professional education. The Jewish population is 75% secular, 15% traditional Orthodox and 10% ultra Orthodox. The Golan Heights at the northern part of Israel was won from Syria after the 6-Day War of 1967. Israel has formally annexed the Golan Heights because of its strategic value and its economic importance with its agriculture. Jerusalem is the largest city with 800,000 people. Tel Aviv has 500,000 and Haifa has 300,000. Rabin Square in Tel Aviv is the site of the 1995 assassination of Prime Minister Itzak Rabin. He was shot by an Israeli opponent of the peace process that Rabin was pursuing with the Arab states. Israel seems to be further away from peace than it has ever been.

German-American Social Club of Sarasota - Page 6 Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu received a lukewarm vote for a third term on January 2013. He has promoted Jewish settlements in the Israeli held West Bank against the wishes of the United Nations and the United States. This policy has made it more difficult for the so-called two state solution with the Palestinians. Although Israel is only 8130 sq. miles, there is very much to see. Evidence of the ancient cultures are scattered throughout Israel with Roman culture to 400 A.D., Byzantine culture to 700 A.D., Crusaders to 1300 A.D., Turks to 1914 A.D. Often temples and remains of important buildings are found buried below street level. The Wailing Wall in Old Jerusalem is part of the wall of the ancient temple that is largely seen by way of underground tunnel. We visited Nazareth, Bethlehem and the Sea of Galilee. In Jerusalem we walked the Via Deloroso where Jesus carried his cross to his crucifixion. We enjoyed our trip to the Holy Land and it is an experience that we feel gratified to have had. It is unfortunate that war makes this area periodically dangerous to visit. Stephanie & Milton Kruk Hell is Where: The Police are German, The Chefs are British, The Mechanics are French, The Lovers are Swiss And it's all organized by the Italians. (for Heaven see page 4) I hope you all had a joyous Easter and I wish everybody a fun and happy Spring and Summer. Be well until we meet again.
