Mary: Praying & Living the Joyful Mysteries

Transcription:

Scene 1 Darkness (Darkness; curtain closed; behind curtain, table at center with basin and few dishes in it, communion table covered with cloth) Narrator: (off stage through mic) The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name. (Mary enter from off stage right; veiled crosses on screen) Mary: (distressed) My son, my son! What have they done to you? How can this be? Didn t the angel tell me you would save the world? Now they re mocking you, asking you to save yourself. Can you? Won t you? I just don t understand. I remember it as if it was yesterday the day I learned I was going to have you. (move off to the side and become narrator; cross picture fades out). I was a carefree teenager. Young Mary: (enters from stage right caring water pitcher or jug. Pours water into a basin and begins to wash dishes.) Mary: I was engaged to Joseph a carpenter. It was an arranged marriage, but a good one. Gabriel: (enters from stage left) Young Mary: (startled, drops a dish) Gabriel: Hail, you are a very favored young woman. The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among woman. Young Mary: (puzzled look) Wh-what is this? Gabriel: Don t be afraid, Mary, because you have found favor with God. You are going to have a baby a son. You must call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Highest. The Lord God will give him the throne of David and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. Young Mary: How can this be? I have known no man. Gabriel: The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Highest will cover you with His shadow. Therefore, the Holy one that will be born will be called the Son of God. (Close curtain. Remove table, dishes, jug, and basin. Change cloth on communion table. Bring in bench. Fade back to cross.) 1

Mary: (narrating) He went on to say that my cousin Elizabeth was also pregnant even through she was well along in years and had been known as barren. His final words were nothing is impossible with God. But son, I look at you up there on that cross. How can it be that nothing is impossible with God? Can God still work this out? How? You are going to die! (sob, breaks a bit) I am so glad your father is not here. He loved you almost from the first. He loved me and was confused when I told him what the angel had said. He didn t know what to do. (Joseph enters from stage left and paces thinking) Mary: Finally, he came up with an idea; he would divorce me quietly. (Joseph lays down) While he was thinking of this, he had a dream. Joseph: (When Gabriel speaks sits up and listens.) Gabriel: (enters from stage left) Joseph, Son of David, don t be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because the child that is growing in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son and you shall call his name Jesus because he will save all people from their sins. (Gabriel exits) Joseph: (gets up, goes to back of auditorium, gets Mary; they wander up the stage right side of auditorium, knock on a door, door slams, then to another door, knocks and door slams. Then moves across front of stage to off stage left, knock and Innkeeper answers. This all happens as Mary narrates action.) Mary: Your father rose up the next morning, and we were married, earlier than planned, but your father loved us from that day on. I remember the trip to Bethlehem just before you were born. Your father was so concerned for me. He didn t want to take me on the trip, but Caesar had ordered that everyone was to be taxed. So, we went to Bethlehem. Bethlehem was crowded. Your father went from one Inn to another looking for room. None was available. Scene 2 Stable (Transition to Inn scene. Young Mary and Joseph meet the Inn keeper off stage left who shows them to the stable corner stage left.) (Away in the Manger background music) Mary: Finally, he found one Inn where the innkeeper didn t have room, but provided us with a place in the stable. Your father made me comfortable as much as possible in a stable. Joseph: (mucking out the stall, brings in the manger. Away in a Manger quietly playing in background) God, this is not what I had planned. I spent the last two months making baby Jesus crib. It was the best piece of furniture I ve made so far. You ve given us Your son to raise; so, I made it fit for royalty! Here I am mucking out a stall to prepare a place for this baby. What do you have in mind? Why should your son be born in a stable? This doesn t make sense. (Finishes the bed, brings Mary over and settles her. Baby is handed over) 2

Mary: That night, in a stable, you were born. The first to come welcome you were a group of shepherds. (Stable scene: Young Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus. Shepherds with sheep enter up aisle muttering among themselves it must be here somewhere. There s a stable. Could that be it? While by Our Sheep playing quietly in the background) Shepherd 1: (Once arrive on stage and take their places) We were in the fields watching our sheep. It was an ordinary night. Shepherd 2: Until the sky lit up as if it was daytime. An angel appeared in the sky! Shepherd 1: You can guarantee we were afraid. We were terrified. The angel told us to not be afraid. Shepherd 2: He gave us good news. He said that the Savior was born. Shepherd 3: He told us we would find him in a manger wrapped in cloths. Shepherd 1: If that wasn t enough, the angel was surrounded by a bunch of other angels; they gave glory to God. Shepherd 2: As soon as the angels left, we decided to come find him. Shepherd 4: Now we can go tell all of Bethlehem what God has done! (Shepherds exit up separate aisles two by two back to room in the back of the auditorium or elsewhere. As they go, talk to audience members. have you heard? The Savior is born! Curtain closes. Young Mary and Joseph exit stage left. Fade to Mary and cross) Mary: We didn t understand it all as it happened. I still don t understand. You re dying! God s not intervening. Why? My heart is breaking! It s just as Simeon said. (Fade to Temple. Simeon and Anna are at the Temple enter from stage right, Simeon stands at center, Anna closer to stage right. Young Mary, Joseph, and Jesus enter from stage left. Simeon walks up to them, takes Jesus. When Simeon starts talking, Anna joins him.) Simeon: Now, Lord, you may let me die in peace as you have said, because my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the presence of all peoples: A light for revelation to the gentiles and the glory of your people Israel. (Hands Jesus back) Behold this child will cause many to stumble and will raise many more up, and a sword will pierce your soul so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. (Simeon exits. Anna lays hands on the baby and then exits stage left. Curtain closes. Remove stable scene. Exchange burlap for lace on communion table. Add menorah or other 3

