THIS NEWSLETTER MAY BE VIEWED AT WWW.TRWE.ORG Answers: - 1 - December 2008 From the Community Lay Director What s Your Emmaus IQ? As a new member of the Emmaus Community I made many assumptions that have been disproved during my time on the Board of Directors. So I thought it might be worthwhile to compose an Emmaus IQ test to help us understand our roles. Notice I did not say rules. 1. Only long time experienced community leaders can serve on team. 2. Sponsors and outside team attend sponsors hour and send off on Thursday of the walk 3. A fourth day talk is given by an experienced speaker. 4. Snacks for gathering are the responsibility of the host church. 5. Only members of the community who sponsor a pilgrim should attend closing. 6. Each walk must be exactly the same or we will no longer be sanctioned by the Upper Room 7. I should invite all of my friends to go on a walk and then we can form a reunion group. 8. Gathering is for community members only. 9. Candlelight is a great time to catch up with all of my friends. 10. The walk fees help to support the community throughout the year so if I cannot afford the walk fee I must decline from serving on the team. 1. False. In fact the goal is to have 1/3 new members on the team, 1/3 with some experience (2 nd or 3 rd team experience), 1/3 with more than 3 team experiences. If you have never been asked to serve and would like to please contact the Assistant Community Lay Director Gary Wakefield, or Walk Lay Directors for Spring 2009 Randy Gettens/ Sophie Parks. 2. True but all community members are invited and should consider attending to show support for the team and new pilgrims. 3. False. Anyone who has been on a walk or even some who have not can give a 4 th day talk. You can choose your own topic or speak on a specific theme for that gathering. Some times the talk is about one aspect of a persons 4 th day such as activity in Kairos or a mission trip. Others talk about the changes they have experienced throughout their 4 th days 4. False. I used to believe that there was some angel out there who knew we needed snacks. The truth is that all community members are asked to contribute. Sometimes the fellowship coordinator will call some members and ask them to bring snacks so that we are sure to have something. In other words this is Emmaus bring some snacks. 5. False. This is the time for the community to welcome its newest members. The room should be packed. I know its Sunday and you have to go to work tomorrow but if you have been there you know what a powerful event it is. Continued on page 2

IMPORTANT January Community Mark this Date on your calendar January 9, 2009 Here s hoping everyone enjoys a happy and prosperous new year. May joy abound in your homes during this festive Christmas time. As the psalmist writes in Psalm 68, verse 3:,,,let the righteous be joyful;let them exult before God; let them be jubilant with joy. As we move into 2009 go to your calendars and mark Friday, January 9 th. This is the date for our first Gathering of the new year and I hope all members of the Three Rivers Emmaus community will dedicate themselves to renewed support and attendance at these monthly gatherings. This January we begin with a community wide gathering at Ingomar United Methodist Church. Our very special guest for the evening will be United Methodist Bishop Thomas Bickerton. Bishop Bickerton, who has been active both as a pilgrim and team member in the Walk to Emmaus, will be joined by the Acts 29 praise band. Bishop Bickerton is cognizant of the Walk to Emmaus being an ecumenical movement and I am confident all who attend will be inspired toward greater works for Christ. So, mark the date and ask a friend to join you for a stimulating night of worship and fellowship. A great turnout will prove to the bishop that our walks are worthy of the support of all clergy. As always, snacks will be provided both before and after the service. Doors open at 7 pm with the service beginning at 7:30 pm in Ingomar s main sanctuary. In His service, Gary Wakefield, Community Lay Director (Incoming) Continued from Community Lay Directors page 1 6. False. There are certain prescribed guidelines we must follow but there is also room for local flavor and the Holy Spirit. You can hear a talk on the same topic many times but each one is different. I love to see outside team joyously planning table arrangements and decorations. 7. True and False. Your friends are a great place to start and of course you want to share the experience with them but first make sure they are ready. The walk is for someone who is ready to take the next step in their faith. Once they have completed the walk it is a way to form a reunion group but remember the reunion group is not limited to those who have completed the walk. 8. False. With the exception of Candlelight gathering is open. So if you have someone who thinks this is a cult ask them to gathering so that they can get a taste of the Emmaus experience. 9. True. Just keep in mind that the Worship service is a time of prayer and communion. 10. False & False. The walk fees are only to cover the expenses related to the walk. Scholarship funds are available through TRWE and the United Methodist Conference. So what is your Emmaus IQ? Next time someone asks you these questions you will have the answers. But there are always more questions so keep reading your newsletter. DeColores Bonnie Readie 2

While we prayerfully and patiently wait and see what God s plans are for the future of Chrysalis here in Pittsburgh, I wanted to share some invitations from our friends at NEOC (North East Ohio Chrysalis). NEOC has been established for some time now, and they have been a tremendous blessing to us in our Chrysalis experiences here (and there). They invite us to consider sponsoring a young person on an upcoming Flight/Journey: As we begin to think about what gift we can give those most important to us in celebration of Christ's birth, what about giving the opportunity to spend time with HIM and others who hold HIM at the center of their lives? Wouldn't a Chrysalis Flight/Journey be just the thing for a youth or young adult that you care about? Pray about who you will sponsor. Girl's Flight #35/Journey #4 at Camp Asbury February 15-17, 2009. Boy's Flight #36/Journey #5 at Camp Asbury September 5-7, 2009 Need more information? Watch the video http://www.upperroom.org/chrysalis/ Registration forms are available at http://www.gbgmumc.org/neoc/neocflight.pdf or from: Northeast Ohio Chrysalis c/o Kim Ludwig 8222 Starburst Road Mentor, OH 44060 (440) 257-8213 or ludwig442@netzero.net and to consider attending a 3-day E-day (using Three Rivers terms) to learn more about how a Chrysalis weekend happens and how God might want YOU to be involved: From January 16-18, 2009, we will sponsor a weekend of sacred spaces and workshops, of song and celebration, of time with God and time for God. A weekend of Next Steps/Fourth Day time on the tundra that is Camp Asbury in January. -Time for contemplation. Sacred spaces. A prayer path. Clergy available to consult. Time to spend with Our Lord. -Time for community development. Workshops such as: Jesus Jam (music); Mime Time - silence is golden; Alphabet Soup What s ALD, FC, LD, MD, CSD, etc.???; Talk development; Sponsorship Training; Clergy Certification - What changed, what didn't -Time for fellowship. Time to get to know other servants of Our Lord in a new way. -A Hoot will happen Saturday afternoon. It will include football, a talk and reunion time. -A Gathering will occur Saturday evening. There will be a free wheeling Fly with Christ!! --Mike Varner, NEOC liaison to the TRWE Board. 3
