Page Two Madison Jewish Center MESSAGE ARTICLE APRIL 2017 Rabbi Shae J. Kane D.D. IN PREPARATION FOR PASSOVER The search for hametz is performed the evening before Passover this year on Sunday evening April 9, 2017 by the light of a candle (traditionally) or a flashlight. Before the search begins, distribute token pieces of bread around the house so that the search is successful. (Some wrap the pieces of bread to prevent inadvertent spilling of crumbs.) Brush any hametz found into a wooden spoon using a feather. (Alternatively, collect any wrapped hametz.) The associated b rachah and nullification formula appear at the beginning of the haggadah. 1. Recite the b rachah. 2. Search the darkened rooms by the light of the candle or flashlight. 3. Collect all token pieces of bread and any hametz not designated for sale or consumption in the morning. Hametz may not be eaten after 10:44am Monday April 10, 2017. 4. Recite the night (first) formula for nullification of hametz in a language you understand. 5. Set aside the hametz you found until the morning. Bi ur hametz the destruction of and the burning of hametz. We are not allowed to possess hametz after 11:51am Monday April 10, 2017 any remaining hametz in your possession must be destroyed (hametz that has been designated for sale should have been sold before 11:51am on Monday.) The associated nullification formula appears at the beginning of the Haggadah. 1. Do not recite a b rachah. 2. Destroy, traditionally done by burning, the remaining hametz including the hametz found in the search the previous night. 3. Immediately afterward, recite the morning formula for the nullification of hametz in a language you understand. From my family to your families a zesin kasher Pesah!!!

madisonjc.org Page Three President s Message April 2017 Greetings everyone. Looking back a moment at March we remember Sisterhood s Torah Fund Brunch, our Shabbat Across America dinner with our MJC Youth Chorus and our Purim festivities featuring a children s carnival and dancing for the adults. It was wonderful to see all the children and adults dressed in costume. We all listened attentively to Cantor Rimer chanting the M gillah. April is dominated by thoughts of Pesach and the gathering of family and friends for our Seders. As always, I will hook you up with a family Seder if you would like. Just call me at 718 309-9122 if you re interested. Make reservations now for our trip to the Museum of Jewish Heritage on Sunday, April 30. Our morning minyanim continue but we sometimes do not have a full complement of at least 10. Each of you can help. I would like to thank our members who regularly attend. Often a person can say Kaddish because we are here. Attending almost always are Rabbi Kane, Marlene and Paul Podell, Ilene Karpas, Marvin Pereira, Michael Sosin, Monique and Richard Ander, and myself. Stephen Epstein comes almost every Thursday. Linda Bell, Steve Bell and Cecile Kops can usually attend if we need a tenth. Ellen and Norman Green, Cantor Rimer and Steve Bell often attend Sundays. Keith Sevransky, Dennies Gajadhar, Burt Bell, David Abels and Burt Siegel come occasionally. If I left you out please let me know. Perhaps you can add your name to this list if you are retired and have the time. It s always good to start the day bright and early. In case you don t know, our long time members Diane and Greg Posniak have moved to Arizona. We will miss their steady presence at Shabbat services, at all meetings, at social events and in the choir. Greg is a past president who lent a dignified and professional manner to the position. This month s spotlight falls on Madison Jewish Center. Most of this history was compiled by past president Dan Bernstein for whom the middle classroom is named. In 1931, 25 families rented a small store on Nostrand Avenue. Starting as a Modern Orthodox congregation Madison Jewish Center joined the Conservative Movement a few years later. A new synagogue was constructed in 1933 with its first spiritual leader, Rabbi Mordicai Simcke engaged in 1935. By 1942 about 150 families were affiliated with MJC. A cantor was hired and a volunteer choir added dignity and musical beauty to the services. During World War II the center s doors were open at all hours to serve the needs of the community. By 1949, with a membership of over 200 families and a school with 250 students, a new sanctuary was planned and a cornerstone laid in 1951. 1952 saw the beginning of Rabbi Joshua Lindenberg s leadership here. Cantor Leslie Rimer was hired in 1974 and has been here ever since. Following Rabbi Lindenberg s retirement in 1979 the Center had a succession of Rabbis with Rabbi Roff, who preceded our present Rabbi, Rabbi Shae Kane, being particularly loved. In 1997 Rabbi Roff suffered a massive heart attack. Over 300 congregants and local politicians attended the funeral in our main sanctuary. Rabbi Kane has been our Rabbi since that time. In 1997 MJC elected its first woman President, Linda Bell, who paved the way for future female presidents. We have been completely egalitarian for many years now. Women are counted in the minyanim, are called up to the Torah, can be a Gabbai and even read from the Torah. The twenty-first century has seen a decline in Conservative Judaism in our area but the spirit and strength of MJC continues to be strong. Shalom.

On Saturday night March 11 th Sisterhood participated in the annual Purim party with hamentaschen, a children s carnival and music and food for the adults. There was something for everyone and a fun evening. On March 20 th we had a Craft Night with Babs Dobbs, making Miriam s Cups to set upon our seder tables this month. We learned about the history and role of Miriam the Prophetess in the Exodus. We sampled Passover snacks and refreshments in preparation for the upcoming holiday. This month there will be a board meeting on April 24 th,, which will primarily be devoted to preparation for the upcoming FASHION SHOW on May 18 th. Reservations for all activities can be made through our email address (info@madisonjc.org). Have a wonderful and happy Pesah. Ilene Karpas

madisonjc.org Page Seven Shalom Parents, I can t believe how fast this school year has flown by. Purim is over and everyone looked so good in their costumes, adults included. Last month we had the Tzivos Hashem matzah bakery come to Madison. This workshop was a lot of fun for all the students and adults who attended. This month we will be celebrating Passover at our Hebrew school by having our annual Model Seder. This month we are also celebrating the Bar Mitzvah of one of our Hebrew school students, Shane Green. Shane is currently in the 7 th grade at Fillmore Academy and doing well in school. We want to wish him Mazal Tov and good luck on his Haftarah. We know he will do a great job! Our annual Miss Chocolate candy sale has ended and we made a modest amount of money, thanks to all of you who always support the P.A. However, we need more parents to support our P.A. otherwise we will not be able to fund Tzivos Hashem workshops or Purim carnivals in the future. We use the profits from our sales to pay for these special events. We are still selling gift cards, including cards for Fairway. You can order online or pick up an order form in the office. Thanks again for your support. Finally we would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy Passover. Melanie Green The Parents Association

madisonjc.org Page Nineteen April 2017 A Message to MJC s Congregation and Friends: Spring is finally here. We can finally look forward to planning for summer and a more relaxed pace. Spring is also a time for Madison Jewish Center s Annual Fashion Show. The proceeds benefit its many spiritual and community activities. Many of you are aware MJC has a history of being a community leader for many years. Please consider supporting this event. MJC needs models, attendees, and donors of funds/merchandise to offset the cost of raffle prizes. Please leave a message for Barbara Stein at MJC (718)-339-7755, if you wish to participate. It truly is a fun and worthwhile event. Sincerely, Barbara Stein
