We thank You for everything and ask to put You first when trying to understand heavenly facts beyond our human weaknesses The book of Revelation - Revelation means revealing the divine mysteries to mankind. - Writer of the book is St John the beloved exiled and saw visions in Patmos (Turkey) - It is a very difficult, symbolic book to understand. It is the only prophetic book of the new testament, heavenly facts beyond human understanding... numbers, symbols, colours, and similes. - Many views and opinions, only my personal preferred views are mentioned Chapter 1 7 golden lamp stands lamp stands represent light, the people around Christ receive light from the bridegroom. 7 indicates perfection, repeated 54 times 7 everything It is "golden" because it is heavenly, and because of its purity garment down to the foot symbolises garment of priesthood, aiming to save everybody golden band around the chest - indicates the gathering of the people around the bosom of God where they feed on both testaments his head and his hair were white as snow refers to saints who are as the hair of the Lord his eyes like a flame of fire Christ is always awake, also refer to the power of his divine word as they dispense darkness His feet were like fine brass as if refined in a furnace one view indicates the Lord's manhood burning with divinity Mystery of the seven stars - are the seven angels or church bishops Out of his mouth went a sharp two edged sword Christ appears as a warrior with His strong words. His countenance was like the sun shining in the strength like the Lord is unapproachable light (1 Tim 6:16) Chapter 2 and 3 7 churches all have strengths, weaknesses, and advice The Lord says I know your works to all 7 churches He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches" to all 7 churches See Appendix Chapter 4 A throne in heaven and One sat on the throne Lightning, thundering and voices coming out of the throne lightening refers to the amazement people see from preacher s life Thunder refers to the work of the Holy spirit which smashes his pride Daniel Ayad s blog on Coptic Orthodoxy Page 1

Voices refer to tenderness, love of God Sea glass of crystal in front of the throne sea points to baptism, crystal is like the colours of spectrum and gives rise to the baptized many different virtues and gifts. 4 living creatures each has 6 wings 1. A lion 2. A Calf 3. A Human Image 4. An eagle The Human signify the incarnation of Christ The Calf signify the sacrifice of Christ on the cross The lion is seen as a symbol of the resurrection And the Eagle resembles the ascension of Christ to heaven....another view; Another interpretation of these 4 incorporeal creatures is that they are the four evangelists Matthew (man), Mark (lion), Luke (calf) and John (eagle). And it s as if these four evangelists are offering Christ for us. The four living creatures say Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God Almighty 24 presbyters (priestly work), white robes, crowns of gold on their heads.. 12 for Old Testament + 12 for New Testament St John saw at the feat of the throne Seven Lamps of fire and the church fathers interpret this as meaning that the Holy Spirit is present in all of the seven sacraments. Chapter 5 A scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals. Christ can only worthy to open the scroll, he has these characteristics: 1- Lion one view is that shows His reign, His firmness and trust in Him. The opposite is the lion of the devil that deceives. 2- Of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David he created David, and became His son in the body 3- Lamb slain lamb of sacrifice 4- Having seven horns (lamb) represent power 5- Having seven eyes (lamb) seven Spirits of God sent to all the earth Daniel Ayad s blog on Coptic Orthodoxy Page 2

Chapter 6 the seven seals 1 st seal: This horse is symbolic of the prophets and disciples who carried the good news who is Christ the one holding the bow and arrow because he aims the good news at your heart. White is a pleasant colour -> happiness in Christ 2 nd seal: This seal is symbolic of the persecution era in the church. Further it tells us that Christianity was spread by the sword of faith of these martyrs. 3 rd seal: The third horse he saw was black and the horseman was holding a scale. This horse points out to everyone the appearance of heresy and the spread of famine and hardships. 4 th seal: one view is the angel of death who attempts to kill every soul with God. 5 th seal: souls of the martyrs... they are in paradise waiting for the just judgement of God 6 th seal cosmic disturbances Great earthquake the Lord will come in noticed Sun darkened according to Bishoy Marcus Christ is light (sun) and it becomes black because of His teachings have become unclear and mistaken by many people. Moon red - symbolic of the church has become red with blood. Moon (church) reflects light from the sun (Christ) Stars falling one view is the heretics of the church. E.g. Nestorius Chapter 7 St John saw the 144000 (12000 from each 12 tribes of Israel) elect in heaven and these are the children of God. This is a symbolic number, not literal like the Jehovah s Witness say. We can discuss the mathematics behind this later. Each tribe has spiritual characteristics. Chapter 8 Symbolic 30mins 7 th seal: prelude to the seven trumpets Basically 7 angels were given 7 trumpets Also another angel having a golden censor offers incense 7 trumpets 1 st trumpet vegetation struck Angel sounds and hail and fire, mingled with blood were thrown to the earth. -> 1/3 of the trees were burned up and all green grass burned up. Daniel Ayad s blog on Coptic Orthodoxy Page 3

