Apr 15, 2018 - Page 3 FATHER ANTHONY S FAITH FORMATION CORNER Luke 24: Sharing in a Meal and Breaking the Word The Gospel reading that the Church presents to us this third Sunday of Easter is actually the continuation of the story about the appearance of the risen Lord to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24). These are perhaps some of the most beautiful accounts of the resurrection narratives in the Gospels. Cleopas and his companion were walking aimlessly to a very insignificant town known as Emmaus. After the all terrible events that happened a few days earlier in Jerusalem, maybe they just needed to get away from all that insanity. On the way, they encountered a stranger whom they did not recognize. But when he explained to them the scriptures and broke break with them, their eyes were opened and they recognized that it was the Lord These two disciples then recounted to the other disciples what they witnessed. And as they were talking the risen Lord again appeared in their midst. But all of them were terrified. Why would the disciples be terrified? Maybe they thought they were seeing a ghost. But we also have to remember that people in antiquity viewed the gods/goddesses as vengeful beings. If indeed Jesus were the Son of God as he preached: and all these disciples abandoned him when he was crucified and now he rose from the dead! What a scary thing to think about: he would come back to inflict punishments on them! However, we know that the Lord is different from the Greek gods. He does not desire vengeance, but only peace for his disciples. Then again Jesus explained to them the scriptures after asking them for something to eat. This time they gave him not bread, but some fish. I hope we all can see the connection between this Gospel passage and the Mass we celebrate as Catholics. The Mass has two principal parts: the liturgy of the Word and the liturgy of the Eucharist. Both are equally important and are like two sides of the same coin. By sharing in a meal and by breaking open the sacred scriptures, the disciples were able to recognize the presence of the Lord in their midst We may not have the privilege of seeing the risen Lord as the disciples did, but whenever we gather together to share in the meal and to listen to the scriptures, it is then that the Lord is truly present among us. What a blessing it is to experience his presence through our participation in the Eucharist! Bill Herrera, Anton Dao Quang My, Steve & Melinda, Walker Champion, Refugio Cardenas, Catherine Mendoza, Cristo Alfaro, Flora Saragosa, Jorge Martinez, Vera Leon, Rose Browning, Victor Sanchez. Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our sufferings in your own passion and death. Hear this prayer for our sick brothers and sister whom you have redeemed. Strengthen their hope of salvation and sustain them in body and soul, for you live and reign for ever and ever. Amen. Maria Le Kim Oanh, Anna Nguyen Thi Hoi, Lucie Tran Kim Anh, Dale Trulson, Giuse Tran Van Long, Martin De Pores Pham Dang Quang, Giuse Tran Van Hoc, Phanxico Xavie Nguyen Van Phuong, Anna Vu Thi Qui, Gioan Baotixita Do Xuan Dy, Maria Nhung Tuyet Tran, Maria Lucille Linh Lu. God, our shelter and our strength, you listen in love to the cry of your people: hear the prayers we offer for our departed brothers and sisters. Cleanse them of their sins and grant them the fullness of redemption. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

BELIEVING IN JESUS CHRIST Throughout the Easter season, all three of the Sunday readings are taken from the New Testament--the Christian scriptures. Together they explore what it means to believe in Jesus as the Christ, the One who fulfilled the prophecies of the Jewish scriptures. Today's selections refer to our human weakness, yet they emphasize the forgiveness and peace that are available to those who put their faith in "Jesus Christ the righteous one" (1 John 2:2). In the Acts of the Apostles Peter invites everyone to "repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away" (Acts 3:19). The First Letter of John calls Jesus Christ "expiation for our sins" (1 John 2:2). Finally, in the Gospel Jesus greets the disciples with "Peace" and urges them to preach "repentance, for the forgiveness of sins" (Luke 24:47). Apr 15, 2018 - Page 4 St. Barbara s Parish News TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION There are many ways in which religious communities are organized. Some have a central authority in a congregation, and others have a "rule" that is shared by all the members, but are a kind of federation of independent houses. Sometimes, congregations with distinct histories and ministries decide to merge. Several years ago, one of the largest mergers on record took place. Seven independent congregations of Dominican women religious, most in the Midwest, are now one new congregation enfolding more than seven hundred members spanning thirty-six states. The oldest of the founding groups, the so-called "Kentucky Dominicans," began as a frontier community in 1822. Other communities have European roots. To get to this historic moment, the sisters spent many years in conversation, and approved the new structure by a two-thirds majority vote. This was then ratified by the Holy See. The merger allows the sisters to pool their resources in order to be more effective in ministry. They are living the Paschal Mystery, experiencing Christ's dying and rising in an inspiring way. --Rev. James Field Attention: In order to keep the Church clean and also to respect GOD, please do not bring any food and drink inside Church. If you would like a visit from a priest or one of our ministers to the sick, please let us know by contacting the sick call line 657--345-9245. Thank you.
