Peter Faber 16 th Century Interesting Facts: Helped start the Jesuits with St. Ignatius (one of the 6 men to start the society) Before had been a shepherd in the mountains. Had a gentle spirit and a tendency to be very hard on himself. Become a master at the Spiritual Exercises Contributions: Extremely gentle with others, a gifted pastor. Worked for the renewal of the Church a person at a time. Helped people learn the Spiritual Exercises. Princes and priests would all come to him for instruction and guidance.

Aloysius Gonzaga 16 th Century Interesting Facts: Left his powerful Italian noble family to become a Jesuit. At a very early age, given adult responsibilities. A lot of pressure from his family. Two of his brothers died because of the political corruption his family was involved in. Suffered from a kidney disease, and in the process of recovery spent time in spiritual reading and prayer. Died while he was still very young, taking care of others. Contributions: Strong in private devotions and contemplating on his own. Perseverance even in poor heath and even though his family didn t support him. Took care of the sick, especially those suffering from the Plague.

Francis Xavier 16 th Century Interesting Facts: Came from a wealthy, noble family. Ambitious, proud man who wanted to accomplish great deeds in the world. Ignatius patiently encouraged Francis to look at his life differently. What profits a man, Ignatius asked Francis, if he gains the whole world and loses his soul? They became best friends. Helped start the Jesuits with St. Ignatius (one of the 6 men to start the society). Contributions: Ignatius chose Xavier to do mission work in India, Japan, and China. Xavier s great ambition was to bring the world to Jesus Christ. Preached the Gospel to the poor and sick, spending most of the time listening and ministering to their needs. His only attention to his personal needs was to have a pair of boots and his book of meditations with him.

Peter Canisius 16 th Century Interesting Facts: Known as the apostle of Germany. Lead the Catholic Reformation in Austria. Loved writing! Had a lot of ENERGY! Contributions: Preached and taught in churches and Universities. Created peace between Catholics and Protestants, during the time they were fighting. Wrote books that were translated into 15 different languages a HUGE deal at the time! Reached out to the sick, people suffering from the Plague.

John Francis Regis 16 th Century Interesting Facts: Born into a family of moderate wealth. So impressed by his Jesuit teachers that he wished to become a Jesuit himself. Despite his challenging academic schedule (he had a LOT of homework) he would spend many hours in the chapel. Contributions: Missionary work (especially in France/Europe). Inspired people with his poetic words and reflections. Organized social services, especially for prisoners, the sick and poor. Took care of women kept them safe, off the streets, and away from prostitution by giving them jobs as lace-makers.

Isaac Jogues 17 th Century Interesting Facts: Inspired to become a missionary after reading a book about Jesuit missionaries in Ethiopia and the Indies. Went to Canada to serve the native people there. A lot of conflict there at the time, he was eventually captured, tortured and martyred by the Mohawk tribe (they considered him a sorcerer and blamed him for disease and famine). Contributions: Missionary work Choose to work with people and love people even when other people told him not to; saw good in all people even those who persecuted him.

Jean de Brebeuf 17 th Century Interesting Facts: A brilliant student, spoke many languages Considered handsome and a good leader Struggled with Tuberculosis (physical disease) Contributions: Missionary work in Canada(at first he had little success, but he embraced different cultures, lifestyles, experiences, and people and this is what made him such a great leader) He lived with those he served Martyred for his faith and service

Robert Bellarmine 17 th Century Interesting Facts: Born to a poor Italian family His father wanted him to be a politician and help provide for the family, his mother wanted him to enter the Society of Jesus (His mom won). Contributions: Became a Doctor of the Church (means he is one of the most influential people to guide The Catholic Church). Although one of the most powerful people in the Catholic church, he gave most of his money to the poor. Once he gave the tapestries (curtains) from his bedroom To the poor, saying that the walls wouldn t catch cold.

John Carroll 18 th Century Interesting Facts: Archbishop of Baltimore (means he s the Main Catholic leader for that area). 4 th of 7 children; lived with his mom. Benjamin Franklin recommended he be the first Bishop of the United States. Contributions: During this time, Catholics weren t allowed to worship publicly, so a chapel was built for him at home so he could Celebrate Mass for local Catholics. Traveled and worked with Benjamin Franklin to be a voice for Catholics in the United States but also around the world.

Gerard Manley Hopkins 19 th Century Interesting Facts: A 19 th Century poet His poetry exists today only because his friends published it after his death. Studying at Oxford Converted from being a Protestant to Being Catholic, then joined the Jesuits. Contributions: His poetry helps draw people closer to God. Many people think his poetry is playful. He can jump from Image to image, showing the uniqueness of each thing and how God is manifest (present) everywhere!

Pedro Arrupe 20 th Century Interesting Facts: Born in Spain Went to medical school and became a Doctor, then became a Jesuit. Worked in Japan and healed people after the Bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Arrested and imprisoned in Japan because they were afraid he was a spy. Contributions: Ministered to the wounded Discovered the heart of the poor came up with the phrase men and women with and for others. Became the Superior General of all the Jesuits (means he was in charge of all of them just like Ignatius used to be). Believed in justice and that the goal of Jesuit education should be to serve.

Avery Dulles 20 th Century Interesting Facts: Went to Harvard to study. Was in the Navy and became a lieutenant; also a Professor. A member of the Theological Society of America. Known as The American Jesuit Contributions: Helped people view the Church as a community of disciples. Very good at seeing multiple sides of things, especially in politics, religion, etc. He helped people listen to each other and communicate effectively about their opinions.

Karl Rahner 20 th Century Interesting Facts: One of the most important Theologians of the 20 th cent. Son of local college professor. Joined the Jesuits because his older brother Hugo did as well. The Spiritual Exercises had a lasting influence on his spiritual and intellectual development. Contributions: Helped develop theology within Catholic church Very good a philosophy and made a lot of smart contributions in that area of study. Very good teacher, public speaker, writer and pastor.

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin 20 th Century Interesting Facts: A Jesuit paleontologist. LOVED science! His writing faced a lot of rejection at first from Catholic authorities but eventually was able to overcome that and make a difference anyway. Contributions: Explored the early origins of the human Race, and took adventurous travels of discovery to the backlands of China (found the Peking man - First human cranium found) Studied and wrote about the intimate relationship between natural sciences/the material world and the spiritual world/faith. He loved both and believed that all matter (atoms, protons, etc.) is connected to the sacred.everything in the world is infused with Divine presence.

Rupert Mayer 20 th Century Interesting Facts: Born in Germany Family involved in business Played the violin, road horses Arrested and sent to a Concentration Camp for Standing up to the Nazis. Contributions: Said Mass at local Train stations for people who worked on Sundays and couldn t go directly to church. One of the first to stand up to Nazis and Recognize what they were doing, that it was strongly Against what Christians believed.
