BIBLE STUDY God rescued His people from slavery in Egypt. He then led them into the desert toward Mount Sinai. The Israelites camped at the base of the mountain while Moses went up the mountain to talk to God. God gave Moses the laws the Israelites were to obey. God renewed the covenant He made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob with the whole nation of Israel. They were His people, and He was their God. (Ex. 19:5-6) God wanted perfect obedience from His people. His laws covered every part of their lives, and the laws were summed up in the Ten Commandments. God did not give laws just for the sake of having laws. His laws had a purpose; they revealed to the people what life will be like when Christ establishes His kingdom. They showed how righteous people live and interact with God and with others. The Ten Commandments can be grouped into two categories: The first four laws deal with a person s relationship with God and the last six laws deal with a person s relationship with others. Just 10. It would be easy enough to keep just 10 rules, right? The Israelites proved they could not keep a single one of God s laws. Their hearts were full of sin. Moses mediated for the Israelites, asking God to forgive the people s sin. Moses was a good mediator, but he wasn t perfect. The Israelites needed someone who could keep the laws perfectly for them, mediate between them and God, and satisfy God s wrath against them. They needed Jesus. (See 1 Tim. 2:5.) The preschoolers you teach this week have sinful hearts. They cannot obey God perfectly, and they need a Savior. Point preschoolers to Jesus and help them understand that God is pleased with us because He looks at Jesus, who never sinned. Because of Christ, we can have a right relationship with God. SUGGESTED THEME DECORATING IDEAS: Decorate your space to resemble the starting point of a great race, similar to an around-the-world expedition. Hang posters of various landmarks or world wonders, road signs, or clocks set to different time zones. You may also show the theme backdrop slide. 3-5 YEAR OLDS 1

Bible The Ten Commandments: Love God video Bible Story Picture Slide WORSHIP Worship leaders sing two songs with the children and collect offering. INTRODUCE THE BIBLE STORY (3 MINUTES) Introduce the Bible story by counting to 10 out loud with the preschoolers. As you count, hold your hands in the air and count using your fingers. Invite the children to do the same. Say Today we are going to hear a story from the Bible about 10 special rules that God gave His people. Let s listen to hear why God gave His people 10 rules. WATCH THE BIBLE STORY (10 MINUTES) Open your Bible to Exodus 19. Say The Bible is God s words. God s words are important. We can believe everything the Bible says because it is true. Today s Bible story comes from the second book of the Bible, Exodus. Show the Bible story video The Ten Commandments: Love God or tell the Bible story in your own words using the script provided. Use the bolded version for younger preschoolers. The Ten Commandments: Love God Exodus 19:1 20:11; 31:18 Moses and the Israelites were in the wilderness. They set up camp at the base of a mountain called Mount Sinai. God had rescued the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, and He had a plan to make them His special people. God wanted to make a special agreement with the Israelites. Moses went up the mountain. God called to him, saying, Tell the Israelites these words: You have seen what I did to the Egyptians and how I rescued you. If you listen carefully to Me and keep My covenant, you will be My people. Moses went back to the people. He told them what God had said. The Israelites said, We will do everything the Lord said. So Moses went back to the Lord. God told Moses, I am going to come to you in a thick cloud. Get the people ready to hear Me speak to you so that they will believe you. Moses got the people ready. Three days later, thunder rumbled and lightning lit up the sky. A thick cloud came down on the mountain, and a loud trumpet sounded. All the people in the camp shook because they were afraid. Then Moses brought the people out of the camp. They stood at the bottom of the mountain. God came down the mountain in a fire, and smoke covered the mountain. The mountain shook, and the trumpet sound got louder. God told the people not to come up the mountain. 2 3-5 YEAR OLDS

