The Sundial -2- March 2016 From the President About 20 years ago, the pastor of my church gave me a book called Fresh Bread by Joyce Rupp. The How To Use This Book introduction states that it should be used regularly throughout the year. I have found that over the years, I have pulled the book off the shelf to reread the chapters as well as to read the suggested Bible selections and do the exercises at the end of the chapters. One of the chapters is titled The Little Easters. As we approach Easter I thought it would be good to share some of the thoughts presented in this book. Easter is more than a feeling moment. It is a faith moment. It is a time when we bring our whole self to join with others in celebrating a significant fact of our belief, and in so doing we can sometimes catch the spirit of joy from their hearts. At other times, we can enter into their spirit of celebration simply by being bonded, being present with them, knowing with satisfaction that we are at home with Easter s spirit because of the joy in their hearts. So, I would invite you to stretch your imagination and look at other ways to match the feast s message of recognizing all the little Easters of your life. Perhaps during the spring time, you watched tiny seeds of marigolds pop out as their green shoots break through the soil. Maybe you got a letter from a friend who wrote Hello, I ve missed you. How about a youngster struggling to say snickelfritz or even spaghetti. How about in the winter months watching all the birds flock to a bird feeder as snow floats gently down. Or perhaps you saw a young child who found a puddle for the first time and merrily stomps back and forth through it. Are these insignificant little things? I think not. These little moments can leave us filled with joy, surprise, amazement, and hope. Don t let yourself get lost or clouded by the tough stuff and the daily dying s. You might not always be on the mountain top when you celebrate Easter. The sheltered valley is often the location of the small things that provide the quiet reassurances that God keeps raising the dead parts of your sprit to life. God will always call, like Jesus called the name of his friend Mary in the garden. You too can hear the risen one call your name in the garden of your life if only you listen and watch. I challenge you to keep a piece of paper handy and let your heart be surprised and amazed by the things in life that awakens joy, love, growth, mystery, beauty, friendships, etc. These little events are opportunities to re-enter Easter. ~ Shirley London, CWU President
