What Does Proverbs Say About Our Words?

1. Recognize the link between your mouth and heart.

Recognize the link between your mouth & heart. Proverbs 16:23 The heart of the wise instructs his mouth And adds persuasiveness to his lips.

Recognize the link between your mouth and heart. Proverbs 26:23-24 Like an earthen vessel overlaid with silver dross Are burning lips and a wicked heart. He who hates disguises it with his lips, But he lays up deceit in his heart.

2. Realize the power of the tongue can be for good or bad.

Realize the power of the tongue can be for good or bad. Proverbs 14:3 In the mouth of the foolish is a rod for his back, But the lips of the wise will protect them.

Realize the power of the tongue for good or bad. Proverbs 10:11 The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, But the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.

Realize the power of the tongue can be for good or bad. Proverbs 18:20-21 With the fruit of a man s mouth his stomach will be satisfied; He will be satisfied with the product of his lips. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

3. Before you speak...

Before you speak- Listen carefully & think Proverbs 18:13 He who gives an answer before he hears, It is folly and shame to him.

Before you speak- Listen carefully & think Proverbs 15:28 The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer, But the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.

Before you speak- Listen carefully & think Proverbs 29:20 Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

Before you speak- look for the right time & say what matches the occasion. Proverbs 15:23 A man has joy in an apt answer, And how delightful is a timely word!

Before you speak- look for the right time & say what matches the occasion. Proverbs 25:11 Like apples of gold in settings of silver Is a word spoken in right circumstances.

Before you speak- look for the right time & say what matches the occasion. Proverbs 26:4-5 Do not answer a fool according to his folly, Or you will also be like him. Answer a fool as his folly deserves, That he not be wise in his own eyes

4. When you speak, don t...

When you speak, don t- lie. Proverbs 12:19 Truthful lips will be established forever, But a lying tongue is only for a moment.

When you speak, don t- lie or spread strife. Proverbs 6:16-19 There are six things which the Lord hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil, A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers.

When you speak, don t flatter. Proverbs 29:5 A man who flatters his neighbor Is spreading a net for his steps.

When you speak, don t gossip or slander. Proverbs 16:27-28 A worthless man digs up evil, While his words are like scorching fire. A perverse man spreads strife, And a slanderer separates intimate friends.

5. When you speak, do...

When you speak, do- spread knowledge & wisdom. Proverbs 15:7 The lips of the wise spread knowledge, But the hearts of fools are not so.

When you speak, do- spread knowledge & wisdom. Proverbs 31:26 She opens her mouth in wisdom, And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.

When you speak, do- speak up for the helpless. Proverbs 31:8-9 Open your mouth for the mute, For the rights of all the unfortunate. Open your mouth, judge righteously, And defend the rights of the afflicted and needy.

When you speak, do- rebuke. Proverbs 27:5-6 Better is open rebuke Than love that is concealed. Faithful are the wounds of a friend, But deceitful are the kisses of an enemy.

When you speak, do- rebuke, but don t waste words with fools. Proverbs 9:7-9...And he who reproves a wicked man gets insults for himself. Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you, Reprove a wise man and he will love you. Give instruction to a wise man and he will be still wiser...

When you speak, do- speak gently with the intent of benefiting others. Proverbs 12:18 There is one who speaks rashly like the thrusts of a sword, But the tongue of the wise brings healing.

When you speak, do- speak gently with the intent of benefiting others. Proverbs 15:1-2 A gentle answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise makes knowledge acceptable, But the mouth of fools spouts folly.

When you speak, do- limit your words. Proverbs 10:19 When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable, But he who restrains his lips is wise.

When you speak, do- limit your words & control your temper. Proverbs 17:27-28 He who restrains his words has knowledge, And he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding. Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is considered wise; When he closes his lips, he is considered prudent.
