May 2018 For now there are faith, hope, and love. But of these three, the greatest is love. I Corinthians 13:13 CEV Now that spring has finally descended upon Franklin County, I m starting to see an old friend. The eastern redbud tree. The eastern redbud is the tree with the delicate purple flowers (some would say dark pink) that grows as an understory in the forest. This time of year, their wonderfully rich color is easy to spot on mountain roads. But the redbud is also a favorite flowering tree of Pennsylvania lawns. It blossoms after the weeping cherry and before the dogwood. I grew partial to the redbud because it was a favorite tree of my grandfather. He had one in his front yard and absolutely celebrated its return every spring. I m also a huge fan of purple/lavender/magenta so naturally the redbud made my list of favorites early on. But what I really appreciate about this tree is its unique foliage. The leaves are hearts! It s as if all summer long God puts this tree in our midst to remind us that we are loved. I know a young woman who is struggling with several viruses that have invaded her body at the same time. She s pretty sick and she asked me, as a friend, if I would pray over her. I anointed her about a month ago and texted her last week to check on her progress. She hasn t seen any improvement in her condition and said to me, I worry that God doesn t care about me. My friend isn t the only one who feels this way. Maybe you ve worried about that too. At some point or another, we all look for some assurance that we are worthy of God s love. It boggles my mind that this little tree bears the universal symbol of love. I think of those leaves often and know that God is telling me something.

Joel Ali Toms has been chosen to serve on staff as an intern in Student Ministries at the King Street United Brethren in Christ Church for the summer of 2018. This internship is an opportunity for Ali to further discern her call to ministry and gain valuable experience. Due to the nature of the internship, Ali will worship Sunday mornings at the King Street Church for the summer. Beginning in the fall of 2018, Ali will be serving an 8-month internship at the 4th Street Church of the Brethren to fulfill the requirements for her seminary studies. This is an exciting time of exploration for Ali, and we wish her well in her internship experiences. New Member Sunday We are going to receive new members on Sunday morning, June 17. If you would like to become part of our family through baptism, transfer and/or affirmation of faith please speak with our pastor asap. Thank you.

SMART COOKIES NURSERY SCHOOL APRIL 2018 April has been a very exciting month at Nursery School. We are learning about plants, butterflies, and many other cool things. Mrs. Amy purchased some caterpillars for the classroom, and we have watched them grow and form their chrysalides. We are now all anxiously awaiting for the chrysalides to open and for our butterflies to emerge. We are also learning about plants and how they grow. We have been watching a sweet potato sprout and what plants need to grow. On Friday, April 20 th, we took a trip to Voila Children s Art and Creativity Center. We had a fun time making a bank, an Earth Day craft, playing outside on a pirate ship, playing with playdoh, and painting with water colors. We had so much fun! On April 27 th, we are planning for Bring a Friend Day. We can t wait to see what fun activities we will be doing.
