A Message from the Community Lay Director: A MESSAGE FOR SPONSORS As a former Registrar, it is an incredible joy to receive and process Pilgrim applications knowing that each individual whose application is received is going to embark on a spiritual journey that has been known to change lives. And I pray a prayer of thanksgiving for the loving, generous hearts of the Sponsors who make this transformational experience possible! Your Sponsorship booklet gives you excellent advice from the selection of your Pilgrim through the information-sharing and application processes. I would just like to add a few suggestions that you might find helpful. When an individual has indicated an interest in attending a Walk to Emmaus, schedule a time when you can sit down with the informational brochure and discuss the experience. Pray with them, that they make a decision that is right for them. Suggest a second meeting after the individual has had an opportunity to review the information you have provided. Take the application to the second meeting. At the second meeting, be sure that you discuss details like the Gathering Room cloister, the sleeping and personal accommodations, the reason why watches and cell phones should be left behind (with reassurance that there is an emergency number that family members will be given), special dietary needs, etc. Also answer, candidly, any questions that the individual might have. Pray with them over the decision they have made. If you both agree that this is a spiritual journey the individual is ready and eager to make, suggest that you fill out the Pilgrim s portion of the application together. This gives you both the opportunity to address any lingering questions and to make sure that all the information is correct and complete. Please, be sure that the application is filled out using a pen and that the writing is legible! Keeping the application parts together, including the Clergy Endorsement, and in your possession can speed the process greatly. If you have access to the Walk to Emmaus video, the second meeting would be an excellent opportunity to show the video, answer questions, and fill out the application. It is important that you begin your Sponsorship process now. This gives you an opportunity to take your sponsored individual to several Gatherings, share in the anticipation and planning, and to pray about their upcoming Emmaus experience. It also gives you assurance that your Pilgrim will not be on a waiting list. As I have said, these are only suggestions and I hope some will find them helpful. The goal is for the individual you are sponsoring to have the richest spiritual experience possible giving their life in discipleship an even greater depth. Thank you for inviting the Holy Spirit to work through your Sponsorship. De Colores! Gail Brotherhood, MTWTE Community Lay Director
A gentle word of concern from a Gathering Room worker I write this because of the unnecessary stress and heartache I have seen at various Walks over the twenty years I have been a member of the Mountain Trail Walk to Emmaus. What I know is that after being a Pilgrim on a WALK and finding so much love and acceptance there; one of the first feelings one has is to offer the same experience to those that one loves and cares for. They could be family, friends, church family members, etc. My offered caution is this: take some time to think it through, to pray to be sure that he or she is ready for a Walk. Is their faith strong already? Are they ready to completely give up control for the 72 hour experience? Emmaus exists to help form future church leaders; it is not an answer to someone who is lost, unsure of their faith, or having any other personal issues. When a Pilgrim arrives at a Walk and are not really READY for the experience, the result is huge amounts of stress and unhappiness for the for the Assistant Lay Directors who will try valiantly to help the Pilgrim through the experience, for the clergy on the Walk Team, for the Lay Director, for all the other Pilgrims on the Walk, for the Walk community itself, and certainly for the Pilgrim themselves. If you do have that person who is ready to Attend a WALK, we all know what a joy and gift you are able to share, but first, please make sure you have chosen a Pilgrim with God s guidance, AND that you have done absolutely everything you can to prepare them fully to attend a WALK TO EMMAUS. De Colores, Lois DeBruno A WORD FORM OUR COMMUNITY SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR What a great Emmaus Community we have. The love shines forth at each event I attend. We are truly blessed by God and the leadership that He has provided. As our community grows, so does our diversity. Some issues have been brought to the board that I would like to address in this article. We sing a song at least four times during each walk and always during our Forth Day Gatherings. "One Bread, One Body" is the song I am referring to. In that song we sing the words, "Gentile or Jew, Servant or Free, Woman or Man no more." It is uncomfortable when we are singled out because of our differences. Some of that has happened. Let us remember those words from the song: "Gentile or Jew" (Ethnicity), "Servant or Free" (Social or physical status), "Woman or Man (Sex) no more." Let us become the One Body that Christ has called us to be. Our differences and our diversity make a wonderful spiritual stew that adds to the flavor of our community. Let us remember that we are one in Christ and that He has given his life to make us One Body. Blessings, Pastor Dave
News From The Board Revised Amendment to the Bylaws, as follows: "Mountain Trails Walk to Emmaus recognizes itself as a "Coordinating Board" as described on pages 107-107 of the Emmaus Handbook. The Board will consist of 9 members lay or clergy. The members will serve three year terms. They will be elected in classes of three allowing three ne members to be elected in each year. In January, the Board shall elect one Community Spiritual Director from the list of qualifying clergy members of the MTWE community. This Community Spiritual Director may be a current Board member or will join the Board while serving as Community Spiritual Director."
From the Community Lay Leader: This past Saturday, May 3rd, we began a new Board year in the life of MTWE. Meeting in Crescent City, CA, new and out-going members of the Board came together to celebrate a year well done and to praise the Lord for the potential the year ahead holds. I would like to thank Morganna Brissenden, Leigh Madson, Mary Van Wesep, and Pastor Dan Houghton for their contributions. Several of our out-going Board members will continue as staff. We are blessed to be able to continue to enjoy the gifts they bring to our community table. At the same time I would like to welcome Berit Larson, Kay Dye and Karen Draper who have generously agreed to join the MTWE Board and share their gifts with us in the spirit of servitude. Thank you to all who continue to serve on the MTWE Board and in staff positions and thank you to those in our Emmaus community who sponsor pilgrims, work our Walks, and come together in 4 th Day Gatherings!! Speaking of 4 th Day Gatherings it is my prayer that this year, in every community in the Mountain Trails Walk to Emmaus area, we will see the Holy Spirit working among you to achieve the goal of monthly 4 th Day Gatherings. As you may know, Gatherings are the only regular community-wide Emmaus meetings. The Emmaus community s tradition and vision, common memory, and common mind concerning the weekend can be shared and passed on in the Gatherings. Paul wrote, Be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Rom. 12:2) If you are not currently aware of a 4 th Day Gathering in your community, contact someone from the Emmaus community as they may have the information you seek. If there is no monthly 4 th Day Gathering in your area, here is your opportunity to actively carry forward the ministry of Jesus Christ. Contact Emmaus community members in your area and schedule a Gathering! If you need suggestions or guidance, contact Leigh Madson, lmc@ccountry.net, or me and we will happily help you to plan your Gathering. Blessings and De Colores!
