MUSIC IN THE CATHEDRAL has been endowed as follows: 7 February - Humphrey Whitbread (RIP) FIRE ALARM At the end of today s services we will sound the fire alarm. Please note there is no need to evacuate the building unless you are directed to do so. This is an opportunity to familiarise yourself with the sound of the alarm and for us to highlight the Cathedral s evacuation procedures. 2

FOOD BANK Donations of donations of coffee, long life milk, fruit juice, tinned fruit and vegetables, detergent, washing up liquid and toilet rolls can be left in the South Transept after the 8am service and between the 9.30am and 11.15am services TODAY. TRAIDCRAFT stall in the Slype next Sunday after the Parish Eucharist. Palestinian produce (olive oil, almonds, cous cous etc) will also be on sale. BOOK GROUP The next meeting is at 6pm on Tuesday 14 February, when we'll be discussing The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene. If you made a new year resolution to read more, why not come along? We're a friendly bunch and new members are always welcome! CLASSICAL GUITAR RECITAL BY Costanza Casullo on Saturday 18 February at 1pm in the Lady Chapel. Free admission. Retiring collection for the Cathedral Music Trust and Music Department. LECTIO DIVINA The next session will be held tomorrow from 8.15pm to 9pm in the Chapel of the Transfiguration. The group follows an ancient practice of scriptural reading, meditation and prayer, which promotes a close communion with God. For centuries the cathedral was the centre for this type of worship, used by the Benedictine monks daily, during its period as an important Abbey. We are a small group looking for expansion! Enquiries to Edward Bevin on 862472 YOUTH CONFIRMATION GROUP will start this Tuesday 7 February 5.45-6.30 for all those in school year 6 or above. Berkeley LENT GROUPS: this year we will be following a course based on the parables told on the Way to the Cross in the Gospel according to Luke, which will run in parallel to our series of sermons at Sunday evensongs in Lent. Choir Chaperones This important role will support the Master of Music in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the choristers by supervising them during rehearsals, services and performances. If you can offer a few hours on a rota basis please contact Lizzie Smyth: 01727 890245 / lizzie.smyth@stalbanscathedral.org Safeguarding Trainers To assist the Safeguarding Officer in delivering modules both within the Cathedral and Diocese. Working in pairs this role will interest those with either safeguarding and/or training experience. You will deliver prescribed training based on national guidelines, but adapted to meet local needs, 3

Initial closing date 9 February 2017. WALSINGHAM PILGRIMAGE 2017 Forms are now available for this year s pilgrimage to Walsingham, in Norfolk. This year it will run one more day to allow for more space, from Tuesday 7 November to Friday 10. Forms are available in the Canon Chancellor s pigeonhole. ADVENT CANDLES If you received a candle on Advent Sunday, the Flower Guild would be grateful if you are able to return the plastic tray that the oasis and foliage rested in. PALM CROSSES Ash Wednesday is fast approaching. Following ancient tradition, please could those who are able give their crosses from Palm Sunday 2016 into the Virgers Vestry by Sunday 26th February, so that Abbey Squad can use them to make the Ash required for this year s Ash Wednesday eucharists. Many thanks, The Precentor MOTHERS' UNION At the next evening meeting on Wednesday 15 February, the Precentor, Revd Berkeley Zych will give a talk entitled Science and Faith in the Chapter Room at 7.45 for 8pm. The Greek New Testament Reading Group meets this Monday, 8pm in the Library. 5 on the door and this month we re beginning our look at Paul s Letter to the Philippians with Philippians 1.1-26. We re very excited to have Bishop Richard Harries, the former Bishop of Oxford, visiting on Monday 13 February to discuss his book The Beauty and the Horror. The Director of the Humanist Society described this look at the wonder and suffering of the world as the best case that could be made for the presence of God. Come along to find out more and for an opportunity to buy a copy. Tickets 6 (full time students free), 7.30-9pm, Crypt. And don t forget to book your place on the courses starting after Half Term Kirsty Borthwick will be teaching Post-Beginners Greek on Wednesdays, Fr Berkeley will be leading an Introduction to Liturgy on Thursdays, and David Robinson from the Cathedral Meditation Group will be leading a Practical Introduction to Christian Mysticism on Fridays.
