The Vermont Marble Company Treasurer s Records 1849-1940 (bulk 1866-1884) Doc 423-428 Introduction The Vermont Marble Company Treasurer s Records are letters, financial, and legal papers kept by Adolphus Smedberg of New York City, treasurer of the Rutland Marble Company and then treasurer of the Vermont Marble Company. The papers were acquired in 1991 from Robert E. Johnson (ms. acc. no. 91.20). The papers were found ca. 1983 in the attic of the West Rutland, Vermont, house once owned by Vermont Marble Company president, Mr. Montgomery. They are stored in six record storage boxes and occupy six linear feet of shelf space. The arrangement of the papers was completed and this guide prepared in 1996 as part of a project funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. Agency Sketch The Rutland Marble Company was originally a quarry in West Rutland operated by William Barnes. It then passed into the hands of General Horace Henry Baxter who operated the quarry with the help of his younger brother John N. Baxter (1822-1898). The business was incorporated in New York City and became known as the Rutland Marble Company. It included the Barnes/Baxter quarry and the quarry of (Charles) Clement and Sons. By 1880 the Rutland Marble Company had quarries in West Rutland, Center Rutland, and Salem, New York. Redfield Proctor was named manager of the company in 1880 by its president, Elisha Riggs, and soon after merged it and the Sutherland Falls Marble Company, which he had managed since 1870, to create the Vermont Marble Company. Scope and Content The Vermont Marble Company Treasurer s Records are the business records kept by Adolphus Smedberg of the Rutland Marble Company and it s successor, the Vermont Marble Company. The collection includes correspondence, financial statements, bills and receipts and contracts, agreement and other legal papers, 1866-1884. The correspondence includes letters from marble dealers, lawyers, bankers, and other marble companies in the Rutland area including Sheldon and Sons, Clement and Sons, and Ripley Sons. There are letters from Redfield Proctor of the Sutherland Falls Marble Company as a competitor before their merger in 1880, and once Proctor has taken control of the Rutland Marble Company there is some very interesting correspondence with Smedberg, seeking his advice and telling him plans for the creation of the Vermont Marble Company.

Vermont Marble Co. Treasurer s Records 2 Because Smedberg was in New York it was necessary for his quarry managers to send letters reporting the amount and types of marble quarried, sales, and monthly financial statements. The reports came on the letterhead of the Rutland Marble Company in West Rutland and Center Rutland, Vermont, and Salem, New York, and the correspondents were John N. Baxter, J. B. Holley, Charles A. Frost, B. F. Woodruff, John D. Allan, N. P. Simon, H. H. Love, C. Clark, E. F. Dana, and J. Clark. There is also similar correspondence from the Baxter Manufacturing Company in Salem, New York, by Charles A. Frost, John D. Allan, and Charles L. Sanford. Beginning in 1880 there are letters on Vermont Marble Company letterhead from Redfield Proctor discussing management issues, and from J. Clark, and William W. Clark continuing to report on the financial conditions of the Vermont quarries. Also included in the correspondence file are letters about the maintenance and rental of properties Smedberg owned in New York City. A major project of the Vermont Marble Company was providing the marble for the Indiana State House, 1880-1884, and the correspondence and notes on specifications and estimates are included in this collection. There are a few papers of the board of directors of the Rutland Marble Co. and the Vermont Marble Co. including notice of meetings, and excerpts from the minutes, 1863-1881. There are also lists of stockholders, 1866-1880, and copies of ballots from unidentified stockholders meetings. The remaining papers in the collection are a series of legal papers and a series of financial papers. The legal papers are deeds, contracts, agreements, stockholders proxies and stockholder agreements about bonds, transfer of stocks, and payment of dividends. There are copies of the incorporation and by-laws of the marble companies and copies of settlements of lawsuits and legal decisions about disputes. This series also includes several insurance policies. The financial papers are bills, receipts, notes, checks, etc., and statements, balances and accounts of the Rutland Marble Company quarries in West Rutland and Center Rutland and the Salem mill in Salem, New York. There are also accounts of the Baxter Manufacturing Company and the Vermont Marble Company. Although the connection is not clear there are reports of a grist mill, 1881-1885, kept on Vermont Marble company paper. There are also statements of Clement and Sons, 1872-1873, Ripley Sons, 1872-1873, 1881-1882, and the Sutherland Falls Marble Company, 1880. Miscellaneous papers include an undated map of the property of the Rutland Marble Company in West Rutland, an undated fragment of a map showing the Clement quarry, the Rutland Marble Company, and the Porter property; an 1870 tariff proposal, and an undated broadside of the Rensselaer and Saratoga Railroad listing the tariff for marble and slate; Rutland Marble Company price lists for 1868 and 1869; minutes of the board of trustees meeting of the Raymond Coal Company, 1876; a report on an unidentified marble company, ca. 1874-1875; a blueprint sketch of a coal shed over
