Yet, as former Governor Walter E. Clark ponts out n an artcle contrbuted by hm to the Sunset Magazne, ths legslatve sesson was surrounded b y natural condtons such as have had no counterpart n human hstorv. The terrtory for whch ths legslature was elected to pass laws s probably larger than any other poltcal dvson of the earths surface presded over bv. an offcal othqr than a presdent o r soveregn. S o sparsely settled s ths great regon that Clark estmates the number of whte persons to the square mle of area at only about sxteen. t s, says he, as f the populaton of Quncy.., were scattered over a l surface equal to that of all the States ot the Unon east of the Msssspp Rver, exceptng New Engl New York. Moreover, n ths great nothern terrtory, there are no such means of quck communcaton as are famlar n older settled portons of Amerca The electon of the members of ths legslature, whch was to make the laws for an area of 600,000 square mles, was held n Novctn b e r last, eght Senators ben. chosen sxteen Representa tves. le electon regsters, ballots, other paptrs from two of the four great judcal dvsons of Alaska had to be transmtted to Juneau, the captal, through the mals overl n mdwnter, complete returns dd not reach Juneau untl February 2. There they were canvassed by the terr toral canvassng board. As Mr Clark says f, n the frst legslatve electon, the vat had been so close n certan pt.ncts a s to promse contested electons as between two or more cdates, unfortunate results would have followed, tor the necessary slownesss n makng returns to the canvassng board rendered t mpossble to ssue electon certfcates untl the members apparently elected had arrved n Juneau for the convenng of the legslature on March 3. n ths case however, the "face" returns were s o conclusve that there was no lkelhood of any contest. The members elected from the northwest dvsons were oblged to travl over the wnter tral. A general festve ar was notceable on a sdes; throngs of people makng ther way here there purchasng, chattng lookng over the vared taste ful selecton of t s e f u artcles w hch were everywhere dsplayed o best advantage. The Hawaan untet playng upstars near the ;al!ery added ts pleasant strans to the gaety of the scene, makng a delghtful event of the afternoon. Palms flowers were scattered hther thther n unstnted pro fuson makng a combnaton pleasng to the eye. most The show wndows whch are large roomy were very taste fully decorated, the dry goods ds-- p a y of lades delchts bene a- - rranged n most approved depart ment store manner. Several thous persons vsted the buldng durng the d a y, the cash purchases n one department alone amountng to near the four fgure mark. Tmely Notes The latest applcaton of the aeroplane, s to the red cross corps of the army n whch swft materal ad can be rendered n case of need. A darng story s told of Rene Smon the freuch avator who vsted te States. Hs tour brought hm to Texas where one day as he flew over the plans, he saw a herd of cattle stampedng beyond control of the cowboys. Wth a Frenchmans love o f darng, Smon decded to round up the herd hmself. Flyng over the steers, swoopng as close to the ground as he dared, he so terrfed the cattle that they turned rushed back up the range, keepng pace easly, Smon darted often them from sde to sde, frghtenng forcng n any stragglers. Fnally, when the herd was under perfect oontrol be turned t over to the cowboys. Plans are now under way by the government to organze natonal tmber patrols to be composed of fleets of aeroplanes. Dr. Herbert ves the well known physcst of Phladelpha has recently perfected an artfcal day- - lght cabnet, whch wll be of nestmable value n the dry goods departments of cty stores. A n ncescent, gas lght s placed n the top of the cabnet, There s a metal reflector whch throws the rays downward through delcate screens whch flter out the rays of red orange yellow whch are foregn t o delght. An advantage s clamed over ths, n that daylght vares from mornng to evenng, where as an average daylget may be mantaned n the ves cabnets.! Dr. A. J. Derl.y wll arrve n Lhue Wednesday the 2th.
