PETE BUMGARNER MINISTRIES A NON-PROFIT CORPORATION FOUNDED OCTOBER, 1984 WORDS CONFESSIONS ANGELS STUDY GUIDE

WORDS CONFESSIONS ANGELS SCRIPTURE READING Psalm 103:20 Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word. Matthew 12:37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. Romans 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. THEME Since we are made in God s image, we can operate with the same principles that God practices. If we speak in faith what God has said about things, then our words will have power. Scripture gives us some important information about words, confessions, and angels. We will profit when we put such knowledge into action, and the world will benefit as well. I. INTRODUCTION A. There are several questions that we hope will be answered in this study. 1. Are words as important as some say they are? 2. What takes place in the spirit realm when we speak? 3. What is a confession? 4. How important are confessions? 5. Are angels really involved in everyday life? 6. Do angels really work for us? 1

B. Words play a tremendous role in communication. 1. Our words aid and assist us in communicating with each other. 2. Our words also communicate to the spirit realm. C. Words, confessions, and angels affect our destiny in this life. D. God knows the importance of words, confessions, and angels; therefore, He has given unto us much information in His Word concerning these three subjects and their relationship with each other. II. OLD TESTAMENT EMPHASIS UPON WORDS A. Noah built the ark as a result of hearing God s words spoken to him. (Genesis 6:13-22) B. Men were scattered over the face of the earth as a result of words. (Genesis 11:1-9) C. Esau believed the words that Isaac had spoken over Jacob. (Genesis 27:34) D. Balak hired Balaam to speak words against Israel. (Numbers 22:1-6) E. Job declared, How forcible are right words. (Job 6:24-25) F. It is obvious that men like Esau, Balak, and Job placed great emphasis on words, and they recognized the power in words. G. The Old Covenant is God s Word to man. III. WORD OF POWER A. The earth was brought forth and is maintained by the words that God spoke. (Hebrews 1:3; Hebrews 11:3) 1. The word of His power reveals the power backing His word. a. In the sentence structure of Hebrews 1:3, word comes before power. 2

b. The word power in this passage of scripture is the Greek word dunamis, which means force. c. God s Word is backed by His power, the force of God Himself. 2. The worlds were framed by the word of God. (Hebrews 11:3) B. Man, created in God s likeness, functions and operates with God s principles. 1. God created man as the dominant one over all creation. 2. Man s words are backed by his power. Man has authority as a result of the dominion given to him by God. 3. When man speaks God s words, the authority of both God and man are coupled together. C. Our lives are governed by our words. 1. Words are spoken, written, thought, and even visualized. 2. Our total communication is wrapped up in words. D. Are words as important as some say they are? 1. Without words being conveyed from one person to another, communication would be lost. 2. Right words are extremely important if we intend to communicate a clear message. 3. A message must be properly communicated in order to be understood. a. A bugler cannot sound retreat if he expects the army to charge. b. In giving directions to someone, you cannot tell him to turn right and then expect him to turn left. c. The spirit realm also requires clear communication; therefore, we must say what we mean and mean what we say. 3

E. What takes place in the spirit realm when we speak? 1. Our words determine what angels do on our behalf. (Daniel 3:17 & 28; Daniel 10:12) 2. Our words are heard in the spirit realm, and they are acted upon. a. Words of faith activate God. b. Words of fear and doubt activate the devil. 3. Binding and loosing take place when we speak. a. Binding and loosing are done with words. (Matthew 16:18-19) b. We bind and loose by what we say, not just by what we pray. c. The partnership of two agreeing on earth can work for us or against us, depending upon with whom or what we are agreeing. (Matthew 18:18-20) 4. Our conversation is working either for us or against us. F. What effect do words have on one s health? 1. The tongue of the wise is health. (Proverbs 12:18) 2. A wholesome tongue is a tree of life. (Proverbs 15:4) 3. Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones. (Proverbs 16:24) 4. Death and life are in the power of the tongue; therefore, to guard one's mouth is to guard one's life. (Proverbs 13:3; 18:21) 5. He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his soul from trouble. (Proverbs 21:23) 6. Obviously, words play a tremendous part in both the physical and mental health of an individual. 4

