We welcome, serve, and educate.

Dear Parishioners, In the Gospel reading of this Sunday, Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem, to suffer and to die on the Cross. On the way he is rejected by the people of Samaria. He meets people who express a desire to follow him, but their personal interests, though valid, prevent them from making a commitment to Christ. We too are on a journey, journey to our final destiny. Every day of our lives we have commitments to our families, work and society. We are also committed to Christ. At our baptism we put our hands to the plough, to the following of Christ or discipleship. There is always the temptation to look back. If we look back our attention will be divided. So too will our energy. But, if we keep looking forward, we will give our undivided attention to our commitments. We will be wholehearted. We will not easily be sidetracked. Those who are wholehearted find joy in the task in spite of hardships. Christ invites us to take seriously his message, Don t turn back, don t even look back. Yours Sincerely, Fr. Jose Shaji, Pastor HOPE AND FORGIVENESS There were some interesting conceptions of sin prevalent in the time of the Hebrew scriptures. There was the belief that God punished sin immediately. Those who suffered disease or misfortune were, therefore, sinners getting their due from the Almighty. Today s first reading hints at another kind of God. When David admits his sin, Nathan declares, The L on his part has forgiven your sin (2 Samuel 12:13b). Here was not a vengeful God but a merciful God. What good news that must have been to David and those who, like him, could be honest enough to admit their sinfulness! Jesus is the good news of God s mercy and forgiveness incarnate. Without Jesus, perhaps the good news would have been too good to believe, too difficult to imagine. But there he is in today s Gospel, the God-man, forgiving a sinner and declaring that she is forgiven because of her great love. MASS INTENTIONS Mon. June 27 8:00 am Albert Murray(D) Tues. Many attribute it to the early Christians lighting candles at the tombs of the martyrs in the catacombs. It was a sign of solidarity with Christians still on earth. Of course, even before Christianity light had a special significance. When Jesus told us: "I am the light of the world. No follower of Mine shall ever walk in darkness; no, he shall possess the light of life" (Jn 8:12) and "I have come to the world as its light, to keep anyone who believes in Me from remaining in the dark" (Jn 12:46), the people who lived in a time without 24 hour electricity and light understood what he was saying in a deeper way. Prayer When Lighting a Candle Blessed Lord, Accept this burning candle as a sign of my faith and love for you. Like this candle, I am ready to be used in your service without asking why and to what purpose. Even as this candle, I wish to stand in your presence to be consumed in the light and warmth of your love. Please hear my prayer and if it is your will, grant my petition, but above all, make me loyal and faithful to you in all my life s circumstances. Amen Peter s Pence Collection In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has called each of us to be a witness of charity for our suffering brothers and sisters living on the margins. He encourages us to open our eyes and see the misery of the world, the wounds of our brothers and sisters who are denied their dignity, and let us recognize that we are compelled to heed their cry for help! (Misericordiae Vultus [MV], no. 15). Through the Peter s Pence Collection, we unite with the Holy Father as he reaches out to our brothers and sisters suffering the effects of war and violence, natural disasters, and religious persecution. We stand in solidarity with Catholics all over the world to support the charitable works and outreach of the Holy See. In Pope Francis, we have a joyful witness of charity. By supporting this collection, we can experience more fully how mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the future with hope (MV, no. 10). Join Pope Francis and be a witness of charity throughout the world. Please prayerfully consider supporting the Peter s Pence Collection. Nick Case s New Vocation Nick began sharing his faith and enthusiasm at St. Anselm s in the Summer of 2013 after doing graduate studies in New York City and Berkeley. His last day last day as Director of Religious Education here at St. Anselm's will be Sunday, July 31st. He is leaving for an exceptional reason: I will be reporting to St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park on August 14th, for which I am very excited. I am also incredibly grateful to all the parents and parishioners who welcomed me into their parish family. St. Anselm's will always have a special place in my heart and I look forward to the day (very soon hopefully!) when I come back to celebrate Mass. Although this is a great loss to our particular parish, the Archdiocese is gaining a very special person to the priesthood. Join us in saying farewell and give your blessing to Nick at a celebration on Sunday, July 17th following the 10am Mass. Looking for a new Director of Religious Education and Faith Formation St. Anselm s is seeking a full-time position for the director of Religious Education and Faith Formation. A successful candidate will have a passion for evangelization as well as a good working knowledge of Church teachings and administrative skills. A master s degree in theology or related field is preferred as well as experience in parish ministry. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication and teaching skills, as well as the ability to collaborate with a variety of volunteers, parents and parish staff. This is a full time, benefited position. Salary is commensurate with experience and education. Please send cover letter and resume to Fr. Jose Shaji at fr.shaji@saintanselm.org or by mail to
