First Presbyterian Church PresbyNews February, 2018 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Friends, We have made it through January with its cold & snow followed by sunny and warm days. Unfortunately, the uncertain weather pattern is likely to continue into February stretching winter too far into the New Year for most of us. I m one who always searches for signs of spring but those clues are scarce. When I drive past garden centers I look closely for potted plants on the For Sale racks. None yet, drat it! But the day will come when we can load up with flowers and various garden plants. May it be soon! One sign of the threshold of spring is the arrival of Lent. This year, Ash Wednesday is on February 14 also known as Valentine s Day. We will hold our Ash Wednesday service in the Session House this year. We hope you will be able to join us. Tuesday, February 13, which our friends in Louisiana call Fat Tuesday, is known as Shrove Tuesday in the church. It is the last day of Shrovetide, the seventeen days before Lent when early Christians focused on self-examination to become ready to enter into solemn contemplation. Fat or Shrove, that Tuesday is still set aside for indulgences before the austere and penitential season of Lent begins. Fasting and prayer become the order soon afterwards. The ways that many churches indulge themselves on Shrove Tuesday is to have a pancake supper, thus scouring their pantries of fat and flour and delicacies. FPC will hold its own Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on Tuesday, February 13, at 5:30 p.m. sponsored by the Fellowship Ministry. The purpose of this meal is simple: to indulge ourselves together. In this way we will delay the self-denial of Lent as long as we can. As we lead up to all this, be in prayer for the planners in the church as they craft a budget for the coming year a budget that utilizes the gifts of members and friends for the benefit of our ministry in Cheraw. Grace and peace be with you! Alan Arnold