7. Meditation upon wrong words can destroy a person, both mentally and physically. G. We must realize and accept the importance of God s Word. 1. God s Word is settled in Heaven. It will not change or falter; It will do what He says It will do. (Psalm 119:89) 2. God s Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light to our path. (Psalm 119:105) 3. The entrance of God s Word gives light. (Psalm 119:130) 4. God has magnified His Word above His name. (Psalm 138:2) 5. God s Word does not return void. (Isaiah 55:11) 6. Man should live by God s Word. (Matthew 4:4) 7. God s Word is life and health to those who find It. (Proverbs 4:20-23) 8. God sent His Word to heal. (Psalm 107:20) 9. God reveals Himself to us through His Word. (John 14:21-24) 10. Angels hearken to the voice of God s Word. (Psalm 103:20) a. Hearken means to listen, give heed to; obey. b. The Bible is the Word of God; therefore, angels hearken when we say what the Bible says. c. The Bible has no sound until it is spoken by us. d. If we will speak God s Word, angels will hearken to what is being said. 11. The reason that God's Word is so important in our lives is that it enables us to order our conversation aright. 12. God's Word in our mouth brings tremendous results because the authority of heaven and earth are joined together. 5

IV. CONFESSION AND RESULTS A. What is confession? 1. Confession is assent, or agreement, or acknowledgment. 2. A confession is something that you say and agree with or acknowledge to be true. 3. Confession is not a substitute for faith. 4. One can confess with his mouth and yet doubt in his heart. B. Confessions can be either good or bad. 1. Our confession should be in agreement with God's Word. 2. Our confession can be in agreement with the circumstances. 3. Confessions, whether negative or positive, will bring results if we believe in our heart what we are saying with our mouth. C. Man's heart is the reservoir from which his mouth draws words. (Matthew 12:34) D. Man's tongue is as the pen of a skillful writer. (Psalm 45:1) 1. Just as a writer prints words on a page, so does the tongue print words into the heart of man. 2. The tongue is more powerful than the pen because it operates in both the physical and spiritual realms. E. The results of man's confession is determined by the heart. (Mark 11:23-24) 1. Believing in the heart produces a spiritual force called faith. 2. We have the option of believing either the Word of God or the circumstances. 3. What we believe is brought into manifestation, whether it be good or bad. 6

4. God's principle is to believe in the heart and to confess with the mouth. (Romans 10:9-10; II Corinthians 4:13) F. Listed below are some scriptural precautions concerning confessions: 1. We must fill our mouth with God s Word by putting His Word in our hearts in abundance. (Matthew 12:34) 2. A fool s mouth is his destruction. (Proverbs 18:7) 3. In the multitude of words there is no lack of sin. (Proverbs 10:19) 4. A man of knowledge spares his words. (Proverbs 17:27) 5. Be not rash with thy mouth. (Ecclesiastes 5:2) 6. Do not allow your mouth to cause your flesh to sin. (Ecclesiastes 5:6) 7. Think before you speak. (Proverbs 29:20) 8. We must let the words of our mouth and the meditation of our heart be acceptable to the Lord. (Psalm 19:14) 9. We must constantly keep a watch set at our mouth. (Psalm 141:3) G. Listed below are some examples of confession results: 1. The children of Israel asked and received; however, it was to their detriment. (Numbers 14:2 & 14:28-32) 2. Both David and Goliath made strong confessions, but only one proved to be true. (I Samuel 17:42-47) 3. The three Hebrew children boldly proclaimed God as their deliverer. (Daniel 3:14-27) 4. Jesus spoke to the fig tree, and His words were confirmed with signs following. (Mark 11:12-22) 5. The centurion made an astonishing confession. (Luke 7:1-10) 7

6. God s method of confession is believing first and speaking afterward. (Romans 4:17; Romans 10:9-10; II Corinthians 4:13) H. God s response to our words is determined by our confessions. 1. Words can be wearisome to the Lord. (Malachi 2:17) 2. Our words can be strong against the Lord. (Malachi 3:13) 3. The combination of blessing and cursing proceeding from our mouth is displeasing to the Lord. (James 3:10) 4. Our words justify or condemn us. (Matthew 12:37) 5. A person is defiled by the words of his mouth. (Matthew 15:11) 6. God hates a lying tongue. (Proverbs 6:17) I. Our reaction to God s Word should be as follows: 1. We believe; therefore, we speak. (II Corinthians 4:13) 2. One who loves God will keep His Word and speak It. (Joshua 1:8; John 14:23) 3. We must believe in our heart and confess with our mouth. (Romans 10:9-10) 4. We must believe the Word of God above everything. 5. God s Word must have first place in our lives. V. THE POWER OF THE TONGUE A. The tongue can sin. (Psalm 17:3; Psalm 34:13; Psalm 39:1) B. The tongue can cause the flesh to sin. (Ecclesiastes 5:6) C. The tongue has the power to bless or curse. (James 3:10) D. The tongue controls man s body. (James 3:2) E. The tongue controls our course of life. (James 3:1-12) 8

