Assembly Bulletin Winter 2018 This Month s Meeting at the Francis J. Spence Diocesan Centre. Knights of Columbus ~ 4th Degree 1st Ontario District Archbishop James V. Cleary Assembly #0857, Kingston, ON 1922 ~ 2018 The Faithful Navigator Report It is impossible to find a saint who did not take the two P s seriously: prayer and penance! St. Francis Xavier I trust everyone has had a Blessed Christmas. Many of us are often conscious of the fact that as we gather with friends and family during this joyful season, emotions from present and past ghosts, illnesses or even losses, weigh us down emotionally. This often challenges us to keep the very joy in our hearts the season expects of us. How can we evangelize How do we conquer the influences of all this sadness and negative thoughts we are burdened with? The very Priests and Bishop we serve tells us often to pray. Now re-read St. Francis Xavier s quote above again (slowly). Try to understand his message to us. What does he really mean by this? We are all called to be Saints. Can we commit to the two P s in our life. Firstly, I would suggest that we set aside all the resolutions we have difficulty in keeping each year and often repeat without success. Instead truly commit oneself to a minimum of 5 minutes of quiet prayer time each day. By quiet I mean, no electronics or outside influences. Studies have proven that if we truly commit ourselves to change, a minimum of 6 weeks of devotion to the cause is required before the brain accepts it as routine in your life. I say start small (5 minutes) because it is much easier to increase your devotion in time when it becomes a routine in your life. Secondly, in your prayer offer up your burdens to Jesus. Reconciliation is our Sacramental gift from God. Remember mostly he is with you and wants to carry the troubles in your life so that you can be free of them and come closer to him. That is the ultimate gift of love he gives to each one of us. Now switching gears! I wish to share with each of you our successes over this past year. As a Patriotic arm and Honour Guard, we have been present on over 30 occasions this past year. Our presence has on many occasions raised eyebrows with the general public. Their curiosity has even allowed meaningful conversation allowing us to share with them, our Mission. One final note, and in acknowledging the Author of the quote from above. We as an Assembly and Knights have an amazing opportunity this January 10 th at St. Mary s Cathedral. There will be a tour of a first class Relic from St. Francis Xavier. I am asking for as many volunteers as possible to partake in this daylong event. If you can make yourself available for a minimum of 2 hours between 12 noon and 11 pm please inform me at asnrje6@gmail.com or 613-217-8220. I will be looking for Ushers (which will include all Knights) and Honour Guard (Fourth Degree) for the Mass and Veneration times as noted in the advertisement further in this newsletter. Now I leave you with this prayer: Continued Next Page

Our mission as Knights, empowers us to be there, for those in need. Keep Christ at the centre of your daily life. May the Joy of this Christmas; bring you a new Hope for 2018 SK Dale & Lady Lyne Tuepah - FComp 857 H) 613-389-2174 C) 613-329-5284 E) dale.tuepah@bell.net Continued from P. 1 Prayer to St. Francis Xavier at the service of the Church Lord God, by the preaching of St. Francis Xavier you brought many nations to yourself. Give his zeal for the faith to all who believe in you, that your Church may rejoice in continued growth throughout the world. May this prayer fill us with the same love that inspired Francis Xavier to work for the salvation of all. Help us to live our Christian calling and to inherit the promise of eternal life. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen. Vivat Jesus, Scott Arnold Faithful Navigator

S/K Garry Davis Faithful 2 nd year trustee, Past Faithful Navigator, It is not usual for a trustee to write a column in the Assembly newsletter but I have been encouraged to do so by our current Faithful Navigator, Scott Arnold. I know that he is under a lot of pressure these days because of the introduction of the new uniforms directed to be worn by July 1 st 2018 by our Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson and the Supreme Officers. This decision was made without any consultation with the current members in the Assemblies even though the cost of these uniforms is to be borne by all of us. The uniform change was made to induce 3 rd degree members to join the 4 th degree. So if it induces 3 rd degree members to join the 4 th degree and the current members don`t purchase these new uniforms, the question is; what is going to happen! I can see Assemblies starting to lose a lot of members and eventually folding for lack of an Executive to carry out the regular business required to function properly. What is the main purpose of the 4 th Degree. Why did we join it. I thought that we were supposed to be the visible arm of the Knights of Columbus. It used to be a very important method of recruiting new members into the Councils and hopefully eventually into our Assemblies. This uniform does not do that. It has no color and It`s reference to the Military is not what the Knights are about. As a veteran of the Royal Canadian Airforce for 36 years, I do have problems with this uniform and what it represents. On the day, that I retired was the last day I was allowed to wear my light blue uniform. Only active or reserve members in the Canadian Armed Forces can wear their respective uniforms. So all of a sudden I`m going to wear this designated Uniform that doesn`t represent anything to me. This won`t happen and it doesn`t indicate any lack of respect that I have for the Supreme Knight or the Supreme Officers by me. The current Sir Knights` regalia is very well recognized by just about everyone. Why change it to a military uniform that won`t easily be recognized as that of the Knight of Columbus. It is a major change and there appears to be no support for this change. The cost factor of over $700 which includes the exchange rate on the Canadian dollar, tailoring, taxes etc. will be prohibited to those on fixed incomes. Our only hope is that Supreme will reconsider their support of this before it is too [late]. I have outlined some of the problems that need to be considered before purchasing this new Uniform. In the end it is your choice and yours alone. Rena and I wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year 2018.
