JUST FOR JUNIORS Summer 2016 Hi, Juniors, This season we will be studying many important passages in the Bible. We will be talking about how to wait patiently and obediently for God. We will learn about sin and how all people have disobeyed God s commands. Most important, we will talk about Jesus and how He came to be the Saviour for all people who believe in Him. We will think about how we can return to God and ask for His forgiveness. This season your class will learn a very simple method to help you with your Bible studies. Your teacher will show you how to make a mind map that will help you see how words and ideas make new connections in your thoughts. To make a simple mind map, just write a word in the middle of a piece of paper. For example, you could write the name Jesus. Draw a circle around the word, and draw lines pointing out from the circle. At the end of each line, write another word or phrase that you think of when you think about Jesus. You could write Son of God, Saviour, Messiah, Christ, King, Lamb of God, and Lord. Then you will add lines pointing out from these words. You will add more thoughts and ideas that come to your mind. For example, you could draw lines out from the Lamb of God circle. At the end of those lines you can write sacrifice and died for my sins. Continue to draw as many lines and add as many words and phrases as you think of when you think about Jesus. You may see new thoughts and ideas that you had not noticed before. You may learn new things about the Lamb who came to be the sacrifice for our sins. You can make a mind map anytime you are learning and thinking about new things. You can use a mind map to help with your Bible studies or daily schoolwork. You can make a mind map alone or take turns with a friend or study partner. You can make small mind maps, or add words and phrases to make big mind maps of many new thoughts and ideas. God wants His people to learn about Him. He is pleased anytime we think about His Scriptures. I hope that making a mind map will help you the next time you study God s Word. 2 The Incorporated Trustees of the Gospel Worker Society Union Gospel Press Division Box 6059 Cleveland, Ohio 44101 With God s blessing, Elizabeth Shultz

4 Jessica s Wrong Act On Saturday afternoons, Jessica babysat for a woman named Mrs. Libby, who lived a few houses away. One Saturday, Jessica read Mrs. Libby s daughter a story and rocked her to sleep. After she put the girl carefully in her toddler bed, Jessica began to wander through the big house. Jessica peeked into the child s playroom full of toys. She wandered through the living room with its big-screen TV. This family has nicer things than my family, she thought. Jessica tiptoed into Mrs. Libby s bedroom. She saw Mrs. Libby s nice clothes and shoes. Jessica saw a tray on the dresser that held a few shining necklaces and sparkling rings. I ll never have nice things like that, Jessica thought. She picked up one ring and held it in her hand. Mrs. Libby will never miss one ring, Jessica told herself. If she does, she ll just think she lost it. Jessica slipped the ring into her skirt pocket. Mrs. Libby returned from shopping and carried her groceries into the kitchen. Thank you for babysitting today, she said, smiling. She opened her purse and gave Jessica a crisp ten-dollar bill. Jessica thanked her and walked slowly home. As she walked, she began to think. If Mom finds the ring, she ll know I stole it and she ll punish me. Stealing is a sin. Mrs. Libby won t trust me anymore, either. Jessica showed Mom the ring. I just wanted something nice, she whispered. Everyone does wrong sometimes. You know you have to return the ring. Mrs. Libby may forgive you, but she might not ask you to babysit anymore, Mom said. Jessica nodded. I feel bad about what I did. I will pray for forgiveness and ask the Lord to help me never do this again, she said quietly. LESSON 1 JUNE 5, 2016 The Day of the Lord LESSON: Zephaniah 1:4-6, 14-16; 2:3 Zephaniah told the people of Judah to seek the Lord, since the Day of the Lord was drawing near. GOLDEN TEXT Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth (Zephaniah 2:3). Scripture Lesson Text ZEPH. 1:4 I will also stretch out mine hand upon Ju dah, and upon all the inhabitants of Je-ru sa-lem; and I will cut off the remnant of Ba al from this place, and the name of the Chem a-rims with the priests; 5 And them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops; and them that worship and that swear by the LORD, and that swear by Mal cham; 6 And them that are turned back from the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor enquired for him. 14 The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly. 15 That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, 16 A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers. 2:3 Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD S anger. 6 Our Lesson Tells Us Henry and Hudson watched the ants working inside the ant farm. They saw the tiny creatures rearranging the grains of sand to build the rooms of their home. I read in a book that ants can carry rocks that are much heavier than their bodies, Henry said. That s true, Mrs. Henderson, their teacher, said as she came to join the boys. Ants look small and helpless, but they are very strong. They take care of others in their colonies. The teacher continued, I keep the ants in our classroom to remind us to be like them. Christians are called to be humble and meek. We are also called to be strong and to help others in our communities. Henry saw an ant lift a tiny piece of rock over its head. I wish I were as strong as an ant! Henry said. Long ago a man named Zephaniah lived in the land of Judah. Zephaniah was a good man. He was a holy prophet of God. Zephaniah loved God and wanted to obey Him. He listened to what God said and told the people all that God wanted him to say. When Zephaniah lived, God s people had forgotten how to worship the Lord. Many people refused to follow God s laws and commands. Many people in Judah worshipped false gods and idols. The people did evil, wicked things when they worshipped their false gods. Zephaniah came to warn the people about their wicked ways. He wrote down the words God told him to tell the people. Those words became the book of Zephaniah in our Bibles. Zephaniah wrote that God said He would punish the people of Judah. He would judge the people of Jerusalem. God said He would destroy the people who worshipped Baal and other false gods. God said He would punish the people who worshipped the stars. He warned He would judge the people who asked the planets and stars for wisdom and knowledge. He would destroy all the people who worshipped the false god Malcham. God said He would punish the people who had turned away from Him. He would judge the people who did not worship Him and follow His commands. Today many people turn their backs on God. They reject His Word and refuse to follow His commands. They refuse to listen to the gospel or accept God s Son, Jesus. Many people do not pray to seek God or ask Him for help. Many people today worship things instead of God. They love their money, cars, and homes more than they love God. They think about their jobs, friends, and hobbies more than they think about God. They watch television more than they read the Bible and go to movies more than they go to church. Many buy new clothes and games instead of helping God s people. Many people today have turned away from God and rejected His Word. They have refused to obey God and worship Him. Turning away from God is sin. Rejecting God s Word and refusing to obey His commands are sins. People sin anytime they love something else
