Flea market time is here once again. Each season I ask myself can it really be that time again and once I see all of those items displayed I wonder where did all this come from? What this tells me is that people are finally giving things over to God to do with as He will. In her book, Come with Me, Suzanne Eller writes that giving means that we stop hoarding. She states that estate sales are fun but show that one day when we are gone and all that stuff is tossed into boxes, people riffle through it to buy it for pennies on the dollar. We ll all be looking down from heaven when we finally get it. That stuff was never the real treasure after all. She goes on to say there are many reasons to hold tight to things. Yet the more we hold them loosely, the less those things define us. They re gifts that maybe bring pleasure or security, but they mean less to us than what happens when we place all that we have in His hands. When you see those tables overflowing in the Great Hall, just keep in mind that this is God s work being done. That instead of things we are gathering people, helping people and keeping them out of harm s way with our efforts to raise funds. For Church of the Saviour, a sampling of what UMW supports at this local level: Mission to COTS for Women and Children, Pastor s Discretionary Fund, Children/Youth Mission, Memorial Receptions, Reading Program Books/ library, Shut-in gifts, Schools Supplies on a yearly basis. Extra mission giving at the local level (usually from proceeds of the Spring Flea Market) has included: Breathe Respite, ELC, Hearing Devices, Eucharistic Kits and Stephens Ministry. In April, we purchased nine new, long folding tables for use by the church. All of this because we are letting go so that God s will can be done.
