Dear Friends, March 4, 2018 The Third Sunday of Lent 5 The Sunday before Lent this year, I spoke to you about the annual Catholic Ministries Appeal and I m happy to say your response has started out well, in your usual way. Many of us will remember from our own religious education the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. Among the corporal works (those pertaining to the material needs of people) are feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the sick. These are particularly recommended in the Season of Lent. We carry out these works in concert with other parishes and the Diocese. This year, I ask you to remember that Saint Matthew s parish cannot, and does not stand alone in performing these works of mercy. As the spiritual works of mercy are performed in union with the whole Church throughout the world, so are the corporal works. The Catholic Ministries Appeal is the major way that our Diocesan community is attempting to meet the needs of our large and varied population. We cannot be aloof from the wider Church and I urge all of us to share in this appeal by our prayer and monetary gifts. The Diocese is not some thing out there. It is the concrete face and hands of Christ s Catholic Church in our two counties: its parishes, schools, Seminary, hospitals and organized charities. I have made my own contribution to the Appeal this Lent. Like you, I have to balance other needs. In my case, the paramount obligation I have, to care for my disabled sister, is to enable her to live independently and happily, as long as I am able, to provide for her needs, above any other aid she receives. Like many of you, I am aware of hard times ; yet there is something more that I can set aside for the support of the wider Church to which I belong. I am grateful to you for what you have done, and will continue to do, for the hungry, the naked, and the sick and those who need instruction, counseling, and admonishing. God s blessings, Father Hewes

March 4, 2018 The Third Sunday of Lent 6 A Note About Conversion And Reception Into The Catholic Church In recent years, this process has been under the designation of the Rite of the Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) with its various rites, stages, and ceremonies. It is a fact in this parish, the number of people actively involved in carrying out the RCIA program has diminished and the lifestyles and schedules of those inquiring about becoming Catholics has changed. This necessitates a reform in the way this program is ministered in the parish. The very first step for anyone, of whatever nature of interest in either becoming a Catholic or an already baptized adult interested in completing their Sacraments in the Catholic Church, is a phone call to either Father Sikorski or me to set up an interview, for an introduction and discussion of your interest and/or needs in this area. This will enable us to get to know you, your circumstances and to determine an appropriate length and nature of your instructions in the Catholic Faith. These can vary in depth and length, according each individual s circumstances and schedule. The priest will then be able to arrange the appropriate stages and ceremonies for the potential convert. It has always been a hallmark of conversion to the Catholic Faith that they meet, and develop a relationship with his or her pastor and parish priests. I am very grateful to Mrs. Marie Prinito and Mr. Robert Ruvio, who have borne the responsibility for this important work for many years. The work of introducing adults to the Catholic Faith or completing others initiation into the life of the Church continues and will benefit from this reform and renewal. If you would like to make a gift now using your IRA and if: You are at least 70 1/2 years old and don't exceed your maximum of $100,000 per year in qualified charitable distributions, you will not have to report your distribution as income. It will be free of federal and New York State income tax, and it will count toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). The best way to start is with your IRA custodian. Tell them you want to make a "qualified charitable distribution." In most cases, you will only have to fill out a simple form. Very important! Your gift must go directly from your IRA to the parish. If you receive the money first, you ll be taxed on it. If you make an Estate Gift, you can make your parish a beneficiary of your IRA and your loved ones will not have to pay income tax on their proceeds. 8