candlesticks. Young Mary hands baby to someone off stage left and Joseph receives Two Year Old Jesus. Fade to Mary and cross.) Mary: Yes, my heart is breaking, but how will this reveal the thoughts of many? I don t understand. I guess I ve never understood what was happening or how. I just trusted God. I must still trust Him, just as when you were about two years old. Scene 3 Wise men (Fade to house. Young Mary and Joseph playing with 2 year old Jesus corner of stage right. We Three Kings quietly playing in the background) Mary: We had found a place to live in Bethlehem. We enjoyed seeing you grow. Little did we realize the change that the men from the East who visited us would bring. Kings: (Enter from stage left and knock before entering, house set up on 1/3 of stage right. Joseph answers) King 1: Is this where we will find the King of the Jews? Joseph: (shocked, looks to Mary, then nods to the king) Come in. King 2: We have come a long way to see your son. King 3: Yes, we watched the stars and saw His sign in the sky. We followed it to Jerusalem. King 4: There we were told the King was to be born in Bethlehem of Ephrata. King 1: After seeing King Herod, we saw the star again. It led us to this house. King 2: We have gifts to give him. (Kings give gifts. Close curtain. Take away the house scene. Exchange it for the temple scene from before. Young Mary and Joseph exit side door to outside and return to enter in Scene 4 down aisle. Fade back to cross) Mary: They gave us gold, frankincense, and myrrh. They had a dream to not tell Herod about us, and they left shortly after. Joseph also had a dream. He immediately got us up and we left for Egypt. God protected us. He knew what He was doing. Scene 4 Jesus Ministry Mary: You ve tried to tell me repeatedly that you had to do your Father s work. Just as when you were twelve, we went up to the temple for Passover. Passover that s what we were celebrating last night. Passover is supposed to be filled with joy and hope not despair. (Pause to control tears) 4

Anyway, we went to Passover. When the feast was finished we left. Somehow, you didn t return with us. It took us a day of walking before we realized you weren t with the other families. You were gone! The return to Jerusalem was agony. Where was our son? (Fade to temple center stage. Pharisees holding scrolls, Young Jesus leaning over pointing to the scroll. Young Mary and Joseph enter down aisle searching. Enter up side of stage when found.) Mary: After another day of searching, we found you. You were at the temple studying no, YOU were teaching the leaders. Young Mary: (Hug Jesus) Son, why have you done this? Your father and I have been searching all day looking for you! Young Jesus: Why?! Didn t you know I would be about my Father s business? (Curtain closes. Remove temple scene. Put bench at center right under the cross. Leave communion table bare just wood. Fade back to empty cross) Mary: It didn t make sense, but at least we had found you, but now now you re you re gone! (sob, head bowed) John finally pulled me away from the cross! I couldn t bear to leave, but he insisted it was better for me. I ve heard that Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimethea have buried you. All our hope is gone. We thought you were to become king! Didn t the angel say that you would reign over the house of Israel? The people thought it, too! When you fed the 5,000 men and multitude of women and children with just five barley loaves and two small fish, the people wanted to make you king! But you would hear nothing of it. Then just last week, you came from Bethany. You sent your disciples after a foal of a donkey. (Three come forward handing out palm branches to audience. They say: Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. When they reach the front, one steps on stage and commands, Lay the palm branches down before the King. Adult Jesus enters followed by the crowd.) Crowd: Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna! Pharisees: (Enter from stage right to center, when the procession reaches the front, step forward to front of curtain down on first step.) Rabbi, tell your disciples to be quiet. Jesus: If they are silent, then the rocks will cry out. (Crowd disperses through front exit with donkey, side door, and back up side aisles. Stage crew brings bench in.) 5

Mary: (dejectedly sitting on bench at center of stage cross hanging behind) It s been three days. Such long days. John has tried to get me to eat, but I just can t. They killed my baby boy my first born who had done no wrong! I can t understand. Adult Jesus: (enters from stage left) Mother. (Mary runs to him and hugs him.) Mary: How? Why? What? I don t understand. How can this be? Adult Jesus: (motions for her to sit.) Let me explain. It was all the Father s plan. Remember how the angel told father that I would save the people from their sins? Well, that is what this is all about. Since the first woman and man disobeyed the Father. He said that all would die and be separated from Him. The Father promised them one who would come and bridge the gap between people and Him. I had to be born in Bethlehem, just as the priests told the men from the East. I was born in a stable and announced to shepherds, because the Father wanted ordinary people to know that his plan was for them as well as the wealthy. The visitors from the East brought gifts, which showed my future. The gold showed my royalty, the frankincense showed my roll as go between for God and man, and the myrrh the myrrh pointed to this time. It was for my burial. The plan called for my death, but not just a senseless death. It was a death to take the punishment for sin, but I would not stay dead. I would rise again. My death was so that everyone could live. My death brings life. All anyone must do is realize who I am and then believe that I am the way, the truth and the life. No one can come to the Father, but by me. Mother, I died for you so that you can come to the Father s house with me. I died for them too. (Motions out to crowd) The Father wants them with Him in His house. Mary: Thank you. You are my Lord and my God. Lights Out. Power point presentation of He Made a Way in a Manger (Use pictures of Joseph and Baby Jesus interspersed with photos of Jesus on the cross.) Invitation by Pastor 6
