The list continues to grow, and we are unable to know the status of those on the list. Many times the petitioned person will themselves ask that their names be removed, informing that they have long since healed and no longer require the prayers. To address this, our Parish will RENEW the bulletin Sick List, beginning with the bulletin of the May 5th & 6th weekend. This will reduce the large number of names, and allow for the list to be reorganized. If you wish a name to be added to the list, simply call the rectory at (516) 541-3270, or email the parish at ollmpk@aol.com. Thank you! Page 3 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish April 29, 2018 5th Sunday of Easter Father Edward Mazich, O.S.B. An appreciation for humor, irony, and laughter are authentic signs of a Christian, I believe, since we are only able to truly laugh to laugh with joy, not the nervous bluster of the arrogant or insecure because in Jesus Christ we see the definitive answer to the otherwise confounding inanity and tragedy that so often mark our world. The frustrations, sufferings, embarrassments, and missteps that leave many people who have no faith despondent can be seen by Christian believers as part of the irony of human existence. We have the chance to see a bit of divine humor in today s readings when Paul, having just made one of the most dramatic religious conversions in history, from Pharisaical Judaism to Christianity, struggles to find acceptance among his new Christian fellows. When Saul arrived in Jerusalem he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple (Acts 9:26). One can hardly blame those who shunned Paul s first inroads into the Church community; after all, till recently, he had been an energetic persecutor of these very same Christians. Still, his situation has something of a tragi-comic cast to it as he tries to meet and affirm new friends in Christ while they desperately flee from him. Some earnest intervention from Barnabas saved the day for Paul, and he eventually became a pillar of the early Christian Church. The humor we might find in Paul s plight in Jerusalem gives us a chance to reflect on coming into the Church and the way we are welcomed when we try to do so. Catholics are rightly proud of our home parishes and churches, our schools, our Altar Guilds, Men s Clubs, and our CYO leagues, all of which ought to remind us of the catholicity and universality of the Church. Yet we may have experienced less than an opened-armed welcome at one point or another when joining a new parish or a group within our parish. Catholics are famous for this sort of territoriality, which is very often built on lines of ethnic identity and which can be seen in the proliferation of small Catholic churches in an ethnically rich area like our own. A sure way to celebrate our rightful Catholic identity and to make sure that it does not become parochial or unwelcoming is to see to it that our identity is rooted first in Christ, the true vine (John 15:1) and then in the more particular cultural or regional expressions of our Christian identity. This proper ordering of values gives the Church its catholicity the unity in diversity that has been part and parcel of its existence from the earliest days and which continues to strengthen the Church today.

We will keep you informed in the bulletin of the different opportunities to care and share in memorializing and restoring items in the Grotto. Page 13 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish April 29, 2018 Sharing Our Gifts through the CMA As stewards, we choose to live our lives in thanksgiving to our generous God. Our actions and words - what we choose to do or not to do - are all examples of our gratitude. Christian stewards seek ways to share what we have been given. One very important vehicle for exercising our stewardship is the Catholic Ministries Appeal. The CMA allows us an opportunity to share our gifts in many different ways. Gift of Financial Resources: Of course, when we think of the Catholic Ministries Appeal, we think of sharing our financial resources. More than 600,000 of our sisters and brothers received support and assistance from the funds shared through the CMA each year. It is rare that just one person or one parish could touch this many lives. The CMA brings us beyond the individual, the group and the parish and unites us as one Church of Long Island. Gifts of Time and Talent: In addition to money, the CMA offers opportunities to share our time and talent. Parishes often form CMA committees to support a smooth and organized Appeal effort. Others share their gifts by volunteering in the ministries that the CMA supports. One of the great benefits of the Appeal is communication. People are informed of the many good works, programs and opportunities in this diocese. The CMA tells of the good works of the Church and communicates the opportunities to share our God-given gifts. Gift of Prayer: The Catholic Ministries Appeal brings us closer to those we help and support. We can become more connected with our sisters and brothers through prayer. We may wish to pray for those who support the Appeal, those who volunteer, those who receive support and even those who cannot participate for whatever reason. The Catholic Ministries Appeal is Stewardship in action! To make a donation, you can also visit CatholicMinistriesAppeal.org or call us at 516-678-5800 ext. 296 Thank You!

It offers a multidisciplinary team approach offering compassionate support, education and birthplanning services. Through the development of a birth plan, parents are able to determine the care they want for their baby and make decisions for their newborn prior to birth. An important component of the program is taking memory-building photos, footprints and handprints, reaffirming the precious life of this special infant. For more than a year after the child s birth, the team will remain in contact with the family to help bridge the feelings of loss, while validating the role of the parents. This program is open to all! For more information: https://www.chsli.org/pregnancy-support-services or call 855-301-4CHS. All calls are confidential.
