File: Believe Ch. 16 Biblical Community Dear Friends in Christ, Grace to you and Peace from God our Father and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen! Some of the largest and most majestic trees in the world grow among other things in Humboldt County in Northern California They are the giant redwood trees. They commonly grow 200-275 feet tall. The largest known redwood is about 370 feet tall. That s taller than a football field is long including both end zones. It s estimated that the biggest one each year grows enough wood to (get this) create a new tree that s 90 feet tall with a trunk 12 inches in diameter. And if you cut it into boards 1 foot wide, 12 feet long and 1 inch think and placed the boards end to end it would stretch over 100 miles and could build 120 average sized homes. THEY ARE SPECTACULAR and if you ever get to northern California they are worth the trip to see. As amazing as they are to look at what s truly amazing is they have a pretty shallow root system and yet they rarely ever fall over and you will almost never see one by itself. How do they keep standing even in the wildest rainstorms, heavy winds and earthquakes? It s because their shallow root system reaches out horizontally for great lengths and intertwines with the roots of other redwoods to 1

support each other. One lone redwood by itself can t become a giant redwood because it s root system isn t connected with others. It is a real life example of our topic for today in our Believe Series on Biblical Community. Because what we re coming to understand in our Believe series is that it really does matter what we believe and what we do in response to God s grace. It is after all one thing to talk about what we believe but it s another thing to put that belief in action. And just like those giant redwoods need to be part of a redwood community so they can literally sustain life for each other and become giant redwoods we are called to be part of a biblical community. From Genesis to Revelation it is clear that we are designed by God for community. It s not meant to be just something we add on for a balanced life. It s meant to be integral to our life. That s why our Key idea for this week is I fellowship with Christians to accomplish God s purposes in my life, in the lives of others and in the world. You can find community in a lot of places in life. It might be with your neighbors, on an athletic team or a club at school, perhaps in your family, it might be other parents on the sidelines at your child s athletic teams or at work or with fishing or hunting friends. 2

But here s what s different about Christian or Biblical community: We are broken people fueled by God s mercy and forgiveness, washed in God s grace unified around a mission to accomplish God s purposes. We re not a bridge club, or country club, or political party, or athletic team. A Christian community is a bunch of beautiful people in God s eyes unified to full a mission to ultimately show people who awesome God is. That s who we are: pointing people towards God and it s Biblical. In the Old testament God gives instructions to His people for living together in the wilderness. He gave them explicit instructions to build a big tent called the tabernacle and when it was built it was put right in the center of the community. In the back there was a special room called the holy of holies that was sealed off by a big curtain. In the Holy of Holies the presence of God resided and the people had no access to the presence of God. In Exodus chapter 40 God came down and the tabernacle was so filled with the presence of God that even Moses couldn t get in. But God was still at the center of this biblical community. In the New Testament God created this new community called the church but something dramatic happened for us at the death of Christ. When Jesus dies on the cross it says in Matthew 27:51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. Remember that curtain in the temple that separated the people from the presence of 3

God? Because of Christ that barrier between us and God was removed. God s new dwelling plac3e or you might say God s new tabernacle is in us. And we have 24/7 access to God. 2 Corinthians 6:16 For we are the temple of the living God. We are meant to gather in his name, not just here in worship on Sunday but with other Christians to encourage and uplift one another. We re sort of like this glade plug in. Here s the receptacle and when you put this little plastic thing in it produces a beautiful scent for all. We are to be plugged in to the word and work and will of God as a Christian community to give of the incredible scent of God s forgiveness grace and mercy. When people come around you what do they smell, do they smell hostility and anger or do they walk away saying wow there s something different about this person and it s good. And just like this plug in needs both the receptacle and the little bottle with the scent and just like those redwood trees need each other we can t do it on our own we need each other. That s why it s important to have as part of your life a group of other committed Christians. It s one thing to come on Sunday s and that s awesome but when you leave where s your faith support? Parents tell kids all of the time to put yourself around the right kind of people. Obviously because the good stuff rubs off. 4

The passage from Acts gives us a peek inside the living room of the 1 st century Christians. Yes, they lived for each other and shared and did all that, but notice they didn t exist just for themselves but also for the benefit of those who didn t know the Lord yet. They gave to those in need, not just those in need who were part of their group. They were empowered to do that because of their community, their eating bread together and praising God together. Over the years I ve always enjoyed going to different sporting events at Champlin Park. I ve never heard anybody say---you know what I m never going to any of those football basketball or hockey games again. Every time I go they ask me for money---some of the people I sat with didn t seem friendly they didn t even say Hi to me---the seats were too hard and uncomfortable---the referee made some calls I didn t agree with---some games went into overtime and I was late getting home---the band played some numbers I d never heard before--- Plus some games are scheduled when I want to do other things---plus, you know what when I was growing up my parents took me to too many games so I don t take my children to any games, because I want them to choose for themselves when they grow up what sport they like the best. If somebody said that to you about going to an athletic contest over at the High School or to a youth sporting event you might think those are pretty lame excuses. 5

And yet, we hear those kinds of comments about church and frankly they can be pretty lame as well. We get to be here, worship the risen Lord, who created you, knows you by name, showers grace and mercy on you, who not only calls but encourages you to develop spiritual friendship and Christian community man what an awesome privilege. Is being part of a Christian community in some form always beautiful and perfect? Heck no, why? Because it s people. But imperfection is not a reason to not be part of a faith community. We come together because God calls us to be in community with one another: We re called to be here for each other and you might need to take the initiative sometimes instead of waiting for others to come to you. Romans 12:4-5 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, for one body, and each member belongs to all the others. Romans 12:10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Galatians 5:13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. Galatians 6:2 Carry each other s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 6

Ephesians 4:2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Matthew 18:20 For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them. Look, there s not a single one of us here in this room who at some point and possibly even this morning hasn t had some questions about faith, some doubts or wonders about why certain things happen and why stuff we think should happen doesn t happen, or why do we have to go through certain things and God s role in it all. Having those kinds of questions is to be human and quite frankly it s the most authentic kind of faith. Christian community, some Christian friends, a small group a Bible study, whatever form the Christian community takes is like those roots of that redwood forest. We intertwine with each other strengthening and encouraging one another. If we try to go through all of that stuff alone we re like that one redwood we ll be blown over by the storms and winds we face in life. But with others God will help us endure. Together with others we can endure and thrive and point the way to Jesus. 7
