1 Manuscripts & Folklife Archives Department of Library Special Collections Western Kentucky University Bowling Green, KY 42101 HINES Family Collection Descriptive Inventory 1 box. 15 folders. 161 items. 1814-1960. Originals & photocopies. 1942.8.3 BIOGRAPHY James Hines (1783-1864) was born in Campbell County, Virginia, the son of Henry, Sr.(?) (1732-1810) and Sara Hines. James Hines moved to Kentucky around 1815 where he became a successful lawyer and banker. James brother John (1771-1853), the eldest son (of Henry Hines, Sr.), moved to Kentucky in 1803, purchasing land on the Gasper River in Warren County and thereon operating a saw and grist mill. John prospered and accumulated 3,000 acres of land and almost 100 slaves. John Henry Hines (1839-1879), the grandson of James Hines and son of Fayette Henry, was a lieutenant in the Confederate Army when captured and imprisoned at Johnson s Island near Sandusky, Ohio. Earlier, as a member of John Hunt Morgan s cavalry unit, he participated in the Battle of Shiloh. John Henry s brother, Edward Ludlow Hines (1842-1920), was a captain in the Confederate Army and after the war he was appointed master commissioner and clerk of the Warren County Circuit Court. John Porter Hines (1878-1961), the son of Edward Ludlow Hines, was a steamboat captain for thirty years and worked at Western Kentucky University for twenty-eight years as a mechanical engineer. COLLECTION This collection consists firstly of letters (3 items) written by James Hines to his wife, Caroline, while he was stationed at Camp Holly during the War of 1812. James discusses his opportunities for furlough and anticipated enemy troop activity. Other correspondence includes a letter from James to the Warren County Committee of Correspondence, discussing the tariff of 1827 and John Quincy Adams campaign for president. A few deeds and the will of James Hines are also present. Three documents concern John Hines and the purchasing and hiring of slaves, and their employment. Several letters (15) to and from John Henry Hines and his family, were written while he

2 was a Confederate Civil War prisoner at Johnson s Island, Ohio. John Henry discusses prison conditions, his disdain for the Yankees, possibilities of being released, and the need for provisions. An early letter vividly describes the Battle of Shiloh and war time conditions. Also included are correspondence and directives (8) for the Bowling Green Bank of Kentucky during the Civil War. These directives illustrate the difficulties of banking in Kentucky during those years. Other aspects of this collection include letters, documents, and invitations (32) of Edward Ludlow Hines, and a collection of steamboat inspection licenses belonging to John Porter Hines.