I am the Lord your God. I brought you out of the land of Egypt. I set you free from slavery, He said. Then God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. The first four commandments told the Israelites what it looks like to have a right relationship with God: Do not have other gods besides Me. Do not make an idol for yourself. Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. When God finished speaking to Moses, He gave Moses two stone tablets. God had written on the tablets with His own finger. Christ Connection: God gave us rules to show that He is holy. Our sin keeps us away from God, but Jesus came to bring us back to Him. Jesus is holy; He never sinned. We can trust Him to forgive our sin. Timeline Poster Main Point Slide Big Picture question slides TALK ABOUT THE BIBLE STORY (1 MINUTE) Say God gave us rules to show that He is holy. God doesn t have to try to do what is right and good, He just does it because He is right and good! Our sin keeps us away from God, but Jesus came to bring us to God. Jesus is holy; He never sinned. We can trust Him to forgive our sin. Point to today s Bible story on the giant timeline or big story circle as you ask the following review questions: 1. God said if the people kept His covenant, whose people would they be? (God s people) 2. What rules did God give to the people? (the Ten Commandments) 3. Which commandments tell us what it looks like to have a right relationship with God? (the first four) 4. What did God give Moses after He was finished speaking with him? (two stone tablets God had written on with His own finger) BIG PICTURE QUESTION (1 MINUTE) Say The Ten Commandments show us what God is like and what it looks like to love and obey Him. We are sinners and break God s rules when we make wrong choices. What is God s plan? God s plan is to rescue His people. God sent Jesus to rescue us from sin. KEY PASSAGE (5 MINUTES) Open your Bible to Hebrews 3:5-6. Read the key passage aloud several times. Say Our key passage tells us that Jesus always obeyed God. Jesus is holy; He never sinned. We trust in Jesus to forgive us and rescue us from sin. PRAYER (2 MINUTES) Invite kids to pray before dismissing to small groups. DISMISS TO SMALL GROUP Key passage 3-5 YEAR OLDS 3

Activity Page pencils or markers ACTIVITY PAGE Guide preschoolers to examine the items and circle those items they would say they love. Say God has given us so many wonderful things to enjoy, but God Himself is better than all the things He has given us. We are happiest when we love Him most of all. In today s Bible story, God gave commands to show His people what it looks like to love Him most. 10 minutes after the start of service Break into groups of 10 or less children for Small group ACTIVITY (10 MINUTES) red and green construction paper scissors (optional) REMEMBER GOD S COMMANDMENTS Cut red and green construction paper into several pieces, one piece for each preschooler. Give each child one red piece of paper and one green piece of paper. Explain that you are going to call out some rules. Some will be God s commandments; others will be made-up rules. When children think you said one of God s commandments, they hold up the green card. If they think you said a made-up rule, they hold up the red card. SAMPLE RULES: Do not have other gods besides Me. (green) Eat pizza every day. (red) Do not make an idol. (green) Sleep with your shoes on. (red) Do not misuse God s name. (green) Do not brush your teeth. (red) Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. (green) Say Rules are important. We have lots of rules at home, at church, and at school. God s rules are most important. God gave us rules to show that He is holy. Our sin keeps us away from God, but Jesus came to bring us back to Him. Jesus is holy; He never sinned. We can trust Him to forgive our sin. SNACK TIME Gather preschoolers for snack time. Thank God for the snack. Invite preschoolers to count to 10 after you have finished passing out the snack. As the children are eating, remind them that God gave His people 10 rules to show that He is holy. The first four commandments talk about loving God. 4 3-5 YEAR OLDS

TRANSITION When a child finishes his snack, guide him to throw away any trash. He may select a book or puzzle to examine, play quietly with toys, or color the Journal coloring page. crayons Journal Page JOURNAL PAGE Offer the journal page and invite preschoolers to draw a picture of themselves obeying one of God s commands. Pray for the children. PRAY Say Dear God, thank You for being holy. Thank You for always doing what is right and good! Thank You, God, for sending Your Son, Jesus, to come to earth to rescue us from sin. Thank You, Jesus, for dying on the cross and coming back to life to save us, even though You never disobeyed God. Thank You for changing our hearts to love You and obey You when we trust in You. Amen. While preschoolers might not be ready to respond to the gospel, use this guide to help little minds begin to grasp big truths about Jesus and the kingdom of God. GOD IS KING. Ask: Who is in charge at home? Who is in charge over the whole world? Explain that God made everything! He is King over everything, and He is in charge. WE SINNED. Ask: Have you ever done something wrong? Tell preschoolers that everyone sins, or disobeys God. Our sin makes God sad. GOD SENT JESUS. Explain that God must punish sin. He loves us and He sent His Son, Jesus, to earth. Jesus came to take away the punishment for sin. JESUS LOVES. Ask: Do you like presents? Explain that Jesus gives us the best present. He never did anything wrong, but He was punished in our place. Jesus wants to take away our sin because He loves us. Pray that God will save your preschoolers. As you faithfully teach the Bible, you are planting gospel seeds in children s hearts. Ask God to grow the preschoolers into children who love and trust in Jesus. THE GOSPEL: GOD S PLAN FOR ME Use Scripture and the guide provided in the classroom to explain to boys and girls how to become a Christian. Assign individuals to meet with kids who have more questions. If this is not possible, encourage boys and girls to ask their parents, leader, or other Christian adults any questions they may have about becoming a Christian.
