DUKE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL Service of Worship Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost July 27, 2008 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God A mustard tree. Photographer unknown. The promises of God are often fulfilled in unexpected ways. In Genesis, Jacob is tricked by his father-in-law into 14 years of slavery in order to marry Laban s daughter. Out of this difficult family dynamic emerges the promises of the covenant people. The passage from Romans powerfully reminds readers that God s love is present even in the midst of tribulation, and that his purposes are being furthered, even if outward appearances would indicate otherwise. In Matthew, Jesus likens the kingdom of God to a mustard seed or yeast, they may have small beginnings but can grow into something much larger. Similarly, the pearl of great price shows that the kingdom may be costly, but it is worth the sacrifice.

DUKE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL Duke Chapel is a grand building, suitable for hosting major events in the life of the University and its members; it acts as a moderator for the diversity of religious identity and expression on campus; and it is a Christian church of an unusually interdenominational character, with a tradition of stirring music, preaching, and liturgy. We welcome you to our life of worship, learning, dialogue, and service. www.chapel.duke.edu Box 90974, Durham, NC 27708 919-684-2572 FOR WORSHIPERS & VISITORS Prayer requests may be placed in the prayer box located by the Memorial Chapel.