March 4, 2018 The Third Sunday of Lent 14 Respect Life News Spiritual Adoption Program MONTH SIX Developing Baby Your spiritually adopted baby is developing quite beautifully now. His/her weight is approaching 2 pounds. Babies born prematurely at this time have a very good chance of surviving. The medical advances in caring for extremely small newborn infants are extraordinary indeed. Justice O Connor has remarked that the Roe vs. Wade decision is on a collision course with itself. Each passing year, we witness medical advances that allow medical professionals to save younger and younger premature infants. PREGNANT? NEED HELP? Pastor Mark Reich said he prays for the athletes "protection, good, their best efforts and for everyone to go home saying, 'I did my best.'" The atheist Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) sent a letter of complaint to the school district in January. This anti-god group routinely attacks and threatens small towns and average Americans for exercising their First Amendment freedoms. (They even sued Presidents Obama and Bush over the National Day of Prayer, claiming they were offended by the proclamation. Fortunately, in this case, the appeals court concluded, "Hurt feelings differ from legal injury.") Nevertheless, each year, FFRF continue their dozens of complaints against schools and too often, the schools will capitulate rather than engage in a legal defense. West Branch Superintendent Saxton decided to stop the prayer while exploring a compromise. In the meantime, over 100 students and adults arrived at a recent game wearing "Prayer Matters" tee-shirts. "I was upset and outraged because our community is so close-knit and it's upsetting to see something that's important to so many people get taken down," said a West Branch graduate. (wkbn.com, 2/10/18; christianpost.com,2/11/18; aclj.org, 2015) "I believe we are allowed to express ourselves and it's our freedom guaranteed by the Constitution. I want the praying to continue." March 4, 2018 The Third Sunday of Lent 15 YES ~ SENIOR NEWS REMINDERS ~ UPCOMING EVENTS March 8 ~ Margaret Cuffaro from the Roslyn Bank will speak on fraud updates. We've touched on this subject before, but it seems that once one scam is discovered, there is another to take its place. You will be amazed to learn how many fall victim and lose a great deal of money because of these methods. It is sad to say, seniors are prime victims of their deceit and we must do everything we can to be one step ahead of their latest plans for us. Don't be the next victim. March 15 ~ Luncheon at Orlando's at 12:00 P.M. ~ No meeting. March 22 ~ We will be entertained with music by Bob Serrao and his one-man band. March 29 ~ Holy Thursday ~ No Meeting. It has become a tradition, here at St Matthew, for our children and grandchildren to bring their Easter baskets to church on the morning of Holy Saturday to be blessed. Father Sikorski conducts a lovely ceremony, blessing the contents of their baskets. This is not limited to the children. Adults are also encouraged to participate. I have seen many foods including hams, breads and even butter in the shape of the Pascal Lamb that will be on the Easter table. They also will be placed on the altar for blessing. This tradition was originated in Europe and many of us remember this custom from when we were children. Each year we have more participants than the year before. Come and join us at 10:30 A.M. in the Church, take photos and teach your young ones that Easter is the Resurrection of Christ, not just bunnies and colored eggs. Remember to pray for all who are ill and for their loving caregivers. Remember those who serve our Church and our country. God bless America! See you in Church. May Our Lady always be at your side. God bless. Terry Sbashnig, President Feed the Poor Ministry On the third Saturday of every month, immediately following the 9 o clock Mass, in the kitchen in Monsignor Goggin Hall here at St. Matthew, a group of people get together and make a difference in the lives of some very needy people. Some of them bring wrapped sandwiches they have made at home; some bring individual bags of chips, homemade goods, or 12 packs of canned soda. Some drop off packaged cookies, or napkins, or even toiletries like mini shampoos, mouthwash, etc. Tons of clothes are donated. For over fifteen years, this merry band of volunteers has wrapped up all the generosity of this parish each and every third Saturday and has taken it to the men at the Bellevue Men s Shelter on First Avenue and Twenty-ninth Street, next to Bellevue Hospital. How would you like to join us? Sometimes writing a check to your favorite charity doesn t cut it. Sometimes you want to get involved and express your desire to help the poor. You don t even have to go to the city with us. A commitment equal to your wishes could be fulfilled in this group s effort and here s how you can help. Make a few wrapped sandwiches of beef baloney and cheese or peanut butter and jelly. Bring the food, etc., to the kitchen before Mass, if possible, but we must have all at about 9 o clock. Our usual departure is about 10 o clock and usually we get back before 2 o clock. Remember, you can buy chips, puddings, soda, cereal bars during your monthly run to COSTCO and flag it for the homeless. Your help or donation lights up the lives of these marginalized folks. Be inspired by the kindness and generosity of our parish and join us in this way to lighten the sting of poverty and homelessness. There is a place for you in this ministry. For information call Frank Harnos 631-499-0074 or Judy Maddaloni 631-242-2183.
