Faith F N amily ews Faith Presbyterian Church Monthly Newsletter Pastor s Ponderings Now that summer vacation days are completed, schools are back in session, our choir is rested and ready, and the privilege and gift from God to worship, serve, evangelize, and fellowship together in this new 2017-2018 year is before us, on Sunday, 10 September Faith Presbyterian Church of San Diego is celebrating and inviting friends and neighbors to join us with a RALLY DAY! We proclaim top and centered each week in the worship bulletin that we are A family of Christ, welcoming all, worshiping God, growing in the Spirit and joyously serving others. On Rally Day we will be called to renew our awareness of and commitment to our Lord and one another. We will be reminded of who we are and Whose we are. As the Apostle Paul taught in 1 Cor 12, we are connected to one another in relationships, gifting and mission: 12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body Jews or Greeks, slaves or free and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. 14 Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot would say, Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body, that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear would say, Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body, that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. We will have ministry leaders ready to share more with you about the many ways the Lord is known, served and glorified, inviting you to prayerfully consider and sense the nudge of the Spirit toward your vital participation this next year. Our ministries are many and diverse, but are incomplete without the full participation of all of our gifted and loved members! These ministry areas include college outreach, congregational life, faith development & nurture, finance, memorial, mission, nominating, personnel, property, facilities, information technology, stewardship, worship & arts, communion, community service, flowers, home worship, labor of love, memorial service, prayer chain, prayer quilt, prison, and visitation. I was inspired during VBS by an enthusiastic little 4-year-old boy named Elijah, a natural born leader and motivator. During the opening session in the sanctuary each morning, as Emilia was giving the go signal to Janet controlling the sound in the balcony, Elijah would pop up from his front pew seat among his fellow 4 year olds, clap his hands and look up toward Janet and speak out with excitement toward her and whoever was around him to hear, O.K., we re ready now ready for the music and to sing c mon guys, let s go! God kindled my passion afresh for participation and service in the Body of Christ through this precious little disciple of the Lord! No matter our age or stage in life, we are ever called to committed participation in our walk of faith. As we RALLY into this year by God s grace and mercy, let us inspire and encourage one another in a core trait of love: 4 Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. 7 It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends. 1 Cor13 Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? Isa. 43:18-19 Faithfully, Yours in Christ, Pastor Gary SEPTEMBER 2017 Volume XXIII Number 9

Vacation Bible School 2017 At this year s Creator s Workshop Vacation Bible School, kids learned that God created them so that we can be creators with him! We all had a great time singing, playing, learning, and creating. Thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers that made VBS happen! -2-

