Monday, June 29: Farewell Party for the Sisters Moving to the Scholastica House The newly constructed elderly sisters home is called the Scholastica House. In June 5 th the 15 sisters were announced to move into the Scholastica House from June 15 th to 30 th. They were: From To Scholastica House (Name of Sister) Priory House Sr. Ottilia Park, Sr. Melania Kim, Sr. Amatha Kim, Sr. Regina Pyo Sr. Angela Kim, Sr. Calista Park, Sr. Eligia Lee, Sr. Canisia Lee Daegu Fatima Sr. Celina Oh, Sr. Simona Chang, Sr. Placida Lee, Sr. Inviolata Kim Changwon Fatima Sr. Raphaela Kim, Sr. Donmina Choi Yeonhwari RC Sr. Maria Paul Sung At the Priory House the groups of 4 and 5 final professed sisters were assigned to help the moving sisters to pack and move the belongings to the Scholastica House within June 24 th and June 29 th ; and clean the rooms after they were moved in. After dinner on the evening of 29 th all the sisters of Scholastica House were invited to the farewell party. The party was prepared with skit, singing, dancing, and thanking the elder sisters for their good exemplary deeds, especially their inspiring everyday adoration and prayer in the chapel. After the farewell party, we sang the prayer of blessing for each other. The Scholastica House is going to start the Eucharistic Mass in July 1 st, a priest coming from Waegwon Benedictine Monastery every day. We wish and pray for newly formed community to be happy and full of life and spirit; and the culture of elderly sisters is to be settled and rooted beautifully at Daegu Priory! 2
Farewell Party! Sunday, June 28: Farewell of Sr. Raphaela Liu from Yunnan, China Sr. Raphaela Liu from Yunnan, China arrived at Daegu Priory a year ago. Now we have to say goodbye to her. After dinner in the dining hall Sr. Raphaela Liu gave brief farewell address to the community. She said she was deeply moved by the sisters of Daegu Priory for the love and help she has received last one year. She also mentioned that all the sisters were her teachers. Sr. Raphaela thanked especially to the Prioress Sr. Lumen Choi and Sub-prioress Sr. Christina Moon for giving her the occasion of 30-day retreat. She said it was a great present to her during which she had experienced the presence of God and God deeply had stroked her soul. To express her thanks to Daegu community she sang the following Chinese song: Your one word made I to see, Your wordless smile gave me strength. When you looked at me, I found my way, I felt you are my sister, yearlong friend. You became also my model, I will never forget you and remember you forever! 3
Saturday, June 6: Installation of Superior of the Cheongju Seongshin Local House Sr. Rita Yeo was installed to the superior of the Cheongju Seongshin Local House at 11:30 AM. She is also the superintendent of the Cheongju Seongshin Rehabilitation School. Monday, June 8: To Celebrate the Year of Consecrated Life As to celebrate the Year of Consecrated Life, the community planned to read the Church Documents every Monday. On the 8 th of June each group read the book of Consecrated Life Sections 29-40 and shared their readings. Friday, June 12: Graduation of the Catholic Theological Institute Sr. Marie Martha Go was graduated the Catholic Theological Institute in June 12 th. The Institute started summer vacation which will be lasted at the end of August. Friday, June 12: The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was celebrated with gratitude for His guidance and love for our congregation and Daegu Priory! Since we dedicated our congregation to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and since we are celebrating the 130 th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Congregation, it was more meaningful to celebrate the Feast! After the morning Eucharistic Mass the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament was held; and until 12 noon the Eucharistic Adoration was done by the groups of sisters. At 12 noon each sister held a lighted candle and prayed the Prayer of Dedication to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. O, Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, You to Whom we owe everything, please bless our congregation and work. Heart of Jesus, King and Center of all hearts, have mercy on us. Saturday, June 13: Novena for the Reconciliation and Unification of Korea The novena for the reconciliation and unification of Korea was started in June 13 th. At the same time all the Catholics were asked to pray Lord s Prayer Our Father and Hail Mary every night at 9 PM starting in June 1 st and until December 31 st for the intention of the Reconciliation and Unification of Korea. 4
Tuesday, June 30: Closing Mass for the 30-Day Retreat The closing Mass for the 30-day retreat was held at 6 AM at the Priory House. The retreat was the part of the ongoing formation program and the theme of the retreat was Endless Prayer. The 15 sisters in the 30-day long retreat were helped to center on what is truly important in the religious life. Thursday, June 11: Visit of Reverend Father Joseph Hyeonseop Kim Reverend Father Joseph Hyeonseop Kim of Archdiocese of Daegu visited and offered his first Mass at the Priory chapel. During his sermon he shared how much he was and is loved by God and people. He was ordained in the Diocese of Cleveland, Ohio, USA in May 16 th. He was visiting his family and Archdiocese of Daegu during his vacation. He will return to Cleveland for 2 years of service in the Diocese of Cleveland. Thursday-Friday, June 25-26: Visit of Sr. Maria Go and Sr. Lusina Ng eny from Nairobi Sr. Maria Go who is in the Nairobi mission was having home leave visited Daegu Priory with Directress of Postulants of Nairobi Priory, Sr. Lusina Ng eny who attended the International Formation Directresses Meeting in Tagaytay, Philippines. On the way back to Nairobi Sr. Lusina stopped to visit Korean Benedictines: Seoul Priory, Joseph Monastery, Waegwan Monastery, and Daegu Priory. We were happy to have her with us short period of time. 5
