The Lord s Supper Four Looks 1
1 Cor. 11:23-26 2 [23] For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: [24] And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me
3 [25] After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. [26] For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
Acts 20:7 4 [7] And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
5 We need to give attention to observing the Lord s Supper
6 I. Look Backward
The Lord s Supper is a memorial 7
Lk. 22:19-20 On the night He 8 was betrayed [19] And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. [20] Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
9 We are to remember the sacrifice Jesus made We remember the death of Jesus
1 Cor. 11:26 10 [26] For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
11 II. Look Inward
1 Cor. 11:28 12 [28] But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
13 We do not examine ourselves to see if we are worthy but to make sure we partake in the right manner We must get in the right frame of mind
14 Am I eating the Lord s Supper to continue the memory of Christ s suffering? Am I thankful for what he did for me?
15 Do I bring glory to him in eating by living as I live? His sacrifice the church the unity we have in Christ -
1 Cor. 10:16-17 16 [16] The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? [17] For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.
17 III. Look Upward
18 The Lord s Supper is worship of God and Jesus as God s Son.
Jn. 3:16 Love sent Jesus to the earth [16] For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 19
Jn. 15:13 20 [13] Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
21 His sinless life made him the perfect sacrifice for us 2 Cor. 5:21 [21] For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
1 Jn. 3:5 22 [5] And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
23 IV. Look Forward
24 The Lord s Supper also points to the future
1 Cor. 11:26 25 [26] For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
26 In the Lord s Supper we are reminded that Jesus is coming again!
Acts 1:10-11 27 [10] And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; [11] Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
Jn. 14:1-3 28 [1] Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. [2] In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
29 [3] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
1 Thess. 4:13-18 30 [13] But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. [14] For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
31 [15] For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. [16] For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
32 [17] Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. [18] Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
33 We have looked: Backward Inward Upward Forward
