HAMSA The Hand of Miriam HADASSAH AT STONEBRIDGE Volume 7, Issue 2 May 2017/ Iyyar-Sivan 5777 Southern New Jersey Region Hadassah, the Women s Zionist Organization of America, Inc. Presidents Message: A young man from Gaza transforms himself into a medical clown at Hadassah hospital. This is the story of...how A CLOWN WAS BORN. We think you will enjoy reading about it! After receiving treatment for a rare cancer in Israel and being uplifted during his painful hospital stay by medical clowns, 23-year-old Abdullah Abu Shaaban from Gaza decided he wanted to join the profession of medical clowning. I was sitting in my hospital bed the first time I met a medical clown, Mr. Abu Shaaban recalls. I didn t know that there were such people as clowns and thought that a crazy person had come into my room. I wondered how people were allowed to do such things in a hospital. It quickly became clear to him, however, that the clown was there to cheer him up. The clown pulled me out of my depression and brought joy into my life, he said. I knew at that moment that I wanted to be a clown. Mr. Abu Shaaban, lacking the financial resources to formally study clowning, resorted to developing his skills through YouTube videos and websites. Then, with the help of social media, he connected with American-Israeli documentary filmmaker Sasha Kuperstina, who was creating a documentary about clowning in Israel. She reached out to David Barashi at Hadassah hospital to explore the possibility of Mr. Abu Shaaban training with him. Mr. Barashi presented the idea to Prof. Eitan Kerem, head of the Pediatrics Division at Hadassah, who gave it his blessing. The plan: Mr. Abu Sheeban would come to Israel for four weeks to study under Mr. Barashi, and Ms. Kuperstina would film him for her documentary. We think this is one small step on the path to building a stronger relationship between people from two different worlds. This is one tiny example of the magic that takes place at Hadassah Hospital every day. Thanks to all of our members who work so hard to contribute to the successes big and small at HMO. Everything you need to know about activities and programs coming up are in this issue of Hamsa. Please read it and join us for as much as you can fit into your schedule. We look forward to seeing you.soon. Karen Hyman and Lynn Bender Co-Presidents 1

Education News Barbara Nalitt and Judy Freilich Education Co-Vice Presidents In the interest of providing a wide range of educational programs, we are trying some new things this year. On Tuesday April 25th, we were delighted to host our first Yom Hashoah Program in the Stonebridge Clubhouse Ballroom. We had well over 200 in attendance. Many Hadassah members were there along with friends and spouses but we also welcomed many members of our community to this event. Miriam Gottesman Dobin was our guest speaker. As a 2nd generation Holocaust survivor she was raised in a unique family situation, and she spoke about how her family survived and was able to move forward. She shared from her book, I AM Because of You. Her talk was stimulating, and you could feel the emotion in the room grow as she spoke of the difficulties her mother, father and other family members experienced. We were honored to share the importance of Holocaust Remembrance Day with the Stonebridge Community and felt that it was truly a successful outreach effort. May We Never Forget. On April 27th, we held our book discussion on The Night, The Day by Andrew Kane. We were fortunate enough to have 3 houses in which we met. Our gracious hostesses were Eileen Adams, Ellen Parker Keller and Michele Greenfield. Our capable facilitators were Karen Sulzman, Roz Blinder and Terry Luxenberg. As always, the discussions were lively and close to 50 women attended. If you have never been a facilitator or hostess for Hadassah, please volunteer. We love the intimacy of our book discussion and can only keep this format, if we have volunteers! The next book discussion will be on The Orphan s Tale by Pam Jenoff. It will be held on June 22nd. 4