F. The tongue can bring victory or defeat by confessing what the heart believes. G. The tongue cannot be tamed by natural man. (James 3:8) VI. THE MINISTERING SPIRITS A. Angels are ministering spirits sent to minister because of those who will inherit salvation. (Hebrews 1:14) B. Angels look toward God for us. (Matthew 18:10) C. Angels aid and assist us. 1. An angel instructed Elijah to rise and eat. (I Kings 19:1-8) 2. Elisha was protected by a heavenly host. (II Kings 6:8-17) 3. Daniel was protected from the lions when an angel shut the lions' mouths. (Daniel 6:19-22; Daniel 10:12) 4. Jesus was ministered to by angels. (Matthew 4:11) 5. Peter and certain apostles were released from prison by an angel. (Acts 5:17-20; Acts 12:5-11) 6. The angel of the Lord encamps round about those who fear the Lord, and He delivers them. (Psalm 34:7) 7. Angels are given charge over us. (Psalm 91:9-12) 8. Angels give instructions. a. Hagar was instructed by an angel to return to Sarai and to submit unto her. (Genesis 16:7-12) b. Samson s mother was told of the birth of Samson by an angel. (Judges 13:3-5) c. Zacharias was told of the birth of John by the angel Gabriel. (Luke 1:5-17) d. The birth of Jesus was announced by the angel Gabriel. (Luke 1:26-38) 9

D. Angels are many in number. (Psalm 68:17; Matthew 26:53; Revelation 5:11) E. Angels are subject to Jesus. (Matthew 26:52-53; I Peter 3:22) F. Angels can spare or destroy. (Genesis 19:1-22; II Samuel 24:16; Daniel 6:22; John 5:4) G. We must not provoke angels because they will not forgive us. (Exodus 23:20-23; Luke 1:5-22) H. We must remember that angels hearken to the voice of God s Word. (Psalm 103:20) I. Ministering spirits serve; they are not to be served. VII. DEMONIC SPIRITS A. Demonic spirits are emissaries of Satan. B. Demonic spirits listen to your words. 1. Give no place to the devil. (Ephesians 4:27) 2. Resist the devil. (James 4:7-8) C. Demonic spirits are agents sent to deceive and to destroy. D. Satan appears as an angel of light. (II Corinthians 11:14-15) E. Certain scriptures seem to suggest that Satan is a fallen angel. (Isaiah 14:12-15; Ezekiel 28:12-19) F. Doubt-filled words activate Satan and his emissaries. 1. Words that are contrary to God s Word are filled with doubt. 2. Fear of failure produces doubt-filled words. VIII. WORDS AND CONFESSIONS IDENTIFY ONE S SPIRITUAL GROWTH A. A child speaks like a child, and he has a different perspective; therefore, he speaks differently from adults. (I Corinthians 13:11) 10

B. God wants us to grow up and to put away our childish talking and thinking. C. Calling things that are as though they are is a mark of spiritual immaturity. We must do as God does, calling things that are not as though they are. (Romans 4:17) 1. People often confess a negative report from a doctor instead of confessing what God s Word says. 2. People often confess the circumstances rather than the Word of God. God considers such confession an evil report. (Numbers 13:32) D. We must learn to say about others, ourselves, and circumstances what God has already said about them. Only then are we operating as spiritually mature sons of God. IX. SUMMARY A. Old Covenant people placed great emphasis on words. B. The power of words is determined by the power backing or standing behind the words spoken. C. Our lives are governed by words. D. Words are more important than most people realize. E. When we speak, things take place in both the physical and the spiritual realms. F. We bind and loose by our conversation, not by our loud demands. G. Words affect our health, either positively or negatively. H. God s Word is extremely vital to us. I. Angels hearken to God s Word as we speak what God has already said. J. Our words, impregnated with God s Word, bring us tremendous results. K. Confessions are simply words you say that you agree with or acknowledge to be true. 11

L. The outcome of our confession is determined by what we believe in our heart. M. Our confession must be in line with God s Word if we expect to please Him. N. Don t allow your mouth to destroy you. O. Remember the Bible examples of confessions. P. God responds to our words; therefore, we must say words that are well-pleasing to Him. Q. The tongue is a small member of the body, but it has tremendous power. R. Angels aid and assist us because we are the heirs of salvation. S. Angels have been given charge over us. T. Our words determine what the angels do on our behalf. U. One can determine his spiritual growth by his conversation. X. CONCLUSION A. Words can help us or hurt us. B. Confessions are extremely important. C. Angels are bound and loosed by our words and our confessions. D. Our words communicate our will to both the physical and spiritual realms. E. We must learn to say what God has said about every detail of our lives. F. Words, confessions, and angels play a vital role in the life of a believer. 12