The trees symbolise the strong believers with good foundation, but 1/3 are arrogant and haughty The grass has no foundation and will all be burnt 2 nd trumpet seas struck Angel sounds and something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea, and a 1/3 of the sea became blood. A view is that sea is the world and the mountain represents the fall of a high person (leader) and takes 1/3 of the world with him 3 rd trumpet the waters struck When the third angel sounded a great star fell from heaven burning like a torch and again it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water This star is called Wormwood and means something unpleasant. A great star is somebody with great religious and spiritual positions who falls. E.g. Heretics Arius, Nestorius 4 th trumpet the heavens struck The fourth angel sounds and a 1/3 of the sun was struck, 1/3 moon was struck and a 1/3 of the stars Church will be darkened Chapter 9 5 th trumpet the locusts from the bottomless pit Then the fifth angel sounded: And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So the sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit. Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth (Rev 9:1-3) Satanic related he has limits. He has no dominion on the believers, those with the seals. Those without the seals are tortured without being killed; therefore Satan does not have authority to kill, but torment. The locusts have defining features such as tails like scorpions to sting the unsealed. They fight and deceive, look pretty, have strong armors, and are deadly. 6 th trumpet appearance of the antichrist Two million army of horsemen released by the sixth angel. These horsemen are described as having breast plates of fiery red, blue and yellow and out of their mouth came fire, smoke and brimstone. Know these soldiers wiped a third of mankind with these three weapons. Daniel Ayad s blog on Coptic Orthodoxy Page 4

Chapter 10 Mighty angel descending from heaven, with a rainbow on his head, his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire. He had a little book open in his hand, and he set his right foot on the sea and his left on the land. He is Jesus Christ Rainbow is reconciliation Sun. Refer Feet demolish obstacles Little book open open for those willing to come to Him. It is little book, for the judgment day is near, and only a few prophecies remain unrealized yet. The believers will endure only for a short time. Right foot on sea, left foot on land the universe is His, not the devils or the Antichrist. Clarifications for first half 1. The four living creatures are not directly mentioned as the cherubim or the seraphim 2. The scale in the 3 rd seal refers to weighing grain and selling for exorbitant (extreme) prices, = great spiritual famine for Scripture 3. The silence for 30mins could refer to a time period, and as 1 day = 1 year, 30 mins is 7.5 days for His second coming 4. Events are symbolic, not necessarily literal, but have a common factual theme... it will happen to a similar extent. We thank you for everything... please guide us and open our eyes that we may see wondrous things from your law Chapter 11 After this St John was given a rod by an angel and he was told to measure three things 1. The temple of God 2. the altar 3. The people who worship there. A rod is used because back then there was no meter to measure length Temple - of God refers to believers Altar - refers to the giving and sacrifices which the believers perform People who worship there believers repentance and submission to Christ A priest measures (the rod) how each individual is travelling spiritually. Two witnesses Elijah and Enoch who both were taken up alive. Church fathers agree that these are the two witnesses. (Mal 4:5-6, Gen 45:2) Daniel Ayad s blog on Coptic Orthodoxy Page 5

Characteristics of the two witnesses; Olive trees - refer to peace-makers. Noah s dove came back with an olive branch, Palm Sunday Two lamp stands lamp stands lit by oil which symbolises the Holy Spirit Will die for 3.5 days and rise again 7 th trumpet the kingdom proclaimed, the temple of God was opened in heaven Chapter 12 Woman the church, also Saint Mary Moon under her feet church being transfigured with heavenly glory, which surpasses the moon Woman clothed with sun Christ (Son of righteousness) 12 stars 12 apostles who established the church Dragon Red murderer from the beginning 7 heads constantly thinking how to win 10 horns all available power Archangel Michael defeats the dragon and his angels were cast out with him The dragon persecutes the women (church). But God gave the church two wings to fly like an eagle to show the power of the church The dragon (serpent) does not give up his persecution. Spew s water out of his mouth like a flood after the woman that he might cause her to be carried away by the flood Again God helps His children; the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed up the flood Note The dragon tries to look the father The first beast (Antichrist) tries to look like the Son The second beast (false prophet) tries to look like the Holy Spirit All are the devil in an impure trinity Chapter 13 Dragon as before 1 st beast out of the sea (Antichrist) 7 heads, 10 horns and 10 crowns on these horns, same description as the dragon like a leopard fast feet like a bear - his feet are strong and harsh mouth like a lion armed, ready for ferocity Daniel Ayad s blog on Coptic Orthodoxy Page 6