All Things Mission Study Committee DISCOVERING YOUR CHURCH S NEXT STEP by Joe Huffaker Mark your calendars for a special time of discernment and lunch on Saturday, September 9th! Dr. Neal Nybo will lead us through his seminar, Discovering Your Church s Next Step. This will be held at the Church, from 8:30 until 1:00, with lunch included. There will be no cost. Expect a great time of fellowship and discovery as we discuss what makes Faith Presbyterian Church unique. The process is very interactive, with time spent as in a single group, many smaller groups, and individual work. As Dr. Nybo describes it, The activity moves back and forth from individual thought time to table discussions to whole group interactions. People write their own answers then tables come to a consensus then all answers are posted on a wall. Participants, facilitators or leaders, find natural groupings or patterns of answers. For example, there could be several answers related to serving in leadership and several about recent programs or initiatives. There may be answers related to activities far in the past. All these are helpful. These groupings become the answers on which participants will focus. The same process of synthesis is repeated for each of the reflection questions. Everyone is involved. All are heard. Along the way, we ll see our discussions coalesce into areas we value and want to hold on to, what should be given up, and what should improve. We ll have wonderful insight into ourselves as a body of Christ. The Study Committee seeks your participation. The more voices that are heard, the more focused our consensus will be. The outcomes of this seminar will inform our search for our next pastor, as well as how we move forward and engage each other as fellow congregants and how we engage our community. Please sign up after Service, or email Joe Huffaker at jwhuffaker@cox.net by Wednesday, Sept 6th with your name and number attending. SPECIAL OFFERING: PEACE & GLOBAL WITNESS WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY - OCTOBER 1, 2017 When we celebrate World Communion Sunday, we are reminded of our oneness as a world community. The Special Offering for Peace and Global Witness on this day of international communion follows the four Sundays of September designated by Presbyterians as the Season of Peace. Our Sunday worship bulletins during September will describe some of the ongoing efforts of programs that promote peace and justice for all. Our congregation will be designating our 25% share of this offering to continue our financial and prayerful support of the San Diego Family Justice Center, 1122 Broadway, San Diego 92101, 619-533-6000. FAITH WOMEN S CIRCLE By Carla Euliss If you were to walk into a meeting of Women s Circle at Faith, you might notice some interesting objects in the middle of the table. There is a globe shaped piggy bank, for receiving our pennies for the Least Coin Offering, which goes to help mission causes around the world; and a pig-shaped piggy bank, for receiving quarters and dimes for an annual donation to Heifer Project. A great way to get rid of extra change! These items will be in use again when Women s Circle resumes meeting in September on our usual meeting day, the second Thursday of the month. Women s Circle is a warm fellowship built around a Bible Study which is provided each year by Horizons, the magazine for Presbyterian Women. This year the study is Cloud of Witnesses: The Community of Christ in Hebrews. We will be digging into the Word and sharing what we are learning and how God is working in our lives. If you would like to join us in this adventure, we would love to see you there on Thursday, September 14, at 11:00 in Room 3. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! What? IT ISN T YOUR BIRTHDAY? THAT S THE PROBLEM We don t really know when people at Faith have a birthday unless it s one of those special milestones where family arranges for cake. Many people have indicated they would love to be able to wish friends a happy birthday, but they don t have any idea what the date is. Maybe we can help with that. Each month we would like to put a list in the newsletter of our members celebrating a birthday during that month (name, month, and day only -- no year, please). If you are interested in partici pating in this project of wishing people well, please give our editor Joe Rodriguez your name, month and date of your birthday. This is, of course, voluntary, but several people have requested that we look into doing this, so we would like to give it a try. We will need your information by the monthly newsletter deadline. You can send it to Joe and he will develop a file for each month. There are lots of opportunities to practice happy birthdays and maybe even sing one or two. Let s give it a try and see what happens. A NEW ADULT EDUCATION CLASS COMING!! FILM AT ELEVEN It s back! Film at Eleven led by Dick Rupperr will recommence on September 10th in Room 1 at 11am! We ll begin with The Foundations of Western Civilization, featuring Professor Thomas F. Noble of the University of Notre Dame, one of the Great Courses video series. We ll take breaks for all-church events, Advent, and Lent. Each lecture of the series is about ½ hour, and the plan is to cover two lectures each Sunday. - 7 -

WE RE WE RE BACK The Choir and Handbells Return in September First Rehearsal Thursday Evening, September 7th at 7:00pm First Sunday in Worship, September 10th, Warmup at 8:45am If you have ever thought about singing with us, September would be a good time to give it a try. Besides our regular Sunday music, we will begin working on our Christmas music. Since I am promoting the choir, I might as well mention that we need a couple more handbell ringers in our handbell ensemble. If you are interested in either choir, please contact me. I will be happy to talk with you about it. Joe Rodriguez, Director of Music Ministry Meet Kim Stiles Our Newest Choir Member Kim Stiles was born in Plymouth, MA. Growing up there, she attended a Baptist church and a non-denominational church where she sang in the choir. When she was 14, her parents bought Kim her first horse and she became interested in showing horses. At age 16 her family moved to Arizona, then to California when she was 17. Throughout the next 36 years, Kim had three more horses and continued to show them. Kim attended Southwestern Community College from 1983-1984 and sang in the school chorus. In 1984 she dropped out of college when she began working for the US Government. She was a budget analyst for the Navy until retirement in 2005. At that time Kim decided to finish what she had started in 1983 and returned to college. She earned bachelor degrees in History and American Indian Studies from San Diego State University and now is working on her master s degree in History. Here is Kim s response to the question, why did you choose Faith Presbyterian Church. I have attended a few churches in San Diego but I never felt like I fit in. However, from the first Sunday that I attended Faith Presbyterian Church, I have felt welcomed. I am enjoying singing in the choir and want to become a member of the church. I want to thank everyone for making me feel welcomed. I have finally found the church that I ve been looking for! - 11 -
