FOURTH QUARTER 2017 Quarterly News Great Work in 2017! In this Issue Hello Everyone, I would like to thank you for all of the great work you did this year. I look forward to reading about it in your year-end reports. It is so important that you get these reports back to me by the end of the year. This is each Unit s opportunity to give specifics on what they are doing and by filling out the reports you have a chance to remember all the great things that your unit has accomplished this year! In this newsletter edition you will find dates for the District and Conference 2018 events. Please mark your calendars and keep these dates handy when planning events at your church and for your unit. We want to make sure we do not schedule events on the same day that other events are already scheduled. There is still time to register for Assembly. This will be a memorable event and I hope that every unit can try to send at least one person. How great would it be if the Northern Piedmont District had the most members there! God bless you All for you continued work for His kingdom. May this coming Christmas holiday bless you and your families by seeing and being Jesus in ways you have never thought. Quarterly News FOURTH QUARTER 2017 The Treasurer s Cents... Greetings UMW members! It doesn t seem possible that 2017 is quickly coming to a close and our 4th UMW quarter has ended. I really appreciate those who attended our Officers Training class at Madison United Methodist Church on November 5, but we missed so many of you! Hopefully next year we will have more treasurers involved in our training. There is always something to learn! Thanks to all our local Unit Treasurers who mailed their fourth quarter remittances in time for them to be included in this year s giving. Those that were mailed after December 1st, however, will be applied to your 2018 giving. Our total amount sent to Conference Treasurer for this year was $120,541.27. Of this amount, $103,437.09 was Undesignated Mission Giving. I do appreciate your hard work in supporting the to help women, children, and youth around the world. I certainly look forward to working with each of you next year. Please don t ever hesitate to contact me by phone or e-mail if you have any questions or concerns. I will try my best to assist you in any way I can. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family, church, and local UMW unit! Margaret Hepler Northern Piedmont District UMW Treasurer My UMW Experience Have you ever heard the term Ladies Aide applied to the work done by the women of your church? If so, you may be familiar with what came to be known as! In my earliest recollections, the purpose for Ladies Aide was to provide for the needs of the Pastoral Family assigned to the Church by the Annual Conference. When education became available relating to the work of Isabella Thoburn, an educator, and Dr. Clara Swain, a Doctor, both sent to India for working with Women, the work of became a priority in our Ladies Aide Church Group. Under the leadership of two very capable women, our unit of took on the task of being educated about the work of UMW and how we could best foster and contribute to that work in our Church. We had representation at all District and Conference functions that we felt would be helpful in making our Unit strong, and we put into practice whatever we learned from these educational opportunities. We went through all of the Conference relationships including the name changes of the Women s Society of Christian Service. We were there in 2012 when the United Methodist Church General Conference voted to make s national policymaking body autonomous. The transition began with the leadership of Harriet Jane Olson. Today it is your History! Make It Happen!!! Patricia Wiseman Northern Piedmont District *Patricia was not able to join us at the Annual Celebration, so she sent her UMW Story to share in the newsletter. Thanks, Patricia! WE WANT TO PERSONALLY INVITE YOU TO JOIN US AT THE UNITED METHODIST WOMEN ASSEMBLY IN COLUMBUS, OHIO. is celebrating its150th anniversary of women putting their faith into action by donating their money and time to help women, children and youth nationand worldwide. The Power of Bold will be the Assembly theme. Throughout this inspirational and educational weekend, participants will revisit the journey of Mary, who boldly risked safety and security to answer yes to God s call to service. The 2018 Assembly is particularly momentous in that it marks both the official celebration of the organization s 150th anniversary and a return to the location of the first Assembly in 1942. St. Louis was the original site for that first Assembly, but the women moved their meeting to Columbus because St. Louis would not allow white women and black women to congregate in the same space. They boldly united and switched to a location where ALL women could meet, worship and stay together. Past keynote speakers at Assembly have included former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, PBS NewsHour host Judy Woodruff, Worldwide YWCA General Secretary Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, Grammy-award winner CeCe Winans and more. When women unite, bold and courageous actions happen. In 1869, eight women came together to send a woman doctor and woman teacher to India and formed the Woman s Foreign Missionary Society. One hundred and fifty years later, that society is the largest faith-based women s mission organization in the world. has, is and will be a unique movement for transformation in our church and our world. Assembly 2018 is a time for fellowship and opportunity to empower faithful women to be stronger discipleship leaders in their communities. Through moving worship services, inspiring speakers, immersion experience exhibits and riveting workshops and town hallstyle meetings, you will leave Assembly with the knowledge, courage and determination to change the world as part of this daring and compassionate 150-year-old movement. I know you are a BOLD woman and that you will want to attend this life-changing event. Please join us in May 2018. Sincerely, Your Northern Piedmont District UMW Of ffififiificers