recovered from a deadly wound all the world marvelled and worshipped the beast 2 nd beast out of the earth (false prophet) two horns performs great signs- makes fire come down from heaven encourages those on earth to make an image of the beast who was wounded and lived causes many to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads one view is unable to make the sign of the cross with right hands on their foreheads Number of the beast 666 many views - it is not our job to prophesy Chapter 14 The lamb and the 144000 virgins The 144000 virgins were singing a new song before the throne praising God, only they could learn the song as they were really pure Proclamations of 3 angels 1 st angel speaks about glory prepared for those who worship the Lord, which is eternal life. Also viewed as the angel Elijah 2 nd angel speaks about the destruction of the kingdom of the Antichrist. Also viewed as the angel Enoch 3 rd angel suffering prepared for the Antichrist and his followers eternal torment of fire Chapter 15 Prelude to the 7 Bowls 7 angels with the 7 plagues Standing on the sea of glass mixed with fire sea glass refers to baptism. Need it to avoid plagues Bright linen pure Chests with golden bands ready for service Chapter 16 7 Bowls The 7 bowls are related to the plagues which happened in Egypt. The 7 bowls are more severe than the 7 trumpets 1 st bowl: A loathsome sore came upon the men who had the mark of the beast.-- signifying the physical pain of sin or even more pain due to sin for example AIDS and herpes. Realise this only comes to those with a mark of 666. Daniel Ayad s blog on Coptic Orthodoxy Page 7

2 nd Bowl: Blood like a dead man and every living creature in the sea died. This signifies the countless wars which will wipe out many and this is one of the signs of the second coming. 3 rd Bowl: the rivers and oceans turned to blood This signifies the fact people who drank from the spring of life but later on deviated. They later preach the wrong message turning there springs to blood. 4 th bowl: the sun was given the power to scorch the people on the Earth and men started blaspheming against God. For example A pastor who stumbles those around him 5 th bowl: this plague is against the antichrist himself-----his kingdom becomes spiritually and ethically dark. Men will become confused against whom he is but instead of repenting they will blaspheme against God. 6 th bowl: The Euphrates River is dried up and three Satan spirits will try and convert many to become his followers. They are symbolically frogs live in muddy places and therefore have unclean desires. 7 th bowl: When the angel poured out of his bowl this time a loud voice came from heaven saying it is done. After this earthquake will occur and the great city Jerusalem will be divide into three parts because the antichrist will dwell there. Great Hail from heaven upon men -> blaspheming God. Chapter 17 Babylon it is just an expression to reveal the state of hostility against God, one way or the other, without looking into details or conditions. See a woman sitting on a scarlet beast Satan inside her on Satan Woman arrayed in purple and scarlet shedding of blood adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls artificial beauty In her hand a cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication On her forehead was written proud of her sin 7 heads and ten horns Chapter 18 The fall of Babylon the Great The world mourns Babylon s fall Finality of Babylon s fall Daniel Ayad s blog on Coptic Orthodoxy Page 8

Chapter 19 White horse symbolic of Christ s victory, eternal marriage. Many crowns king of kings, triumphant and victorious over the antichrist and his followers. Sword refer Clothed with a robe dipped in blood cross, suffering + the church which is purified by the Groom s blood. Armies, clothed in fine linen in heaven followed Him on white horse Thigh King of Kings and Lord of Lords = authority Beast and false prophet cast into the lake of fire Chapter 20 Angel with this chain bounds Satan and locks him up for a thousand years. Chain = authority + dominion over Satan, limited power when we turn to Christ 1000 years the church is currently in this 1000 years when Satan is bound, but working...therefore he will be released and cause even greater damage. Dragon thrown into the lake of fire, everlasting torment... the devil cannot be saved Lord on a white throne indication of peace, no more fighting or defending because the whole church has become safe with Satan thrown into the lake of fire No more sword in His mouth, no appearance of a horseman, nor lion but sitting on the throne peacefully and granting the victorious a share in the heavenly glories. Books are opened, judged according to works lake of fire or... Chapter 21 The state of the one church, new Jerusalem, HEAVEN God will wipe away every tear from their eyes There shall be no more death Nor sorrow, nor crying; and there shall be no more pain Then He who sat on the throne said, Behold I make all things new there will be no boredom, tiredness. Nothing will become old or aging, but every moment we will find all things new. We will always be the more eager for... Him Universal apostolic church, heavenly city She had a great and high wall universal gathering Three gates north, south, east and west Each individual gate was of one pearl Christ is The pearl Daniel Ayad s blog on Coptic Orthodoxy Page 9

12 foundations 12 precious stones. E.g. Jasper, sapphire, chalcedony, emerald... 1 st : 12 precious stones are indicative of the apostles of Christ 2 nd : The street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass 3 rd : No temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the lamb are its temple. 4 th : No need of the sun or of the moon to shine, for the glory of God has illuminated it, and the Lamb is its light 5 th : Total glory nothing evil Chapter 22 The river of life symbolism of Christ who gave water to every soul. There are other views. The tree of life most views symbolise the cross i.e. somebody extending their hands to pick all kinds of pleasant fruits. Permanent Joy no more curse... therefore no sin = joy Permanent Light no night exists, no need of a lamp, nor light of the sun for the Lord God gives them light Pure gold as we mentioned previously Keep the words of this book. Worship God. Get ready for judgement by obeying His commandments. God warns how easily he can remove you from the book of life... Amen. Even so, come.
