Page 1 of 6 Subject: False Teachers (146.5) Title: Warning Against False Teachers Proposition: To study our Lord s statement regarding false teachers in Mt 7:15-23. Objective: So that we will appreciate the caution that is called for in dealing with false teachers. Warning Against False Teachers Introduction: 1. The Bible contains many warnings about false teachers. 2. There are and always have been many of them in our world (1 Jn 4:1). 3. The New Testament contains some very strong statements made for the purpose of impressing our minds with the danger of these false teachers--(romans 16:17-18) Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. {18} For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. 4. The Bible teaches us that being religious is not the same thing as being righteous (Acts 17:22-23). 5. Some people go about seeking to establish THEIR OWN RIGHTEOUSNESS (Rom 10:3). 6. Many men come along with their own gospel, which is not the gospel of Christ (Gal 1:6-9). 7. Many false teachers can even fool themselves into thinking they are faithfully serving God while they oppose the truth--john 16:2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. 8. The false teachers and those who follow after them are going in a direction that is not good--isa 65:2 I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts. 9. It has to be obvious to any Bible student that warnings about false teachers is a vitally important Bible topic. 1) If we should neglect this subject, we would overlook a crucial aspect of Bible teaching. 2) The Apostle John adamantly warned the brethren--1 John 3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. 3) Jesus spent a large portion of His time on earth warning men of false teachers. 4) In one particular section of the SOM, Jesus makes five penetrating points about false teachers. 10. Refer to S T P O. 11. Main Points

1) The DANGER of False Teachers. 2) The DECEIT of False Teachers. 3) The DISTINCTION of False Teachers. 4) The DEFENSE of False Teachers. 5) The DESTINY of False Teachers. Page 2 of 6 Discussion: 1. The DANGER of False Teachers (Mt 7:15). Mat 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 1. Jesus calls them wolves. 2. Wolves are hungry and dangerous animals. 3. You do not want to be around them. 4. RAVENING WOLVES it is a grim picture to paint about anyone, much less about religious people! 1) They are spiritually deadly! 2) When such wolves were allowed to enter the early church, they ripped it to shreds and devoured its members. 3) Paul warned the Ephesian elders (Acts 20:29-30) For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. {30} Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. 4) In the process, false teachers cause their followers to err and led them to destruction. 5) The warning from Isaiah of old is especialy appropriate (Isaiah 9:15-16) The ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail. {16} For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed. 5. The thing that is especially dangerous about a false teacher is the falsehood of his message. 1) Truth is beneficial but falsehood is deadly. 2) Untrue prophets either speak or write false ideas 3) False teachers tell lies (Jn 8:44). 4) They make their converts sons of hell--mat 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. 6. This falsehood which characterizes the message of the false teacher makes them DANGEROUS--keep away!!! 2. The DECEIT of False Teachers (Mt 7:15). 1. In order to get someone to accept a lie as though it were the truth, the false teacher must somehow deceive a person into thinking the lie is what it is not. 2. Not all sheepskin is on sheep!

Page 3 of 6 3. Some sheepskin is being used to make wolves LOOK LIKE sheep. 4. Not all Scripture-quoters are Scripture-doers. 5. Satan s false teachers use the Bible to conceal their true nature. 1) Simply using Scripture does not guarantee a PROPER use of Scripture. 2) We must be sure the Scripture is RIGHTLY DIVIDED or HANDLED ARIGHT (2 Tm 2:15). 6. A false teacher can be so deceptive that he can lead people to think that he is an angel of light--(2 Corinthians 11:13-14) For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. {14} And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 7. Some false teachers are able to convince Christians that they are brethren, though in reality they are FALSE BRETHREN (Gal 2:4; 2 Cor 11:26 In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren). 8. There are religious people in the world today who seem so outwardly pious, but things are not always as they appear. 9. Many of these people are inwardly wolves and Satan is using them to gain precious souls to quench his ravenous appetite. 3. The DISTINCTION of False Teachers (Mt 7:16-20). (Matthew 7:16-20) Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? {17} Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. {18} A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. {19} Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. {20} Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. 1. Since false teachers use deception, we can be fooled unless we have some way properly to recognize them. 2. The key is having a Berean spirit--acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. 3. Here, our Lord tells us that there is a tell-tale mark to distinguish false teachers from teachers of truth. 1) Verses 16-20 tell us to check what they produce. 2) Their deeds do not match their words. 3) They preach commitment to God s word, but refuse to commit themselves to it concerning the most basic of items. 4) This seems to be the central point of verses 15-23. 5) They say some good things, but do not do what they say (Mt 23:1). 6) In verses 22-23, the Lord says that even in the judgment, Many will say, but they haven t done. 4. We can see a big difference in what sectarians say and what they do. 1) They read the Bible and quote Revelation 22:18-19 in theory, but fail to carry it out in their actual teaching.

