Bear Facts The Weekly Newsletter of Bethany Lutheran School Long Beach, CA www.bethanylutheran.org Communication+Responsibility+Organization+Service+Sharing Today marks the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation, the day Martin Luther nailed the 95 theses to the Castle Church door in Wittenberg, setting off a firestorm of change in the church and the world. Martin Luther, along with other reformers, helped point the church back to the truth of the Gospel found in SCRIPTURE alone: that we are saved by FAITH alone, by GRACE alone, because of CHRIST alone. Luther believed in the importance of Christian education for both boys AND girls: I would advise no one to send his child where the Holy Scriptures are not supreme. Every institution that does not unceasingly pursue the study of God s word becomes corrupt. I greatly fear that the universities, unless they teach the Holy Scriptures diligently and impress them on the young students, are wide gates to hell. -Martin Luther Bethany Lutheran School is an echo of that reformation work begun 500 years ago! Your kids have been hearing about Martin Luther this month and will probably hear more today, but we pray that they ALSO absorb the message that the Reformation WAS and IS still all about Jesus! Soli Deo Gloria, to God ALONE be glory! Dr. Fink Do you LOVE our theme t-shirts? Would you like one of your own? We also have sweatshirts available! Each one is an opportunity for the Gospel. In the hands of local churches, they are tools for evangelism, discipleship, and multiplication. Many shoebox recipients also enroll in a 12-lesson follow-up discipleship program, The Greatest Journey, where they learn to follow Christ and share Him with others. You can be a part of this worldwide effort to grow the kingdom of God even in places where the Gospel has never been heard. Shoeboxes will come home this week. If you d like to participate, pack the shoebox with small toys, hygiene items and school supplies for a child between 2 and 14 and share the love of Jesus. Please include a personal note or a photo which often becomes a child's favorite item in the shoebox. NEW THIS YEAR: NO TOOTHPASTE OR CANDY (toothbrushes are o.k.) A great way to earn more for your tuition/tech fee rebate is to ask your employer to purchase Scrip/gift cards. We gladly accept a company check when you place the order for your employer and you get the rebate credit! If your company purchases gift cards for employee gifts, at Christmas or any other time, ask if the gift cards could be purchased through Bethany Scrip. Restaurant gift cards are always welcome as employee gifts, we have many popular restaurants on our order form. Some employers give grocery gift cards at Thanksgiving or Christmas instead of a turkey or ham. We can order large quantities of gift cards for most of the grocery stores in our area. If your employer prefers to give bank cards for incentives, awards or holiday gifts, we have $50 and $100 Visa gift cards. While supplies last our Scrip vendor has special small denomination gift cards available. These cards are perfect as employee gifts, stocking stuffers, or a small gift for all those special people you would like to remember. A few of the cards available are $10 Amazon.com, $5 Barnes & Noble, $10 Outback, $5 Panera Bread, $5 Starbucks, $10 Red Lobster and $10 Target.
