October 2006 (Ramadhan 1427) The Holy Month of Ramadhan is expected to commence on September 24 th (Sunday) depending on moon sighting. R A M A D H A N M U B A R A K HOLY QUR AN O you who believe! obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority from among you; then if you quarrel about anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you believe in Allah and the last day; this is better and very good in the end. (4:59) Say: Obey Allah and obey the Messenger; but if you turn back, then on him rests that which is imposed on him and on you rests that which is imposed on you; and if you obey him, you are on the right way; and nothing rests on the Messenger but clear delivering (of the message). (24:54) The ISLAMIC EDUCATION CENTER OF HOUSTON comes alive during the Holy Month of Ramadhan with daily spiritual and educational activities for the community. As you go through the pages in this newsletter you will get a sense of the intensive schedule that has been created to serve the needs of all the community members during this Month of Glory. This year an extra attempt has been made to cater to the young and energetic youth. With daily programs that touch various Islamic topics and encourage participation, the parents are sure to find that their children s time being spent at the IEC is truly beneficial and a blessing. Daily sessions will be conducted half our before the Maghrib prayers and a second session will be held for half hour after the Ishaa prayers in the Al-Zahra library. Extended sessions will be held on Fridays and Saturdays. High School and college age students will gain a lot of insight into issues related to Islam when they attend the English Majalis by Sheikh Hashim during the days of Mourning for Imam Ali (AS). The Nights of Qadr or Destiny or Power (19, 21, 23 rd ) are special in this month and the masjid will be open all night, each night for prayers and a maal, insha-allah. Other special events include the Wafat of Hazrat Khadija (10 th ) and the Wiladat of our 2 nd Imam, Hasan Al-Mujtaba, AS (15 th ). The Day of Quds (20 th October, last Friday of Ramadhan) is an annual event that is used to highlight the plight of the oppressed people. Over the years the occupation and colonization of the Muslim world by usurping governments and war mongers has kept the Muslims from gaining independence and to seek self-determination. The recent victory in Lebanon against the Zionist forces who were backed by big-money and weapons manufacturers was a monumental achievement for those who were deemed weak and unworthy. We will voice our opposition to atrocities and revive the Palestine issue and other issues as we gather in downtown Houston for a rally. You can get more information on this later as the Quds Days draws near. We hope and pray that Allah (SWT) accepts our humble service in the cause of Islam and encourage you to come forth and participate in making this Holy Month the most blessed one. SURATUL-LUQMAN During the Holy Month of Ramadhan Moulana Shabirri will be providing insights into the meanings of this Holy Surah. Time: Prior to Isha prayer on alternate days Duration: 15 minutes Location: Prayer Hall