Page 4 of 6 2) They say, God told me, and open your hearts to the Lord, but then they blatantly deny the clearest Bible teachings. 3) They honor God with their lips, but their heart of hearts is far from Him (Mt 15:8). 4) The shout: The Bible ONLY, and then practice their own doctrines--mat 15:9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 5) You can ask a man if he accepts the Bible ALONE and he will say YES! 1- You ask him where he found the Missionary Baptist Church in the Bible-- Oh, that s not important. 2- You can ask him where he read about MIM-- That doesn t mater. 3- Where do you find the Sinner s Prayer, in the Bible?-- It doesn t make any difference. 4- Well, I thought you accept the Bible ONLY-- YES, I SURELY DO! 6) BUT, just reading the Bible and making claims about obeying it is not nearly good enough--(john 5:39-40) Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. {40} And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. 7) BY THEIR FRUITS YOU SHALL KNOW THEM, Jesus says! 4. The DEFENSE of False Teachers (Mt 7:22). Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 1. All of their lives they pat themselves on the backs and justify themselves for believing what they believe and for practicing what they practice. 2. Right up until judgment, they will be calling Him Lord and claiming themselves righteous. 3. Jesus, of course, knows better. 4. He knows about hypocrites who make claims but do not back them up. 5. Caling out, Lord, Lord, does not make a person pleasingin the sight of God--cf., v. 21; Luke 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? 6. Yet, many wil have the nerve to tel Jesus that it was IN HIS NAME that 1) They built gymnasiums and entertainment parks with His money. 2) Taught man-made doctrines with His name on them. 3) Cast out demons, prophesied, etc. 4) Actually, all they did was claim the name. 7. Caling the Lord s name over an action does not justify it. 1) Caling something Gambling for Jesus does not make the thing itself right. 2) It is not wise to attempt to justify people whom the Lord condemns simply because they attempt to cover their sectarian deeds behind His name. 8. There is a big diference between caling Jesus name over something and actualy doing something IN HIS NAME!

Page 5 of 6 1) To do something in His name is to do it with his OK or approval--acts 3:6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. Acts 4:10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. 2) Far too many times men try to put His stamp of approval on things that Christ Himself has not approved (2 Jn 9). 3) Jeremiah preached against prophets who used God s name to justify their teaching or give it validity (Jer 14:14-16). 9. God says--isa 66:4 I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not. 10. We need to listen to the warning Jesus gives--mat 7:19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 5. The DESTINY of False Teachers (Mt 7:23). Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. 1. What will happen to the people who say and do not? 2. These people have done much talking and made many claims, but what will He say to them--i NEVER KNEW YOU: DEPART FROM ME. 3. I don t realy enjoy reading that, but it does make me take a very careful look at what I teach and preach! 4. Do I believe what I am teaching because of family and friends or because some brother in Christ teaches it? 5. The truth must be my consuming quest (Prov 23:23). 6. I must love the truth, be willing to fight for it, be willing to be ridiculed for it, even die for it. 7. These words of Jesus in verse 23 are not widely used or accepted today. 1) Though Paul DID NOT, many preachers DO preach to please men (Gal 1:10). 2) We cannot lower ourselves to that level. 3) When truth is preached to people who systematically reject it time after time, God says, ENOUGH, LEAVE THEM ALONE (Hos 4:17). 4) There eventually comes a time to quit casting pearls before swine (Mt 7:6). 5) Jesus says dust off your feet and go on to other prospects without feeling guilty about their not accepting the truth (Lk 10:11). 8. Some preachers want to be popular so desperately that they will preach what people want to hear--jer 5:31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof? 9. Some among us want to be like the sectarian world, as in the days of Ezekiel-- (Ezekiel 5:7-8) Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because ye multiplied more than the nations that are round about you, and have not walked in my statutes,

Page 6 of 6 neither have kept my judgments, neither have done according to the judgments of the nations that are round about you; {8} Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I, even I, am against thee, and will execute judgments in the midst of thee in the sight of the nations. 10. There are many other preachers among us who just don t want to make any waves, and so they fail to speak up when false teachers need to be rebuked. 11. A terrible fate awaits those who teach falsely and to those who receive the false teaching! 12. Both groups will hear our Lord say: I NEVER KNEW YOU, DEPART FROM ME. Conclusion: 1. False teachers are a threat to our eternal destiny and we need to examine carefully the fruit of any teacher to determine whether or not he is worthy to follow. 2. After speaking these words concerning false teachers (Mt 7:15-23), Jesus authoritatively closed the sermon with the discussion about wise and foolish builders. 3. May we all cherish the doctrine of Christ to the degree that we will not only hear it, but that we will obey it and abide in it (2 Jn 9-11).