Tuesday-Thursday, June 30-July 2: Visit of Justine Oh Seminarian of LA Diocese The seminarian Justine Oh from LA diocese visited the Priory House after 3 weeks of mission experience in the Chungbuk Rehabilitation Center, Korea. He had good time with Sr. Pachomia Kim who is having an ongoing formation program after 20 years of mission in LA. Comings & Goings Tuesday, June 2 Monday, June 22 Monday, June 29 Sr. Rosaria Yoon who is studying in Rome departed after funeral service of her dear mother. The General Councilor Sr. Caridad Choi, Directress of the Novices Sr. Virginia Lee and Directress of the Junior Sisters Sr. Zeno Sagong returned from the Formation Directresses Meeting in Tagaytay, Philippines. Sr. Raphaela Liu from the Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing Nazareth Community of Yunnan, China departed after one year of religious ongoing formation program at Daegu Priory House. Monday, June 8: Last Volunteer Service of Postulants in the Ilshim Rehabilitation Center Every month in last 5 years our postulants visited the Ilshim Rehabilitation Center to give volunteer service. However, in June 8 th was the last visit to give service to the residents of the center. Postulants prepared a little program: musical ensemble, dancing, and singing to entertain the residents. They enjoyed the program as well as prepared delicious snacks. Goodbye to the residents was not easy, but the postulants promised themselves to meet them again in prayer. Monday-Sunday, June 15-28: Co-Vacation of Postulants The Directress of the Postulants Sr. Catherine Hyun and 8 postulants including 2 postulants who were in the mission experience in local houses went for 5-day vacation to Busan Vacation House. After co-vacation 2 postulants of group A went for home leave until 28 th of June. They all returned with relaxed and happy mood. 6
Tuesday, June 30: Visit of Candidates and Postulants of Waegwan Benedictine Monastery they joined the rosary and noon prayer at the priory house chapel and had lunch in the novitiate dining hall. After lunch they sang a song in gratitude and in return postulants responded with a beautiful melody. The candidates and postulants and their Director of Waegwan Benedictine Monastery visited the Priory House to meet our postulants. They were guided by our postulants to look around the priory garden, farm, Fatima Home, Haesung Kindergarten, and Benedict Education Center. The directress of each institute gave orientation to them. At noon Friday-Sunday, June 5-7: Vocation Discernment Retreat The first half of the year 2015 vocation discernment retreat was held at the vocation ministry center with the theme What are you searching? As seen in the pictures, the six participants were sincerely discerned their vocation. 7
Wednesday, June 10: The 4 th Patient Safety and Infection Management Day On the occasion of the 4 th Patient Safety and Infection Management Day, the hospital prepared the CPR = cardiopulmonary resuscitation event for competition. The 7 joint doctor and nurse groups and health and administrative officers groups were competed each other. The purpose of CPR competition was get to know properly the lifesaving technique useful and helpful to anyone and any time in emergencies, including heart attack or near drowning, in which someone s breathing or heartbeat has stopped. June: Coping with MERS The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Corona Virus (MERS- CoV) was out broke in the country. To relieve and assure the troubled minds of patients and visitors, the hospital have issued guidelines, advising doctors, nurses, all the employees, patients, and visitors to wear face masks. The hospital also had set up temperature screening booths at the entrances of hospital and advised frequent hand washing with soap and water or detergent and use of hand sanitation cream. Tuesday-Saturday, June 2-6: Oversea Volunteer Medical Service in Vietnam The oversea volunteer medical service team was sent to the self-governing Dong Nai, Vietnam that established a sister-hood relationship with the province of Gyeongsangsamdo. The team was composed with three doctors specialized in cardiology, surgery, orthopedics; and Sr. Mose Park, radiology technologist and Sr. Gregory Chang, nurse, and paramedical employees. 8
On the first day the team gave treatment to 197 general elders as well as seriously handicapped elders in the Welfare Center. On the second and third days the team set up the care center in the Council of People s Commission and gave care to 633 residences of the region that had no medical services. The team presented some gifts of vermicides, nutrition medicine, face washing articles, and set of towels. Friday, June 12: Designated MERS Safe Hospital Changwon Fatima Hospital was designated the 1 st MERS Safe Hospital in the province of Gyeongnam area by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in June 12 th. The hospital was operating by performing and observing 7 regulations starting in June 15 th. The hospital installed the MERS care center outside of the hospital for respiratory problem patients to separate from the rest of the patients; and advised the visitors to reduce their visits. All the names of outpatients and visitors were written in the visitors book to check in-case someone was infected. Outpatients and visitors were given the hand sanitation cream, and all the elevators were cleaned and disinfected every hour by the sisters. The whole employees concentrated their energy upon to cut off the MERS infection. Sunday, June 28: The Assembly of Oblate Groups 1 and 2 The Oblate Groups 1 and 2 were assembled at 1:30 PM at the auditorium of Priory House. Sr. Agatha Kim, the directress of oblates gave lecture on Psalm 137 By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion. Sr. Agatha said Do It Now and don t regret as the Israelis.
