(2) You shall not make for yourself an idol. (3) You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the LORD your God. (4) Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. Focus for the Child: Samuel tells people about God. As Samuel grew up, the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. And all Israel... knew that Samuel was a trustworthy prophet of the LORD. 1 Samuel 3:19 20 Session 13: Good News: God Speaks to Isaiah Scripture: Isaiah 9:2, 6 7 Main Idea for the Teacher: Isaiah tells the people that God is going to do something good. Focus for the Child: Isaiah is excited! For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

5 Scope & Sequence Wee Believe: God s Word for God s People (18 months 3 years) Winter 2009/2010 Session 1: Good News: Isaiah Tells the People Scripture: Isaiah 9:2, 6 7 Main Idea for the Teacher: Isaiah tells the people that a baby will be born. Focus for the Child: Baby Jesus will be born. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named; Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 Session 2: Jesus Is Born, the Angels Sing Scripture: Luke 2:1 20 Main Idea for the Teacher: Jesus is born and the angels sing the good news. Focus for the Child: Baby Jesus is born. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.... And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors! Luke 2:7, 13 14 Session 3: Jesus Is Born, the Shepherds Visit Scripture: Luke 2:1 20 Main Idea for the Teacher: Jesus is born and the shepherds visit and tell others about his birth, praising God. Focus for the Child: Baby Jesus is born. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.... the shepherds said to one another, Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us. Luke 2:7, 15b Session 4: Wise Men Look for Jesus Scripture: Matthew 2:1 2, 10 11 Main Idea for the Teacher: The Wise Men were seeking Jesus.

6 Focus for the Child: The Wise Men look for Jesus. In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage. Matthew 2:1 2 Session 5: Wise Men Worship Jesus Scripture: Matthew 2:1 2, 10 11 Main Idea for the Teacher: The Wise Men came to worship Jesus when he was born. Focus for the Child: The Wise Men worship Jesus. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasures chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Matthew 2:11 Session 6: Jesus Goes to the Temple Scripture: Luke 2:41 52 Main Idea for the Teacher: Jesus goes to the temple to listen and learn. Focus for the Child: Jesus learns about God. Jesus said to [Mary and Joseph], Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father s house? Luke 2:49 Session 7: Jesus Stays at the Temple Scripture: Luke 2:41 52 Main Idea for the Teacher: Jesus goes to the temple to listen and learn and I go to church to learn about Jesus. Focus for the Child: I learn about God. Jesus said to [Mary and Joseph], Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father s house? Luke 2:49 Session 8: Jesus Is Baptized Scripture: Mark 1:9 11 Main Idea for the Teacher: Jesus is baptized by John and blessed by God. Focus for the Child: Jesus is baptized.

Scripture: Mark 1:9 11 Main Idea for the Teacher: Through baptism I am adopted and welcomed into God s family. Focus for the Child: Jesus is baptized and we baptize, too. Question 42. What is baptism? Through baptism I am adopted and welcomed into God s family. In the water of baptism I share in the dying and rising of Jesus, who washes away my sins. I am made one with him and with all who are joined to him in the church. Session 10: Jesus Calls the Disciples Scripture: Mark 1:16 20, 3:16 19 Main Idea for the Teacher: Jesus chose twelve people to help him. Focus for the Child: Jesus chooses helpers. And Jesus said to them, Follow me and I will make you fish for people. Mark 1:17 Question 26. What did [Jesus] do during his life on earth? He called disciples to follow him. He fed the hungry, healed the sick, blessed children, befriended outcasts, required people to repent, and forgave their sins. He taught people not to fear, but to trust always in God. Session 11: Jesus Teaches the Disciples Scripture: Mark 1:16 20, 3:16 19 Main Idea for the Teacher: People followed Jesus and learned from him. Focus for the Child: People learn from Jesus. Focus for the Child: Wow! Jesus stops the storm! Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him? Luke 8:25b Question 26. What did [Jesus] do during his life on earth? A. He called disciples to follow him. He fed the hungry, healed the sick, blessed children, befriended outcasts, required people to repent, and forgave their sins. He taught people not to fear, but to trust always in God. He preached the good news of God s love and gave everyone hope for new life. Session 2: Jesus Shares a Meal Scripture: Luke 22:14 20 Main Idea for the Teacher: Jesus shares a meal with his disciples. Focus for the Child: Jesus eats with his friends. Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. And he did the same with the cup after supper... Luke 22:19 20a Session 3: We Share a Meal, Too! Scripture: Luke 22:14 20 Main Idea for the Teacher: When we share this meal, we remember Jesus. Focus for the Child: When we share this meal, we remember Jesus. Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. And he did the same with the cup after supper... Luke 22:19 20a

10 Session 4: Palm Sunday Scripture: Matthew 21:1 11 Main Idea for the Teacher: Jesus enters Jerusalem and the gathered crowd greets him with shouts of praise. Focus for the Child: People were happy to see Jesus. The crowds that went ahead of [Jesus] and that followed were shouting, Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven! Matthew 21:9 Session 5: Easter Scripture: Matthew 28 Main Idea for the Teacher: Jesus friends are happy to find out that he is alive! Focus for the Child: Jesus is alive! Alleluia! But the angel said to the women, Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples... Matthew 28:5 7a Session 6: Philip Tells about Jesus Scripture: Acts 8:26 40 Main Idea for the Teacher: Philip meets someone and shares the good news about Jesus. Focus for the Child: Philip tells about Jesus. Then Philip started to speak, and starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. 11 Session 8: A New Commandment: Jesus Loves Me Scripture: John 13:34 35 Main Idea for the Teacher: Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so. Focus for the Child: Jesus loves me. I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. John 12:34 35 Session 9: A New Commandment: Love Others Scripture: John 13:34 35 Main Idea for the Teacher: Jesus tells us to love others. Focus for the Child: Jesus wants us to love others. I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. Focus for the Child: God s Spirit makes me happy! When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Acts 2:1 4 Session 13: Pentecost: We Are the Church Together Scripture: Acts 2:1 15, 22 24, 37 47 Main Idea for the Teacher: People share the good news about Jesus and a new community of believers is born. Focus for the Child: We are the church together. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. Acts 2:46 47a Question 33. What were the results of Pentecost? The Holy Spirit filled the first Christians with joy by revealing what Jesus had done for us. The Spirit inspired them to understand and proclaim the gospel, and to live a new life together in thanksgiving to God.

[Paul] fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? He asked, Who are you, Lord? The reply came, I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. Acts 9:4 5 Session 2: Paul Spreads the Good News Scripture: Acts 9:1 20; 28:30b 31 Main Idea for the Teacher: Paul traveled to many places and shared the good news about Jesus with everyone he met. Focus for the Child: Paul told everyone about Jesus.
